Dark Magus Returns

Chapter 1592: The Cost of the Light

Chapter 1592: The Cost of the Light

The masked warriors were utterly immovable. Their massive, concentrated energy allowed them to block every single attack that came their way. Even the immense giant plant that Raze’s spells had erected, a solid mass of magical wood and vine, swung towards them, only to hit the yellow-colored energy as if it were an unyielding, physical barrier. Nothing could get through.

On top of the terrifying display of defense, Raze noticed that the magical energy was starting to dwindle rapidly from the crystals he had installed. He saw this not as a defeat, but as a confirmation of his suspicions.

I knew this couldn’t be all they had, Raze thought, watching the unmoving shields. There had to have been a stronger force waiting in the wings.

He had considered supplementing the Magic Circles with his own considerable mana, keeping the attack flowing indefinitely, but that would now be a reckless waste of energy, since the masked forces could block literally anything he threw at them.

Raze readied himself, taking a decisive step back from the central pillar. The enemy mages were now descending rapidly, pouring down into the unsuspecting population of the Underside. Even as they got closer, spells were already being cast indiscriminately from their hands. It was now crystal clear to everyone below that the invaders didn’t care who they were attacking. They weren’t waiting to confirm if they were members of the Dark Guild or not; their orders were simple, brutal annihilation.

“Everyone, take out those with the masks!” Raze’s voice boomed, carrying over the growing din of the battle. “They are the ones that will give us the most trouble. If we can’t get rid of them, then this whole battle is lost anyway!”

The others, accepting his strategy, quickly moved off the large pillar and dispersed, ready to engage. For Raze, though, he knew he had a more critical task: he needed to give immediate support to the people while keeping a vigilant eye out for the eventual entry of Gizin.

Because Gizin, at the end of the day, was a Grand Magus, a Nine-Star Mage. Mages of that caliber possessed power that could easily destroy entire armies and make countries crumble into dust. If no one kept Gizin occupied and checked, his arrival could mean the instant end for Raze and the entire Underside experiment.

The bulk of the forces were the regular Cerberus Guild members who now flew through the air on their golden, glowing wings, soaring past the last vestiges of Raze’s traps. They avoided the majority of the remaining attacks with ease, and even when a few stray spells did connect, the mages simply brushed them off, knowing their bodies would quickly heal the minor wounds.

Their destination was clear: the Dark Faction’s base.

Harvey watched the apparent “angels” descending onto their land and was not pleased in the slightest.

“Those fracking bastards are glowing! That makes them the easiest targets in the world! Take them down!” Harvey screamed, immediately unleashing rays of concentrated Dark Energy toward the golden winged figures.

Just like with the masked warriors, the Cerberus mages were able to instantly put up reflective barriers to block the incoming attack, though on a much smaller scale. However, there was one critical factor aiding the enemy: the energy they were using was light energy, and light energy was naturally strong against dark energy.

Still, the sheer volume of the Dark Guild members was overwhelming. Several thick beams of Dark Energy were erupting from all over the base. Seeing this relentless barrage, the Cerberus mages decided to counter with an organized maneuver. They started to fly forward in a meticulous circular formation.

They were constantly moving, almost like a spinning wheel, and then their bodies began to intensely light up, each one contributing to a building charge.

“I’m not liking the look of this one bit,” Harvey commented, his confidence finally cracking as he saw the coordinated build-up.

A blinding blast of energy erupted from their spinning formation, slamming into the Dark Guild’s central building and sweeping across the mages trying to defend it. They continued to spin, and the light energy was condensing from each person, merging into a single, devastating giant ray of sun.

It was destroying everything in its path. The Dark Guild members who were caught in the giant, focused attack were being obliterated instantly. The raw Dark Magic being used against the focused Light Magic had no effect, and Harvey knew that even with all of his power, he wouldn’t be able to stop the attack.

The Dark Guild, unlike the organized Cerberus Guild, was not a properly cohesive unit. They couldn’t seamlessly use combination spells or execute that level of coordinated maneuver. This disorganization was the fatal downside of how broken up and individually focused their entire faction was.

“Everyone who can, we need to target them individually to bring them down!” Harvey roared, his voice thick with desperation. “Abandon the base, and do what you can to survive!”

Elsewhere in the Underside world, the mages who were entering from above had finally made it to the ground floor. Most of these mages were from various different, smaller guilds that Gizin had rallied, but there was something profoundly strange about them as well.

As one of the Underside mages used a fire attack, it landed perfectly on an enemy mage’s leg, and the skin instantly began to burn. Yet, the enemy had no reaction, showing no sign of pain or even annoyance. A second later, a counter-spell was used, and a shard of ice stabbed the same man right in the stomach. Similar, horrifying scenes were happening elsewhere. The defenders were starting to figure out the terrifying secret.

“These guys,” one of the Underside mages shouted, backing away in horror. “They’re so juiced out of their minds on supplements, they can’t even feel anything anymore!”
