Chapter 367: DESTROY THE ENEMY!!
Chapter 367: DESTROY THE ENEMY!!
“He… he is really flying, huh…?”
“I still can’t believe it even though this is the third time I saw it…”
“Is he… actually standing on air? Or is he flying?”
“Aren’t they the same thing?”
“No, I mean…”
The Velmourn Soldiers were speechless. Their minds were filled with questions. Right now, twenty-seven of them were floating in the air in tight formations, seated on the backs of flying bonds—hawks, eagles, wind serpents, and even a few wyverns.
Each rider wore a worn-out dark leather armor, their weapons strapped across their backs or held in hand. Most had bows; some carried long spears designed for aerial combat.
This was the Velmourn Flying Unit, specialized in fighting in the air. Of course, most of the Flying Unit was together with the Main Unit at the East Coast. The ones here were only the remnants, but considering the grim situation, they had to make do with what they had.
Yes, the soldiers were nervous, but… more than nervousness, their eyes reflected surprise as they glanced at the man standing on air in front of them as if it was the most natural thing to do.
In his hands, he constantly patted an adorable fox that did not look at them even once. The wind brushed through his hair, making him look even more majestic than he already was. That sight alone was enough to pull some of the female soldiers’ heartstrings, some of them subconsciously leaned towards him, wanting to get a better look at him.
Yes, they were openly ogling him without shame, making the male soldiers snort at them for being unprofessional. Soon, however, Kael raised his hand, drawing everyone’s attention.
“The enemies will be here any moment,”
He began in a steady and commanding voice.
“According to what we know, they have an air unit of more than seventy Stonefang warriors. That is more than twice our size. Fortunately, the Stonefangs aren’t considered particularly strong in the air and find it hard to balance their large bodies in the air.
Our goal is to make sure not a single one gets past us. We are the last line of air defense. If they get past us, they will be able to cross the wall and attack our soldiers on the wall or, even worse, move towards our granary or farms. It is something we absolutely cannot allow, else the losses we will face will be unrecoverable.”
The soldiers’ faces turned grim. The responsibility on their shoulders seemed too heavy, especially considering the enemy numbers.
Kael sensed their nervousness as well, but he just raised his head, looking into their eyes and—
“I will take care of the front charge.”
He declared, his words instantly attracting the soldiers’ attention.
“I will face them head-on, and your job is simple—take care of the enemies who move past me. You will engage once they’re close. Do not split too far from formation, and don’t try to act like heroes. You will work together and stay with your partners. If one goes down, two more cover him.
Is that clear?”
“B-But Si—”
The only Sergeant in the Flying Unit, Sergeant Darvin, tried to resist. Just like the other soldiers, he was doubtful. How was Dragon Rider Kael supposed to face the entire enemy unit alone?
Wasn’t it better for him to join their formation and battle together with them?
As if knowing what he was going to say, Kael interrupted,
“You people will not be able to move along with me. Joining the formation will only limit me.”
“…”
Darvin didn’t know how to answer.
“I am in charge of this defense. I will take full responsibility for what happens here. You are only required to follow what you have been told.
Now again,
Are my words clear?”
Kael questioned in a domineering tone.
“Y-Yes, Sir.”
Darvin nodded. For some reason, he couldn’t look into Kael’s eyes.
Kael nodded back. He then stared at the rest of the Flying Unit.
“Our job is simple,”
He began.
“Protect the skies.
Do not worry about the ground.
She will handle it.”
He muttered as he glanced at Lavinia, sitting on Igni’s back. The Dragon hovered just above the ground, his wings calmly flapping to keep steady. Lavinia’s purple hair danced in the wind, her eyes half-closed in deep focus.
Seven glowing magic circles rotated around her in perfect harmony—the sight surprised the mages who were observing her. Lavinia’s circles, they were far more complicated than anything they had ever seen.
They couldn’t understand any of the runes she used to create her circles. It was almost as if she was following an entirely different magic system than theirs.
Then suddenly,
Lavinia opened her eyes, and her circles shined brightly, as if answering her call.
A wave of emerald energy spread out from below Igni, crawling across the barren plains like a tide. In the blink of an eye, thick vines erupted from the earth, twisting and coiling together as if they had a mind of their own.
The vines weren’t just simple plants—they seemed alive. Each one of them moved as if they had minds of their own. They lashed and clawed at the air, spreading rapidly in all directions. In less than thirty seconds, the ground beyond the wall had turned into a forest of living vines.
Velmourn soldiers watching from the top of the wall gasped. Some dropped their weapons in shock.
“W-What is that…?”
“She covered the whole field…”
“Are those vines… alive?”
Even Sergeant Leron, still stationed near the stairs, was stunned.
“She did that alone…?”
“Is it even possible to cover such a huge area alone…?”
Another soldier questioned, unable to hide his surprise.
“S-Seven Circles… are Seven Circle Mages that strong…?”
“C-Can every Seven Circle Mage outside do something like this…?”
More and more questions were raised, and the more such questions Kael heard, the more his poker face faltered at the ridiculousness of what he was seeing.
Seven Circle Mages!?
Even Eight Circle Mages shouldn’t be able to do something like this!
Heck, he doubted even Ninth Circle Mages could pull it off!
Lavinia… the area she just covered was easily as big as more than thirty football fields! There was no way any Mage could use a widespread magic like that!
At the very least, he hadn’t heard of someone who could.
’Is the difference between her and the rest of the mages that big…?’
He blinked, recalling how Elira constantly talked about how she and Lavinia, despite both being Seventh Circle Mages, were on a completely different level.
“Hmm, that girl isn’t half bad.”
Even Cirri praised, her voice seemed amused.
“She is creative. I will give her that.”
Vitaria chuckled as well.
“Mhm.”
Cirri nodded.
It was surprising to see the two sisters who constantly tried to jump at each other agreeing on something.
“What does that mean?”
Kael questioned with a frown. He had already moved away from the soldiers so they couldn’t hear him.
“Half of that magic is fake.”
Cirri answered.
“Fake?”
Kael frowned.
“As in an illusion?”
“No, not an illusion.”
Vitaria shook her head.
“Half of those vines have next to no mana in them. They will be crushed the moment they are touched. Of course, the enemy will have no way to see through it. For them, the entire field is a deadly trap. It is quite ingenious, even if I do say so myself.”
The fox answered, her eyes shining with… pride?
“Still, even if only half of those vines are real, she shouldn’t be able to cast such wide-range magic, should she? Her mana shouldn’t be enough, or is Bloom helping her?”
Kael questioned.
“She isn’t at the level of using spirits that efficiently yet.”
Cirri shook her head.
“That is all her.”
“All her, huh…”
Kael couldn’t believe it.
“Mhm, her magic circles are different—very different from what she taught Father or what the rest of the mages I have seen use.”
“Different, huh…”
“They are far more efficient.”
Cirri nodded.
Kael stared at Lavinia in silence. The woman had closed her eyes after casting this large-scale magic. It was clear that she had exhausted her mana and was gathering it again.
Soon, she opened her eyes again. Once again, magic circles different from before appeared around her.
Then without warning, a thin layer of glistening ice formed over the stone wall. It coated every visible surface in front of the soldiers, but strangely, it didn’t feel cold. It was smooth, even slippery, making it impossible for the enemies to climb the wall using normal means.
It was an armor—yes, an armor to protect the wall the Velmourns were so worried about.
The ice armor shimmered under the sun. One of the soldiers curiously tapped it with his spear and frowned.
“It doesn’t crack…”
“It’s… like armor.”
“A defense spell…”
A senior mage, one of the few stationed on the wall, stepped closer and touched the surface, and soon, his hand began to tremble.
“This level of control…
Just how is…”
He was speechless, and so were others.
As for Lavinia, not once did she turn around to look at the result of her magic. She had absolute confidence in herself and her magic.
She just remained seated on Igni and closed her eyes again, recovering her mana for the battle to come.
From afar, she looked like a goddess who had taken control over the entire battlefield. It was a sight that made Kael smile lightly.
And soon—
RUMBLE RUMBLE RUMBLE
A distant rumble echoed across the ground.
Kael’s eyes narrowed as he turned towards the incoming enemies. Dust clouds rose from the far end of the plains, and within seconds… they could see them.
The Stonefang Army had arrived.
And Kael—
“MEN OF THE WATCH!!”
He raised his voice,
“PREPARE YOURSELVES!!
DESTROY THE ENEMY!!”
“YEAAAHHHHHH!!!!”
