Chapter 2068: Chapter 1158: Hidden Agendas (Part 2)
“End crisis meeting?”
Before Durant could speak, Diana’s starry eyes flashed, and she immediately blurted out, “President, are you saying that the leaders of my Mercenary Guild, the Alchemist Guild, and the Temple of Light, the three major neutral organizations, are gathering to discuss that mysterious prophecy?”
“More precisely, to discuss the response measures to the ’Great Catastrophe’.”
The Grey Elder nodded slightly, affirming, “Ever since deciphering the prophecy left by the first ancestors of the Human Clan after the Era of Blankness from the ancient books, we have been searching for clues regarding this issue. After all, in the century following the Era of Blankness, the three major neutral organizations had not yet come into existence, placing it squarely in the blind spot of our knowledge.”
“Through the frank exchange of information at that meeting, we finally confirmed, although unaware of the exact details, that those diviners who attempted to probe further also all fell into incurable madness. But it is certain that the ’Great Catastrophe’ will indeed occur, and it will be on a day within the next century.”
A solemn expression appeared on Grey Elder’s old face, and he said earnestly, “In other words, as of today, we are already near the ’Great Catastrophe’.”
“Although the specific details of the ’Great Catastrophe’ remain a mystery, it is certain that it will be a terrifying disaster sweeping across the entire world.”
Yonir took a deep breath, his old eyes also filled with solemnity, adding, “According to the combined information from our three major neutral organizations, all prophecies unanimously point to one thing: this mysterious disaster might even rival the unknown calamity of the Era of Blankness.”
“What?!”
Hearing this, both Diana and Durant couldn’t help but exchange glances, clearly hearing this kind of statement for the first time.
After a moment, Diana looked towards the Grey Elder, incredulously asking, “President, why have you never mentioned this before?”
“Even with the concerted efforts of the three major neutral organizations, we’ve found no solution, so what use is there in telling you juniors?”
The Grey Elder shook his head helplessly, sighing softly, “If the intensity of the ’Great Catastrophe’ is indeed comparable to the Era of Blankness, then even the more powerful long-lived races like the Elf Tribe and the Winged Race would not be spared, let alone us humans?”
“Therefore, if the Holy Lion Prince could truly lead the Human World to break through limitations, perhaps the Human World could gain a sliver of hope.”
Yonir’s old eyes radiated wise light as he took over the conversation, “This is the main reason why we have always allowed the Holy Lion Prince, and even cooperated with him without refusal.”
“I see, no wonder the Temple of Light claims that the Holy Lion Prince is the source of evil, yet we have not provided any assistance to the former.”
Durant’s resolute face was full of shock as he nodded thoughtfully.
At this moment, in his heart, Leo Ray’s position evidently rose even higher, nearly to an unshakable level.
Amidst his shock, Durant couldn’t help but wonder, “Given that the Holy Lion Prince is so important, how could the Temple of Light, which also participated in that meeting, fail to realize this and still try every means to kill him?”
“That is also a point of confusion for us.”
The Grey Elder exchanged a glance with Yonir once more before frowning and saying, “Gannon the Ninth is notoriously reclusive and enigmatic. During the meeting a century ago, he raised many puzzling viewpoints that we could not agree with.”
“Indeed, since he ascended to the papal throne, the entire Temple of Light has become increasingly mysterious and unfathomable. Yet, mysterious as it may be, the Temple of Light still carries out its corresponding duties, and we’ve found no clues.”
Yonir pondered for a moment, frowning and saying, “Perhaps he is merely eccentric and inscrutable, or perhaps he is secretly plotting something, such as the Black Abyss Brotherhood truly being his minions.”
At this point, Yonir gave Grey Elder a meaningful look. Though he said no more, the implications were clear enough.
“Hey, old guy, are you not suspecting that I’m the mastermind behind the Black Abyss Brotherhood too?”
The Grey Elder immediately understood the old Alchemist’s look, half-laughing and half-crying, “We’ve been so harmonious, I thought you fully trusted me.”
“Being cautious is never wrong. Given the Mercenary Guild’s size, supporting a Black Abyss Brotherhood would be a piece of cake. Also, you, old guy, always have some big task hanging off your lips, all shrouded in mystery. It’s hard not to let people’s minds wander.”
Yonir, with a blank expression, stared at the old mercenary president and said blandly, “Besides, I suppose you’ve been suspecting me all this time too, right?”
“In terms of mystery, your Alchemy Tower is no less than that walled-off Holy City of the past century.”
The Grey Elder’s wrinkled old eyes narrowed slightly, noncommittally saying, “After all, only our three major neutral organizations could achieve this, and since it’s not our always honorable Mercenary Guild, then naturally it must be either the Alchemist Guild or the Temple of Light.”
“Saying it nicer than singing, who knows if you’re the one crying thief while actually playing some unseen trick under the table.”
Yonir glanced at the old president, snorting lightly, “Anyway, you old guy are pretty slippery, and everyone understands that.”
Seeing this scene, Diana and Durant couldn’t help but exchange glances in disbelief.
They originally wanted to ask why, given the Holy Lion Prince’s critical importance to the Human World, the Mercenary Guild and Alchemist Guild still remained steadfast, with none willing to offer official assistance.
But now, the situation was unmistakably clear.
It turned out everyone was suspecting each other, and no one could clear themselves of suspicion, naturally opting to watch coldly, guarding against being suddenly backstabbed by the other.
In other words, at least until the true identity of the mastermind behind the Black Abyss Brotherhood was uncovered, neither the Mercenary Guild nor the Alchemist Guild would take action, choosing instead to stand by and watch.
As Diana thought of this, Grey Elder smiled faintly, saying leisurely, “Vice President, it seems you’ve already understood why I appeared here, and regarding our inaction, it naturally follows that if the Holy Lion Prince can’t even contend with the Temple of Light, then how could he bring hope to the Human World?”
“Actually, it’s to find clues about the Black Abyss Brotherhood in the battle between the Holy Lion Prince and Temple of Light, isn’t it? Regardless of who the mastermind behind the Black Abyss Brotherhood is, they surely won’t miss this perfect opportunity to strike against the Holy Lion Prince.”
Yonir glanced at the old president, speaking blandly, “You really are a cunning old guy.”
“Old guy, aren’t you as well?”
The Grey Elder glanced at the old Alchemist, full of disdain, and retorted.
Saying this, both looked at each other and couldn’t help but laugh.
On the towering mountaintop, though both wore pleased expressions, the surrounding energy waves clearly indicated that they were both at the ready for action.
Yet, only moments later, the sharp gazes of these two seasoned experts simultaneously turned towards the siege battlefield below the mountain.
Noticing this anomaly, Diana and Durant immediately followed their gaze, discovering a thin layer of swirling mist suddenly appearing out of nowhere and soon enveloping the entire battlefield.
In the blink of an eye, the mist thickened to the point where one couldn’t see their own hand in front of them.
“Is it an illusion?”
Initially surprised, Diana quickly realized.
“The Temple of Light’s Chief Cardinal Gusta is reputed to be the strongest Illusionist among the Human various countries, and it seems the Temple of Light has officially taken action.”
Grey Elder’s keen old eyes lit up as he spoke, “From the density of this Illusion Matrix, I fear even I would have difficulty escaping easily. Truly lives up to the reputation.”
After Grey Elder spoke, though Yonir remained silent, his old eyes were full of gravity.
“Doesn’t that mean the Holy Lion Prince is in great danger?”
Diana furrowed her brows, continuing to fixate on the increasingly thick fog below the mountain.
