Evolution of the Ruined Heir

Chapter 336: Come

Chapter 336: Come

Malakai still hovered in the same spot in the air, his vita shield having blocked the titanic punch.

The giant let out a powerful roar that shook the ground. It was about to throw out another punch when the wooden titan appeared behind it, massive arm exploding out.

It hit the darkness giant’s lower back, careening its body towards Malakai.

Malakai vanished, evading the massive creature. However, his eyes couldn’t help but narrow the next moment.

The titan had just reached out and grabbed the summoner’s head!

’Is it not dead?’ Malakai knew the answer to that already. One needed to destroy the vita core to truly kill a high grade darkness creature.

He was already moving before thought could form. His scythe lit up a blinding green and flashed, sending out a powerful crescent slash that easily severed the arm of the giant darkness creature.

Malakai ignored the titan and went for the arm. A wave of vita erupted from him and swallowed it whole, shredding it into bits.

The next moment his eyes tore wide.

’It’s not there.’

He shot his gaze towards the titan to see it suddenly reaching for the darkness pillar in front of it.

’It moved it.’ Malakai realized. Before he had severed its hand, it had switched the head to the other hand.

If he didn’t know it before, now he did, the summoner was alive.

The titan’s arm came forward, and it threw the summoner’s head like a missile. The head phased into the darkness pillar before Malakai could even finish pondering.

For a moment, there was nothing but silence. Even Nyx and Rhett could feel the tension that gripped the entire space.

They had seen the summoner’s head enter the darkness pillar. Was something even more evil spawning?

The answer came the next moment. The darkness pillar suddenly flared, surging with even more intensity. Then, it detonated.

Malakai watched, gripping his scythe tightly as darkness began to pour across the sky, plunging the entire city into shadow.

The only light that shone was the blinding green of Malakai and his wooden titan.

Nyx and Rhett appeared by Malakai’s side.

“Malakai!”

Malakai turned towards Nyx, offering her a smile.

She felt a bit… weird. This was Malakai, but older. Was she supposed to treat him the same way?

Malakai gave her a knowing look.

“It’s still me.”

Nyx’s eyes widened, suddenly feeling guilt. ’It doesn’t matter.’ Even if he looked older, it was still him. It was still Malakai.

“You’ve shown us quite the show tonight, kid.”

Malakai glanced over at Rhett. The captain was also smiling at him.

“’Kid’ doesn’t even sound right anymore. I hope this change is permanent. Now that you’re old enough to drink, you can become my drinking buddy.” Rhett laughed.

Malakai couldn’t help but stare at the man, baffled. They were in a dangerous crisis, to think he could still joke.

“You’re still thinking of drinking even now?”

Rhett didn’t lose his smile. “Whether I do or not wouldn’t change the outcome.” He shrugged. “I’d rather die thinking of something good than bad. You should do the same.”

Rhett felt Nyx glaring at him. “Nothing will happen to Malakai,” she said firmly.

Rhett stared at her incredulously and sighed. “Suit yourself. As for me…”

He glanced back and suddenly found who he was searching for. Laila.

“Hey.” Said Rhett.

Laila stood inside the vita dome, behind them. She struggled to stop the trembling in her limbs due to the growing chill of the night. She narrowed her eyes on Rhett, as though in rebuke.

“I love you.”

Laila’s eyes popped wide. She felt a flush run up her face. What the hell was this man doing!? And why now of all times!

“You don’t have to say anything in return.” Rhett continued, seemingly oblivious to her plight.

“I just want you to know this. I’ve always loved you, but I’ve been so much of a wreck that I thought the last thing you need is someone like me.”

Laila found her eyes moistening. Rhett continued.

“You’ve always been there for me. Always cared for me. Honestly, I don’t deserve you, you’re too good for me. But I’ve always been selfish, Lai. I don’t want to lose you. If we ever survive this, I promise I’m going to stop drinking for good and be a better person. So I hope you’ll give me a chance then.”

“Rhett…” Laila looked at the waste of a man with soft eyes. Only, it wasn’t just any waste, it was her waste.

She found tears spilling from her eyes. All eyes were focused on both of them, but she didn’t care. All she saw at that moment was Rhett. Even the chilling darkness was momentarily forgotten.

“If we survive.” She finally said. And Rhett flashed her a smile before turning away, facing the front.

At that moment, to Laila, his presence seemed to explode in proportion. She felt an oppressive aura she hadn’t felt since the time of Valerian radiate from him. Laila found herself smiling.

Despite the brief interruption, Malakai’s eyes never once left the darkness pillar.

’Something’s coming.’

He felt a chill the likes of which he had never felt before grip him. It was nothing compared to the first time he felt a grade four. Nothing compared to the darkness of the three grade fours he’d just fought.

’What is this?’

This was more than a grade four, he was sure of it.

Malakai gripped his scythe so tightly his arms turned white.

“Get ready.”

Bloodlust flooded the space.

Nyx and Rhett both erupted in a wave of pure power. The air turned heavy, a metallic scent filled the air.

And as the seconds ticked by, a presence suddenly engulfed the entire stronghold.

Malakai felt a shudder run through his body. He found himself still. No, the world had gone still.

Eyes were opened wide, bodies trembling as the darkness pillar suddenly vanished, dispersing into the atmosphere.

A pair of eyes opened up in the dark sky, its stare alone felt as though the world had slammed against them.

They plummeted from the sky, landing on the ground hard. The pair of eyes blinked, and Malakai felt its focus hit him. He struggled to remain standing.

A voice came next, sounding like a god.

“Ah, my children. You’ve done well by informing me of this. The life essence has finally been discovered. Now, we can end this war.”

Malakai felt an aura grip him. The voice echoed once more.

“Come.”
