First Immortal of the Sword

Chapter 2278 - The Celestial Polarity Great Sovereign

Chapter 2278 – The Celestial Polarity Great Sovereign

“Now we can talk.”

When the scholarly young man heard that, he finally relaxed. He smiled and gestured to a chair. “Please, have a seat.”

There was no longer any sign of displeasure in his expression whatsoever.

But that only made Feng Wuji all the more uneasy.

The scholarly young man could control his emotions at will. People like that were dangerous. Each was more terrifying than the one before!

But Su Yi obviously wasn’t worried.

He said, “I know you’d love nothing more than to kill me, or at the very least, make me disappear immediately, but… you have no choice but to endure, don’t you?”

Then, disregarding the scholarly young man’s rigid expression, Su Yi casually took a seat in the chair across from him.

He gently drew his fingertip across the sheath. “Relax. I agreed to negotiate, so I naturally won’t attack.”

The scholarly young man smiled and took a seat. “That’s for the best. All that fighting and killing would ruin the scenery. Best to avoid it altogether.”

He raised the teapot, took out a new teacup, and poured them each a cup.

But then, Su Yi said, “I don’t like to drink tea. Once we’ve settled our business, I’ll leave immediately.”

The scholarly young man tacitly understood. “A simple matter. When you leave, I’ll naturally release the Lord of Sleepless Nights and the Rahu Yao Ancestor.”

He paused, then sharply changed tacks. “They say men bond through combat, then set their enmities aside with a laugh. Meeting a wondrous figure like you was a marvelous stroke of good fortune. It’s just that I don’t know what to call you.”

The scholarly young man was suddenly amiable and well-mannered. There was no longer any trace of his earlier lofty, arrogant superiority.

On the contrary, he spoke as if he’d encountered a like-minded individual. His smiles and laughter were as mellow as a spring breeze.

Feng Wuji couldn’t help but be impressed. It’s true. None of these old-timers is easily dealt with! Looking at him now, who could imagine that he’d been so arrogant just moments prior?

“Su Yi,” said Su Yi. He was no longer in disguise, so he naturally disdained to hide his identity. Using the name Xiao Jian would actually only increase the chances of something slipping.

“Su Yi?” The scholarly young man froze, stunned, then exclaimed, “Are you perhaps that sword cultivator who mastered reincarnation?”

Su Yi glanced into the distance, where the Rahu Yao Ancestor was tied up. “Did he tell you?”

The scholarly young man smiled. “That’s right. No wonder your abilities and courage are so extraordinary. I finally understand.”

It was hard to tell what he really thought, but Su Yi couldn’t be bothered to guess. “And what about you? What should I call you?”

The scholarly young man said, “My family name is Taishu, and my given name is Gong. My Daoist title is ‘Celestial Polarity,’ so my fellow Daoists call me the Celestial Polarity Great Sovereign!”

Taishu Gong, the Celestial Polarity Great Sovereign!

It was an entirely unfamiliar name, and an extraordinarily tyrannical title.

Su Yi’s eyes flashed. “Where are you from?”

“A place you’ve never heard of, one not of the present age. They call it the Epoch of the Five Sovereigns.”

“The Epoch of the Five Sovereigns?” Su Yi pondered briefly. “Are you perhaps one of the five?”

Taishu Gong said modestly, “I wouldn’t dare to feign modesty before you. I am fortunate to stand amongst the Five Sovereigns despite my meagre abilities, and I reign over a humble territory.”

Off in the distance, Feng Wuji gasped.

The whole epoch was named after its Five Sovereigns, and Taishu Gong was one of the five!

There was no doubt about it. This seemingly youthful, scholarly figure was one of the ruling figures of his epoch of origin!

He was far beyond any “ordinary” Nine Tribulation Master God.

In the present-day God Domain, only a handful of transcendent existences like Di E, Gu Huaxian, and Jiao Mu could compare!

The thought that Su Yi had just dumped wine on Taishu Gong’s head and slapped him in the cheek made Feng Wuji sink into silence.

He couldn’t even find words to express his astonishment!

“You’re one of the Five Sovereigns of the Epoch of the Five Sovereigns, huh? No wonder you managed to capture Ol’ Man Rahu alive near this spacetime node of yours,” Su Yi said thoughtfully.

He could roughly gauge Taishu Gong’s strength.

“Had the Fellow Daoist Rahu not attempted to refine the altar, I wouldn’t have attacked him,” sighed Taishu Gong. “As I’m sure you’ve realized, that altar is a spacetime node. It’s of the utmost importance to my people; our survival is on the line.”

Su Yi probed, “So you’re saying that if your people cannot descend into the present day when the Dark Days of Legend arrive, you’ll… be doomed?”

Taishu Gong inclined his head. “That’s right. The natural order of the past, present, and future has long since descended into chaos. When the Dark Days of Legend arrive, the only path to survival lies in the present day.

“And it’s only in the present day that I have an opportunity to step onto the River of Destiny, prove my Dao, and become Eternal!”

He suddenly looked at Su Yi. “You control the power of reincarnation. You, of all people, ought to understand that.

“The Dark Days of Legend will descend upon the world like the apocalypse. The natural order will break down completely.

“But that in turn means that a new order will appear, a struggle to establish the Dao anew!”

“The former River of Epochs used the Grand Dao of reincarnation to maintain the natural order of the past, present, and future.

“But this time… it’s hard to say how things will go.”

He looked away, then had a sip of tea before continuing. “If I’m not mistaken, although you’ve grasped the power of reincarnation, you’re far from strong enough to establish a new natural order.

“And I’m afraid the top experts of the present day won’t tolerate you re-establishing your position at the top of the God Domain, much less re-establishing the natural order. Am I right?”

Su Yi smiled and said airily, “Reincarnation once maintained the natural order of the past, present, and future before. It can naturally do so now, too.”

The scholarly Taishu Gong’s expression shifted inscrutably. “But to the best of my knowledge, when the struggle for battle begins, powers of the Grand Dao mighty enough to contend with reincarnation will appear to vie for supremacy.

“No one can say which of these powers will determine the new natural order in the end.”

Su Yi smiled. “I’m looking forward to that day.”

Taishu Gong mulled that over, then said, “To tell the truth, I’m not all that interested in re-establishing the natural order, but if you’re not opposed, I’d be interested in an alliance!”

“An alliance?” asked Su Yi. “What do you mean?”

Taishu Gong said, “When the Dark Days of Legend arrive, I’ll bring my people to the present day. I’m not out for domination; I just want to get my people firmly established in the present day and ensure their future.

“But as I’m sure you’re well aware, the Dark Days of Legend are sure to bring chaos to the world. Terrifying existences not of this era will descend into the present day.

“There’ll be too many wolves and too little meat. Even if I have no intention of vying for supremacy, I’m sure to get swept into worldly strife. It would naturally be just wonderful if I could form an alliance with an expert of your level in advance.”

His gaze was suddenly solemn. “Simply put, if we form an alliance, I can help you vie for supremacy and stave off your enemies!”

Feng Wuji’s heart churned.

This was a terrifying existence yet to truly descend into the present day, but he was already preparing for the Dark Days of Legend!

Even more unbelievably, he seemed to understand what kind of catastrophes would accompany the Dark Days of Legend even better than most people of the present age!

Thus, he was willing to set aside that earlier unpleasantness, forget the humiliation he’d suffered, and suggest an alliance with Su Yi!

In stark contrast, how many people in the God Domain really understood the Dark Days of Legend? How many had been preparing for years already, just like the Celestial Polarity Great Sovereign?

Feng Wuji was certain that only a select handful had managed it!

“And what do you hope to achieve by forging an alliance with me?” Su Yi was nowhere near so rueful, so he got straight to the point.

Taishu Gong pondered briefly, then said, “We can help each other, advance and retreat side-by-side, and work together to vie for power!”

Su Yi laughed dryly. “That sounds too fake.”

The scholarly young man froze, fell briefly silent, then said, “Would you believe me if I said I wanted to place my bets on you in advance? I’m gambling on your ability to establish a place for yourself in the Dark Days of Legend.”

“That explanation will just barely suffice,” said Su Yi.

“Then are you willing to forge an alliance with me?” Taishu Gong gazed intently at Su Yi.

“As of yet, I can’t see any sincerity whatsoever,” Su Yi said calmly. “How about we wait until the Dark Days of Legend arrive, then talk?”

Taishu Gong laughed. “That works too. It’s enough that you and I established a positive karmic tie today. We’ll naturally be able to work together more closely in the future.”

Su Yi rose, then said, “I ought to get going.”

The scholarly young man was stunned, but he didn’t try to keep Su Yi from leaving. Instead, he rose, then said, “Wait a moment, please.”

With that, he stretched out his hand and tapped the air.

Kcch!

The silver chain on the bronze pillar transformed into a beam of light and vanished from the Rahu Yao Ancestor’s body.

The Rahu Yao Ancestor tumbled to the ground. Su Yi picked him up and tossed him to Feng Wuji.

Feng Wuji instantly went mad with delight. Brother Su didn’t seize this opportunity to kill him! Does that mean that my grandfather has escaped disaster this time?

Meanwhile, Taishu Gong walked up to the altar and pressed his right hand on its surface.

Weng!

The altar rumbled and boomed, scattering a rain of spacetime light.

“Release the Lord of Sleepless Nights,” Taishu Gong said gravely.

The altar soon shook, and a swath of spacetime power surged forth and fell like rain. Moments later, a decrepit old man came into view.

This was none other than the Lord of Sleepless Nights!

However, he was comatose, just like the Rahu Yao Ancestor.

Su Yi could sense the fluctuations of his life force, so he knew the Lord of Sleepless Nights wasn’t in immediate danger.

“Consider this a token of this humble one’s sincerity.” Taishu Gong lifted the Lord of Sleepless Nights and passed him to Su Yi. “I dare not covet anything extravagant. I just hope you can sense my good intentions, Fellow Daoist.”

Su Yi carried the Lord of Sleepless Nights, then said, “In my eyes, this was merely an exchange. I wouldn’t call it ‘sincerity.’”

“Let’s go.” He beckoned to Feng Wuji, then walked off.

From beginning to end, he didn’t spare Taishu Gong so much as a second glance.

His cold indifference was readily apparent, but Taishu Gong thought nothing of it. He just clasped his fist and said, “Take care, Fellow Daoist! I’m looking forward to meeting you again!”
