Chapter 2435 - On the Brink of Conflict
Chapter 2435 – On the Brink of Conflict
Su Yi’s suggestion left both progenitors stunned. It was entirely unexpected.
But there was no denying that this proposition was quite enticing!
They could keep Su Yi from escaping, and join up with Old Man Heart Demon, increasing their odds of success.
But of course, this was on the precondition that Su Yi cooperated. Was that… really possible?
As if seeing through their reservations, Su Yi said, “We’ll arrive in the Thousand Deaths Mountains within fifteen minutes, and you’ll be watching us the entire time. What need do you have to fear things going awry?”
Huang Qi furrowed his brow. “Just what kind of trick are you playing here?”
“To tell the truth, I just want to take you all out at once,” Su Yi said openly. “It would be a crying shame if Ol’ Heart Demon managed to escape.”
He wants to defeat all three of us at once!? Progenitor Huang Qi burst into derisive laughter.
Progenitor Huan Yan, however, frowned. “Both me and Huang Qi are here. That will be more than enough to defeat you. Why risk delays that could well lead to trouble?”
“That’s right. If you’re so capable, see whether you can escape us alive first!” Progenitor Huang Qi said with cold cruelty. “If you can, you’ll naturally get the opportunity to meet Ling Mi in the Thousand Deaths Mountains. If you can’t… that’ll prove you’re just putting on airs!”
Su Yi laughed. “Very well. Let’s just fight directly, then.”
His hands opened, and a bundle of divine chaos flames rose into the air.
The Epoch Spark!
Progenitors Huan Yan and Huang Qi looked at each other. All of them knew that Su Yi could use the Epoch Spark to invite the Tribulation of the Five Witherings!
“With the Well of Ancient Chaos on our side, the Tribulation of the Five Witherings cannot threaten us,” said Progenitor Huan Yan, her eyes flashing. “And you… can no longer invite a tribulation and break through, can you?”
Su Yi nodded. “You’re right, but as I’m sure you’ve already guessed, I have other cards up my sleeves. Why not… try me?”
Progenitor Huang Qi snorted coldly. “Very well!”
He seethed with murderous intent, and he was ready and raring to go.
But then, Progenitor Huan Yan furrowed her brow and said, “Very well. We’ll accompany you to the Thousand Deaths Mountains and see what kind of game you’re playing!”
Progenitor Huang Qi was stunned, then silent. Never mind him; even Luo Yao and the others could see that Progenitor Huan Yan had misgivings. She’d changed her mind!
Su Yi put away the Epoch Spark, then said, “Let’s go, then. We don’t want to keep Ol’ Heart Demon waiting.”
With that, he led Luo Yao and the others away.
Progenitor Huang Qi’s expression darkened. He glared at Su Yi and the others as if he might attack at any moment.
But in the end, he did no such thing.
“Come on, let’s keep up,” said Progenitor Huan Yan. “Even if they try something, they’re right under our noses. They cannot escape!”
As she spoke, she followed Su Yi and the others at an unhurried pace.
“Why agree to this?” transmitted Progenitor Huang Qi. “Given your abilities and the support of the Well of Ancient Chaos, surely we could have kept them here?”
“Perhaps we could have, but I didn’t want to risk it,” Progenitor Huan Yan transmitted back. “As I’m sure you know, Ling Mi’s been keeping many of his methods secret. Not even you or I know just how many cards he has yet to put into play. Given the circumstances, we’d best be careful.”
She paused, then said, “Besides, why shouldn’t we do this? Su Yi is willing to obediently follow us to the Thousand Deaths Mountains. Isn’t that the perfect opportunity for us and Ling Mi to join forces?”
Progenitor Huang Qi probed, “Do you… perhaps not fully trust Ling Mi, as Su Yi suggested earlier?”
“This has nothing to do with trust,” said Progenitor Huan Yan. “Since Su Yi is determined to live or die with his friends, why can’t Ling Mi fight and die alongside us?”
Progenitor Huang Qi instantly fell silent.
“We’ll reach the Thousand Deaths Mountains in just fifteen minutes. There, we can end things once and for all,” said Progenitor Huan Yan calmly. “He isn’t afraid to die, and I’m not afraid either, but I don’t want to die without first finding out what methods Ling Mi has prepared.”
……
Meanwhile, Su Yi and his old friends had a transmitted conversation of their own.
“Brother Fuyou, what do we do next?” someone asked, clearly fraught with worry. “Ol’ Heart Demon is waiting for us in the Thousand Deaths Mountains. When we get there, the situation will be disadvantageous to us.”
“I wasn’t lying earlier. If we’re going to fight, I want to settle things with Ol’ Heart Demon, too,” transmitted Su Yi. “You needn’t worry. When we reach the Thousand Deaths Mountains, I have means of facing our enemies.”
The group was unwittingly stunned. They could tell that Su Yi was full of confidence.
They just couldn’t figure out the source of his confidence.
“I don’t care about all that. When the time comes, if you run into danger, I’ll be the first to step forth!” Wen Qingfeng said staunchly.
Su Yi rubbed his forehead in exasperation. “A’Yao, when the time comes, you hold him back.”
Luo Yao pursed her lips. “I’m afraid I won’t be able to hold back either. Back then, when the Dipankara Buddha and the others ambushed you, we couldn’t rush to your aid in time. We’ve had a guilty conscience ever since. This time…”
Su Yi laughed bitterly. “Enough. Can you at least agree to wait until my life is really in danger before you intervene?”
Luo Yao smiled. “Very well!”
The others smiled too.
The situation had indeed reached its most dangerous juncture. All of them knew that they’d have to settle things with their enemies once and for all upon reaching the Thousand Deaths Mountains.
But none of them were uncertain or hesitant, and they certainly wouldn’t give in to terror.
No matter how intense the winds or high the waves, they were as calm as if they were out for a casual stroll!
They weren’t afraid to die, so why fear anything else?
Shortly after, the outline of the Thousand Deaths Mountains came into view. The peaks rose and fell, stretching endlessly into the distance. A downpour of blood-red rain enveloped them year-round.
This was one of the most dangerous places in the Boundless Battlefield, a place not even Nine-Tribulation Master Gods dared venture.
A figure stood silently before the mountains. He wore simple clothing, and he looked amiable, with eyes like clear twin lakes. His whole body emanated a gentle aura as mellow and soothing as a spring breeze.
This was none other than Old Man Heart Demon!
When he saw Huang Qi and Huan Yan appear after Su Yi, his eyes narrowed, but quickly recovered their usual unflappable equanimity.
“Ling Mi, he said he’d come with us to the Thousand Deaths Mountains. We agreed,” Progenitor Huang Qi explained.
Old Man Heart Demon nodded. “I understand.”
Progenitor Huang Qi had initially assumed that Old Man Heart Demon would be angry, and he’d come prepared to explain further, but against all expectations, Old Man Heart Demon didn’t seem the least bit upset!
“I actually understand completely. I didn’t share all of my arrangements for you, leading to some misunderstandings between us. It’s to be expected,” Old Man Heart Demon said warmly. “But all shall be well so long as we achieve our goal.”
Su Yi said suddenly, “Since we’re all here, why not reveal your cards?”
Old Man Heart Demon laughed. “That will depend on whether or not you’re skilled enough to force me to do so.”
They conversed calmly, as if having a casual chat. There was no sign of hostility between them.
But Luo Yao and the others’ hearts and minds silently tensed.
It wasn’t that they lacked composure, but that the three progenitors were just too terrifying. The slightest incaution, and their hearts and souls might well be under attack!
“Just attack, then,” said Su Yi. “You’ll see what I’m really capable of then!”
Old Man Heart Demon waved dismissively. “No need to rush. It’s time to determine the ultimate victor. I’m not deliberately stalling for time, and I know that schemes are no longer useful, but…”
He fixed his clear gaze on Su Yi. “I’d like to take this opportunity to chat with you briefly.”
Su Yi said calmly, “I’ll give you a chance to chat with me after we’ve determined a victor.”
Old Man Heart Demon froze, stunned, then sighed. “It seems you aren’t immune to such things, either. You’re worried that I’ll use our conversation as an opportunity to invade your mind, aren’t you?”
Su Yi made no attempt to disguise his disdain. “Demons of the heart are hard to guard against, and you’re a progenitor among them. That said, to me, your methods aren’t even worth mentioning!”
Old Man Heart Demon laughed, then pointed to Luo Yao and the others. “But you cannot disregard them, now can you?”
“With me here, they’ll all be just fine,” said Su Yi.
He didn’t even miss a beat. It was as if he were explaining something obvious, and he seemed to have absolute confidence.
Old Man Heart Demon was stunned, and his gaze was hard to read. “You might well have the utmost confidence in yourself, but I can say with certainty that if we fight, even you… will have to pay a price.”
Su Yi’s palm opened, and a bundle of chaos flames rose into the air. “Let’s try it, then.”
Old Man heart Demon laughed. “The Tribulation of the Five Witherings is indeed terrifying, but… that’s not really your hidden card, is it? And with the Well of Ancient Chaos in the mix, the Epoch Spark will do you little good.
“At the very least, it’ll suppress the guy in the well,” said Su Yi. “And it’ll serve as a deterrent, won’t it?”
Old Man Heart Demon pondered briefly, then nodded. “Indeed.”
As they conversed, blood-red clouds silently gathered beneath the dome of heaven.
The Tribulation of the Five Witherings!
Even though they’d seen it many times before, when they saw it again, Luo Yao, her companions, and Progenitors Huang Qi and Huan Yan were instantly solemn.
A tribulation like that was enough to erase them. Who wouldn’t have been afraid?
Only Su Yi and Old Man Heart Demon disregarded it. They just stared each other down from afar, as calm as ever.
Practically simultaneously, the dusty gray Well of Ancient Chaos appeared silently out of nowhere.
A calamitous aura surged throughout heaven and earth, shaking everything on all sides. The atmosphere was instantly stifled and oppressive to the extreme.
Everyone could tell that a grand battle was on the brink of erupting!
“They say that when the heavens want a man dead, they’ll first drive him to madness, but that doesn’t apply to you,” sighed Old Man Heart Demon. “You aren’t mad, but rather, confident. Your absolute faith in yourself is bone deep. Your Dao Heart is not easily broken, and your soul is not easily invaded. Killing someone like you… really isn’t easy.
“If it weren’t absolutely necessary, I wouldn’t want you for my enemy. Alas, there’s no longer any room to negotiate. It’s you or me. One of us must die!”
With that, he flipped his palm, and a rusted, worn out Dao Sword appeared in his palm.
