Chapter 1442: 1441 is not to blame her

Bai Yiyi walked out of the kitchen, and before she could dial Gu Kai’s number, she saw him entering from the hallway.

“I was just about to call you. Have you had lunch yet?”

Bai Yiyi looked at Gu Kai approaching, a smile appearing on her face.

Tongtong saw Gu Kai and was just as excited as when she saw Bai Yiyi. Gu Kai picked her up and placed her on the sofa, took her paintbrush, and finished her drawing with a few strokes, earning Tongtong’s delighted applause.

Gu Kai laughed joyfully a couple of times before answering Bai Yiyi’s question, “I’ve already had lunch.”

“Ah Kai, I made your favorite dishes. Have a little more later,” Bai Yuqin came out of the kitchen with the dishes and placed them on the dining table, inviting Gu Kai.

Gu Kai said thank you.

In the end, he ate a few bites, mostly to keep Tongtong company. After finishing the meal, Bai Yiyi was about to get up to clean the dishes but was stopped by Bai Yuqin.

“Yiyi, you chat with Gu Kai while I wash,” Bai Yuqin said, giving Bai Yiyi a wink, hinting for her to spend more time with Gu Kai.

Bai Yiyi, feeling helpless, had to sit with Gu Kai on the living room sofa. Tongtong, who was full, was curled up in Gu Kai’s arms like a lazy pig, playing with his slender, white fingers.

Glancing towards the kitchen, Gu Kai said to Bai Yiyi, “You should bring back the previous nanny. She took care of Tongtong before, and Tongtong is familiar with her. Aunt Bai is not in good health now; don’t let her overwork.”

“Alright, I’ll call in the afternoon.”

Bai Yiyi had the same plan, but she had been at the nursing home this morning and didn’t get around to it.

Seeing her agreement, the corners of Gu Kai’s lips curved slightly, a hint of laughter flickering in his ink-black eyes, and a trace of ambiguity in his lowered voice that made Bai Yiyi’s heart race, “Are you still feeling unwell today?”

Bai Yiyi wished she could be a bit denser, not understanding his implications or seeing the ambiguous smile in his eyes.

But she understood exactly.

While originally looking into his eyes, she instinctively lowered her gaze, focusing on the hands that Tongtong was holding.

She answered stiffly, “No.”

The amusement in Gu Kai’s eyes deepened, and he suddenly leaned closer to her ear, his clear, enticing male scent accompanying his voice into her eardrums, causing a quiver in her heart.

“Regarding the question you asked last night, should I answer you now?”

“No.”

Bai Yiyi blurted out, immediately standing up.

Originally sitting on the same sofa with Gu Kai, she was startled and moved to another sofa, keeping a distance from him.

Gu Kai’s mouth twitched, “Yiyi, your face is very red.”

His words made Bai Yiyi glare at him.

“Alright, I won’t tease you anymore. Do you have anything to tell me?” Gu Kai dropped the teasing, his gaze gentle as he locked onto her.

He had come at noon not just to nurture their relationship but because Lu Zhiyan had called him.

Bai Yiyi’s watery eyes flickered, and in his seemingly gentle but actually sharp, unyielding gaze, she softly said, “Fang Zhiwei scheduled to meet me in the afternoon.”

Her voice seemed deliberately lowered so that only Gu Kai in the living room could hear, but not Bai Yuqin in the kitchen.

The kitchen door opened, and Bai Yuqin came out. Bai Yiyi immediately said, “Tongtong, go upstairs with Grandma for a nap.”

Bai Yuqin smiled and walked to the sofa, coaxing Tongtong upstairs to sleep.

In the living room, once Gu Kai and Bai Yiyi were alone, Gu Kai sat next to Bai Yiyi.

“Move back, don’t sit so close to me,” Bai Yiyi frowned, pushing him with dissatisfaction.

Gu Kai teased ambiguously, “Yiyi, didn’t you send Tongtong upstairs with her grandma because you missed me, wanting to be alone to nurture our relationship?”

“No, I have something to tell you, be serious,” Bai Yiyi defended herself. Gu Kai shrugged, unperturbed, putting an arm around her shoulder, leaning back into the sofa, “You just mentioned Fang Zhiwei arranged to meet you this afternoon?”

“Yes.”

Being held by him, as he leaned into the sofa, Bai Yiyi’s body was also pulled along by his strength. Unaccustomed to such intimacy, she struggled to sit up.

“Why did she take the initiative to meet you? Could she have run into you at the nursing home?” Gu Kai’s eyes narrowed slightly.

“Not only did she see me, but this morning, my mom also met her,” Bai Yiyi’s tone hesitated slightly when mentioning her mom.

She feared Gu Kai would be upset.

Gu Kai’s expression did change a bit.

Seeing his brows furrow, Bai Yiyi apologized, “Ah Kai, sorry, I didn’t know my mom would arrange to meet Fang Zhiwei. She might have said something that upset Fang Zhiwei. I’ve already told my mom not to meddle in these matters.”

“Aunt Bai really shouldn’t have interfered,” Gu Kai’s expression didn’t show anger, but his voice was somewhat muted.

What Bai Yuqin might have said to Fang Zhiwei wasn’t hard to guess.

Bai Yiyi listened to Gu Kai, lowering her head, “My mom is also doing this for me; don’t blame her.”

“Yiyi, I don’t blame Aunt Bai, but I’m concerned about Fang Zhiwei’s current situation. Aunt Bai’s words might have deepened her resentment towards you,” Gu Kai tried to keep his tone calm and gentle.

“Fang Zhiwei really has depression, it’s not feigned. Zhiyan investigated this morning, and I’m trying to avoid her as much as possible, letting Zhixing handle everything.”

“Are you angry?”

Bai Yiyi glanced at Gu Kai’s handsome face.

“No.”

Gu Kai met her gaze, his eyes gentle again.

“Where did Fang Zhiwei arrange to meet you in the afternoon?” He caught her hand, gently rubbing her palm, the tender touch making Bai Yiyi’s brain slow down: “At her home, she’s already brought her grandma back home.”

“Alright, you can go, but don’t provoke Fang Zhiwei. I’ll have Lu Zhiyan go to her house as well,”

Gu Kai said thoughtfully, “If Fang Zhiwei finds out, you don’t have to hide it from her.”

Bai Yiyi nodded, understanding that Gu Kai was referring to their relationship.

**

At three in the afternoon, Bai Yiyi arrived at Fang Zhiwei’s home as scheduled.

To her surprise, Gu Kai was also there.

Moreover, he had arrived before her. Entering the living room, she saw Gu Kai with Lu Zhiyan, Fang Zhiwei, and her grandmother, all seated on the living room sofa.

Gu Kai was giving Grandma Li a check-up.

Seeing her enter, Fang Zhiwei got up and greeted her blandly, “Yiyi, you’re here, come sit over here.”

Gu Kai also looked up at Bai Yiyi, not hiding his gentle smile in front of everyone, explaining warmly, “I got a call from Zhiwei, saying Grandma Li was feeling unwell, so I came to take a look. I originally wanted to call you back to pick you up, but I have to return to the hospital later, so I didn’t.”

Even though Fang Zhiwei knew about Gu Kai and Bai Yiyi’s relationship, seeing and hearing it firsthand still made her heart suddenly ache.
