Chapter 1536 Who is this evil?
“Don’t think that you can escape just by letting that woman run away!” Yu Tong said to Yu Cheng as she kicked him away from her legs. She turned around and looked at the direction in which Bai Lixia ran away but it was too late.
The woman was gone!
“Damn it!” Yu Tong cursed as she kicked the stones that were scattered on the ground. While she was filled with frustration, Yu Cheng was relieved. As long as Bai Lixia was not caught he would never admit that he did something unspeakable!
Without his confession and evidence, who would dare to blame him for acting like a hooligan?
Yu Tong also knew what Yu Cheng was thinking. Her expression turned sour as she glared at the man on the ground. She raised her foot and kicked him on the shoulders before saying, “Why can you not work hard? Why do you have to use your mind to resort to such tricks? You could have used that mind on something good but no! You just had to use it on something like this!”
“I did nothing!” Yu Cheng refused to admit that he did anything wrong. He suppressed the guilt and anger before saying, “You are accusing me unjustly!”
“Then who set the fire in the field?” Yu Tong questioned and the man immediately shook off her hand before saying, “How would I know?”
“Fine! You won’t admit the truth then we will discuss this matter with everyone in the fields!”
On the other side, the raging fire continued to burn for more than twenty minutes before it was finally put out quickly.
Yu Dong looked at the fields that were burned with an expression full of heartache. Fortunately, there were no casualties and the mammies and women who were on guard were perfectly fine or else, the consequences would have been unimaginable.
Only the fields of strawberry and blueberries were lost. Enjoy more content from My Virtual Library Empire
“It’s good that the fire was controlled before it could spread any further,” Shen Li stared at the burnt crops and sighed. “Though we lost fifty mu of strawberries and blueberries in total, if the fire had continued any longer the loss would have reached hundred or thousand mu.”
There were several reasons why the fire was stopped in time.
Firstly, Yu Dong had already prepared enough wet sand earlier which came in handy.
Secondly, the villagers were rather enthusiastic to save the fields as their livelihood was connected to them.
Lastly, it was because their fields were covered with glass sheets which made it difficult for the fire to spread at a fast pace. With the glass melting slowly, it took some time for the fire to spread.
When the flames in the fields were completely put out and only black smoke sizzled out of the remnants of the burned crops everyone calmed down.
One of the women wiped the sweat off her forehead and sighed, “Thank goodness we were able to put out the fire quickly.”
“Yes, the fire was put out quickly. But the fields were still burned, more than fifty mu of land was burned, this is terrible. When we are already in this state, something like this is simply hitting us when we are down already,” another mer said with a frown on his face.
“The loss is not small either. The strawberries and blueberries that Madam Yu grows are really expensive. They are sold for more than three taels. With fifty mu of land being burned the loss must be around 15000 taels or more.”
“Based on the estimation, they have lost more than fifty mu,” Village head Gu said with a voice filled with regret. “The entire greenhouse is also burned, I heard that it cost more than seven hundred taels to build.”
“But that is not what is important,” Aunt Wang spoke up. She turned her head to the side and looked at the burnt mess that was left behind after the fire was put down. “The important thing is how did the fire start? The entire greenhouse is filled with ice vats, how could a fire start in the first place?”
“The fire did not start inside the greenhouse,” Wu Junfen looked at the back of the small and steep mountain before saying, “The fire most likely started from the cliff. But even if the weather is too hot, there is no way that those thorny bushes could have caught fire.”
“You are right,” Village Head Gu agreed with a furrow of her brows.
“Did someone smoke and throw the ashes of the smoking pipe on the back of the cliff?” Aunt Wang questioned the villagers.
“Of course not!”
“We did not! We are illiterate but not foolish, we know that we cannot smoke close to fields.”
“It was not caused by the ashes of a smoke pipe,” Yu Dong shook her head and explained, “There is no way the ashes of a smoking pipe would ignite such a dangerous fire. Furthermore, there is no wind blowing at the moment. The fire could not have accelerated so quickly.”
“You…do you mean to say someone did this on purpose?” Aunt Wang gasped with her hands covering her mouth.
“That’s the only explanation for now,” Yu Dong sighed.
Immediately the villagers were alarmed.
“What?! How treacherous! Who did such a thing?”
“So evil! This is not just a field, many people are relying on it to earn their livelihood!”
Ye Liu with the mammies looked around the field and made sure that every amber was doused with wet sand. He was relieved to find that the ambers were all dealt with.
However, when he looked at the molten skeleton of the greenhouse, his heart ached when he thought about the loss.
This greenhouse alone cost them more than seven hundred taels.
As for the strawberries it was better to not even talk about them as they were charred to a black mess. The blueberries were in a slightly better condition but most of the trees were harmed as well.
Shen Li walked around the field with Fang Chi and estimated that they had lost more than five thousand catties of strawberries or blueberries. Though it was better than nothing, he still could not accept it.
His wife worked hard every day and this was the result.
