How to Bring Common Sense to Xianxia World

Chapter 142: Ditching

Chapter 142: Ditching

Fatty Ding Lao did not respond to Wei Chen’s encouragement. He was still down and depressed. Honestly, Wei Chen could not blame him. If the ability he believed was his own turned out to be just a buff from the place he was in, anyone would feel devastated.

Wei Chen had a soft spot for good natured chubby guys like Fatty Ding Lao. It reminded him of his old buddy from his previous life.

Back in high school, in his previous life, he had a friend who could be described as a nerdy chubby guy who loved to eat and would go on and on about games, science, and the usual nerdy topics. Hell, that guy could even speak Tolkien’s Elven tongue.

After reminiscing for a moment, Wei Chen decided to try again.

“Look, buddy…” He patted Fatty Ding Lao on the back and continued, “There is a saying that everyone has their own gift. Maybe alchemy is not your calling. But you are the only one I know who could come up with that delicious cheese pill.”

“Wasn’t that because of this place?” Fatty Ding Lao asked in a self mocking tone.

“Part of it, yes. But think about it. If it were anyone else, do you think they could come up with a cheese pill? I bet that if it were someone else, they would at best come up with an upgraded qi gathering pill, or maybe even a downgraded one that uses fewer refining materials.” He paused and patted Fatty Ding Lao on the back again.

“At least you are unique, man. Other than you, no one could come up with that thing.”

Fatty Ding Lao wanted to argue, but Wei Chen cut him off. “Maybe pill refining is not your true calling. Why don’t you try cooking? Maybe you might be surprised.”

Wei Chen gave the best advice he could come up with. Did Fatty Ding Lao have talent in cooking? Maybe. Maybe not. Who knew? He was half making it up anyway.

But what he did not know was that the words he spoke, hoping to cheer the guy up, would become the very thing that changed Fatty Ding Lao forever. They would awaken him to a new possibility.

A far brighter possibility for Fatty Ding Lao, yet a very familiar one to Wei Chen.

But…. that was a tale for another time.

Wei Chen, seeing that Fatty Ding Lao’s expression was getting better, decided to leave everything to Mo Jue and Mo Xingyao. Both of them were leaders, so they would know what needed to be done with this place.

“Where are you going?” Mo Xingyao’s voice stopped him just as he was about to step out of the courtyard.

Wei Chen looked back. “Oh… I have something I need to do.”

“What is it? Do you need any help?” Mo Xingyao asked, both curious and worried.

“Oh, there’s no need. It’s nothing much…” Wei Chen shook his head and did not go into detail. He could not exactly tell her that he needed to report his findings to the underworld, could he?

“Are you sure? Are you hiding something from me?” she asked. Then she paused, as if surprised by her own words.

Wei Chen raised his brow. Why did this girl seem a little clingy this time? Was it because of what he had said to her earlier?

Mo Jue watched the two young people interact without interrupting. In his mind, he had already guessed Wei Chen’s objective. This guy must be going out to look for those assassins.

But honestly, even if Wei Chen did not try to find the assassins from the Life Devouring Hall, they would not be able to do much. The target was this former member of the Money Gang, Ah Hu, and not Mo Xingyao, his daughter.

Even if the target were his daughter, he was confident enough to send all those assassins to their deaths no matter how many times they tried or how many they came.

Speaking of sending people to their deaths, Mo Jue looked at Ah Hu and then at Fatty Ding Lao. In order to squash whatever desire the Money Gang had for this place, he would need to have a talk with them soon.

On Mo Xingyao’s side, she let out a tired sigh. “Ha… fine. Just…” She reached out and gently adjusted Wei Chen’s collar and clothes. “Just be careful… and come back soon. I still want to eat those cheeseburgers you talked about.”

Wei Chen chuckled and ruffled her hair, causing Mo Xingyao to pout before she quickly fixed it again.

“Okay, I’ll be back soon,” Wei Chen said before activating his movement technique, the Shadowless Reaper Step, and vanishing into the night sky.

After Wei Chen left, Mo Xingyao stared at the night sky where he had disappeared, her eyes holding traces of melancholy and sorrow.

“Haa…” Mo Jue let out a sigh. He knew what Mo Xingyao was thinking. About ten years ago, she had also stared at the sky just like this. It was the night when her mother, and his wife, left them.

After that, he changed his sect’s name from ’Four Demon Valley’ to ’Sky-Severing Demon Valley’. It was as if he wanted to engrave into the world what his wife had sacrificed for their safety, and to remind himself that he would never allow her sacrifice to be in vain.

Mo Jue thought about the new sword move he had comprehended from that sword shard, his new signature technique, the True Sky-Severing Cut. If he could obtain more of those shards, then perhaps the hope he had clung to ten years ago might finally become reality.

This was one of the main reasons why he approved of Mo Xingyao’s relationship with Wei Chen.

In his mind, Wei Chen was a mystery. The man did not seem to be in a hurry, nor did he show any great ambition to ascend. He did whatever he pleased and lived a carefree life, despite clearly being in the Void Refining Realm.

Most experts in the Void Refining Realm were ambitious, or they were leaders of powerful factions. Only a rare few were eccentric, like that Drunken Immortal, Hua Zuixian.

To him, Wei Chen belonged to that category, a mysterious and eccentric expert who loved cooking and doing broadcasts.

With that in mind, he decided to make a move.

“Yaoyao, help me secure this place and plan for our Pill Refining Hall to make use of it. I’ll take half of the Sword Division to have a serious talk with the Money Gang. You!” He pointed at Ah Hu. “Come with me too.”

“Yes… yes! My lord, right away!” Ah Hu immediately agreed. This was the only way out for him.

— An Hour Later – Money Gang —

“What did you say!?” The screaming voice of Fei Wuyan, the leader of the Money Gang, reverberated throughout the hall.

In the middle of the night, while he was having a wild night with his concubines, this bastard dared to come to him, pulling him away from the embrace and gentleness of their flesh.

Then… this bastard dared to report that the assassination had failed? And more than that, those idiot assassins from the Life Devouring Hall had provoked the overlord of this city, Mo Jue?

Yes, he had fantasized many times about challenging the authority of this city and its experts. Who wouldn’t do that? But for it to become reality? This was courting death!

“Boss! The assassination has failed, and those….” The man wanted to continue but was cut off when a white porcelain plate struck his forehead, thrown straight at him.

“I know! I’m not deaf!” Fei Wuyan shouted. Then, after venting some of his anger, he gradually calmed down.

“Where is Leng Suan? Where is that bastard?” he asked, panic-stricken.

Fei Wuyan bit his nail, a habit he unconsciously had whenever he was extremely panicked or cornered.

He needed to find that bastard Leng Suan and throw all the blame onto him. He could not afford to let the wrath of the Sky-Severing Demon Valley pour down on him. Even if the Money Gang ceased to exist, he must survive.

Only by surviving could one redeem themselves from anything that happened. Only by surviving could one still have a chance at life.

Yes, he was the leader of the gang. He had courage and guts. But courage must not mix with stupidity or a suicidal tendency. Provoking the Sky-Severing Demon Valley while Mo Jue was present was both.

“Boss… I don’t know. We haven’t seen Leng Suan since the assassins went to find the target!” the man reported. Blood from his forehead dripped down into his eyes, but he did not dare wipe it away.

With that information, Fei Wuyan knew that Leng Suan must have realized beforehand that the job had gone wrong and had already ditched him, leaving him to face the consequences alone.
