Chapter 262: Pop Song
The stage lit up with vibrant colors as LUNAIRE went out to the stage. The five-member girl group was only new to the industry, but they were already making a big impact in Korea and even outside of it.
Recently, they held a sold-out dome tour across the West despite the increase in ticket prices.
When they began to sing and dance, it became apparent why they had become so popular in just a short amount of time.
The upbeat intro of their hit song ‘Berry Nice’ filled the venue, and the members went into a lively dance routine.
“You’re my berry nice, sweet, and bright,
Dancing through my dreams every night.”
– If I had known LUNAIRE was going to be there, I would have fought harder to buy some tickets.
– You wouldn’t have succeeded. As soon as Zeno was announced to be in the lineup, the tickets were sold out right away.
– Oh, to be an actor and witness this life.
– You act as if that’s something easy to do! You probably can’t achieve it even with 25 lives.
– 25 lives? That’s oddly specific.
Yuan and Risa clapped along enthusiastically while Oska nodded in appreciation. Despite being a supposedly cold person, he actually enjoyed performances like this. He glanced once at Risa and smiled at her. However, Risa was too busy looking at Zeno and trying to make him clap, too.
Even the more reserved attendees couldn’t help but tap their feet to the rhythm. Bacon PD was definitely discreetly shaking his ass to the chorus.
Zeno watched, but he was distracted by his thoughts. The cheerful melody couldn’t remove him from his internal turmoil. The song’s theme of blissful happiness felt distant to him.
It felt like getting four awards wasn’t supposed to be this easy. He looked up to the heavens once. There was a catch… there has to be.
So, when the performance reached its climax, Zeno didn’t even notice that LUNAIRE had descended from the stage and danced their way to the artists.
– Is this what I think it is?
– They’ve done this in other award shows. They let the artists sing into the microphone without any warning!
– Yes, yes! I want to see epic fails. It’s nice seeing people fumble.
Just then, the beat of Berry Nice finally ended, and a familiar tune rang in everyone’s ears. The cheers became louder, and LUNAIRE clapped their hands, enjoining everyone.
The song was none other than ‘Uncertainty,’ a song by an old pop artist named Hayun Seo. It won the grand award during the 80s and was still a staple in the pop industry in Korea.
Everyone knew the song, making the atmosphere very enjoyable. However, it was going to be even more fun with what was planned next.
“The mornings feel too gentle now
Your coffee sits beside my cup
You laugh, and I forget somehow
That I’m still bracing for the drop.”
Jeemin hopped toward a popular influencer seated at the second table. He was already on his feet before she reached him, face lit like he’d just won the lottery.
“Give it to me!” he shouted with both hands outstretched, and the audience burst into light laughter.
Jeemin handed him the mic and backed away dramatically, arms raised like she was presenting a star.
– This guy always asks for attention.
– Isn’t he the one who stirs up drama for no good reason? What was his name again?
– Zebra, I believe.
– Ah, yeah. This guy. Hate him. He’s known for spreading news the fastest no matter how incredulous they are.
He cleared his throat into the mic.
“We talk like all the time we lost
Never mattered, never hurt
And I wonder if I paid the cost.”
As soon as he sang, it seemed the audience hated him even more.
It was shrill and off-key. His note made even the sound team wince backstage, and one elderly actor subtly plugged one ear with his finger.
The audience was in stitches, and the comments exploded.
– Jeemin is regretting it immediately. Lol
– Please let the mic rest in peace.
– What if this was my thirteenth reason?
– Next cover: mouth.
Jeemin pursed her lips to prevent herself from laughing out loud. With that, she hurriedly took the mic back and skipped away.
Meanwhile, Yeri had made a beeline toward a well-respected veteran actress in her sixties—someone known for her roles in dramas about heartbreak and deep motherly sacrifice.
She stood up with gusto, adjusted her long velvet shawl, and held the mic.
She waited one beat too long. Then, with utmost conviction, she belted out.
“You smile like storms don’t reach our skies
Like loving me is safe and clear
But I’ve only known the kind of love
That turns to silence when it’s near”
It didn’t match the song, and her age was painfully obvious in the way she sang.
– Her vibrato, though.
– It feels like a drama OST for a historical romance.
– Foul. You guys are too much. She’s someone’s grandma!
– Guys, it’s much better if you place it in 2x speed… so that it ends faster.
– Another foul. This is a live stream!
The artists that the girls chose were those who definitely did not have any talent for singing.
However, they still had one last chance.
Mei glanced around the crowd. Most of the actors and guests were looking away or fake-smiling, hands glued to their laps—denying it but low-key wanting it.
But one person didn’t look like he was pretending.
He was too deep in thought; his eyes glazed like his thoughts were miles away.
She danced her way over, graceful and light, then slowed down as she reached his table. Yuan and Risa were surprised, standing in excitement that their table was chosen. Yuan, being a past idol, was even expecting it to be him!
But then, at the very last moment, Mei placed the microphone in front of Zeno, who was still too deep in thought.
There’s definitely a catch.
It echoed continuously in the back of his mind.
Then, before he knew it, as the melody rang through his ears, he began singing out loud.
