Chapter 851: An Unexpected Moment
Chapter 851: An Unexpected Moment
In a dimly lit room, a beautiful woman sprawled across a velvet sofa in a seductive pose, lazily swirling the wine in her glass. The moment she heard footsteps outside the door, her eyes narrowed and shifted toward it.
“Madam, may I come in? I have urgent news to report. Something just happened in our district!”
“You may enter,” Nyx replied in a languid tone, slowly setting her glass down on the table as she straightened her posture.
The door opened and a woman stepped inside, clad in all black. Her figure was striking — curvaceous with wide hips and a full chest. She bowed her head respectfully before looking up at Nyx with a grave expression.
Nyx arched a brow, curiosity flickering in her gaze. “Tell me, what urgent news has you looking so troubled? Is it the Red Dragon Syndicate stirring trouble in my territory again?”
“No, Madam, it’s not the Red Dragon Syndicate. This is something else entirely,” the woman answered quickly, shaking her head.
“Then speak. You should know well how valuable my time is.”
“I understand, Madam.” She nodded, inhaled deeply, and gathered her resolve.
“Madam, nine of our patrolling assassins were killed moments ago. Not only that, but word has reached us that several suspicious people have entered our domain.”
“What?!” Nyx shot to her feet, her eyes widening in shock.
Her people had been killed — and she hadn’t even sensed it? No clash of weapons, no surge of magic, not even a scream. It was as though their lives had been erased in total silence.
“There’s more, Madam.” The woman’s voice quivered, her nervousness plain. “Among those intruders, our scouts identified several familiar faces. They saw Queen Mireya, Sylvia, Vrasha, and Kitsura. The rest of their group remains unknown to us.”
“W-What are they doing here… in the Lawless City?” Nyx muttered, her expression paling as her thoughts raced. She had already heard of the calamity at Crimsonfang Peak.
’This is terrible! If they’ve come for us, then we’re finished!’ Nyx panicked inwardly, her heart thudding against her chest.
“Where are they now? Tell me quickly!” she shouted, her voice sharp with urgency, as the weight of her concern grew heavier by the second.
“They were right in front of our building when I arrived. They’re probably looking for you — we recently posted a bounty on Queen Mireya’s head,” the woman replied, her voice shaking, her body trembling as she spoke.
“What?! They’re here?! This is impossible!!” Nyx shouted, panic lacing her voice as if her life were at stake.
Her face went cold; horror washed over her as the weight of the situation sank in, leaving her frozen as though she’d seen a specter.
“Madam, what should we do? Shall I sound the alarm and order everyone to strike?” the woman asked, concern evident in her tone.
“No! Absolutely not! Don’t do anything foolish that will bring us ruin!” Nyx snapped, regaining control. “Bring them here. I’ll deal with them personally.”
’I hope they don’t tear this place to shreds in fury…’ Nyx prayed inwardly, forcing herself to breathe deeply to calm her racing heart.
“As you wish, Madam.” The woman bowed and hurried from the room, her face set but fear gnawing at her. She had heard of the Crimsonfang Peak incident and was still stunned by it.
She had trouble accepting that the Dragon Blood Tribe’s ancestor fell to Vrasha, and that Mireya humbled him without lifting a finger.
’I just hope they understand — this is a business. We do this for money; feelings don’t matter here,’ she told herself as she left.
—
“This place is nice, actually. It’s hard to believe this is the headquarters of an assassination syndicate — a group of notorious killers,” Leah mused, admiring the building’s interior and fine craftsmanship.
“Indeed. It’s nicer than some noble houses back in the Human Continent,” Emma agreed.
“The leader clearly has good taste in decor… but that won’t excuse issuing a bounty on one of my wives,” Yuan said, his expression hardening.
At that moment a figure approached, clad in black with a face masked in ebony—only his eyes visible.
“Who are you people, and what business do you have here? If you want to post a bounty, go to the counter. Otherwise, leave at once!” the masked man demanded, his tone sharp as he looked down on Yuan.
“And what does that have to do with you? Our business doesn’t concern you. Step away.” Yuan’s voice was cold; the man’s presence annoyed him.
“You bastard! Don’t you know where you’re standing?!” the assassin snarled. “Watch your mouth, or I’ll kill you without thinking twice!”
“This is our domain! No one will come to your rescue even if I skin you alive!” the assassin spat.
“Oh? Are you threatening me?” Yuan chuckled softly, which only inflamed the man further.
“You scrawny little brat! You don’t know what’s good for you, do you? Let me teach you a lesson you’ll never forget!”
The assassin lunged for his daggers, mana flaring as he poured his strength into the attack. The air turned cold; the other assassins snapped their heads toward the commotion.
“That brat’s done for! Butcher’s gonna skin him alive!”
“He’ll learn not to stand before Butcher — this’ll be entertaining!”
The surrounding assassins murmured with eager anticipation as they watched Yuan and “Butcher” face off.
“Enough of this nonsense!”
A cold voice cut through the murmurs, silencing everyone. Heads turned at once — the voice was recognized.
A woman materialized before them: beautiful and seductive, glasses perched on her nose, every inch dangerous despite the allure.
“Butcher… didn’t you hear what I said?” she asked, her eyes dead and expression icily calm.
Butcher snorted, sheathed his weapons, and stalked away, clearly displeased by the interruption.
He knew better than to cross her. She was the leader’s secretary — and the organization’s top assassin. Defy her and you didn’t merely die; you endured a slow, torturous end.
The woman turned to Yuan and his party with a polite smile. “Our madam is waiting in her office. Please follow me; I will escort you inside.”
“Sure.” Yuan inclined his head and followed, his wives close behind.
’Why would the leader of the Green Viper Organization want to meet us? We’re supposed to be enemies. This doesn’t make any sense.’ Yuan frowned inwardly, his expression serious as he followed the woman.
His wives shared the same doubts, silently questioning the situation as they walked. None of them could understand why their enemy had suddenly chosen to welcome them instead of attacking outright.
Soon, they arrived before a large office. The woman knocked gently on the door, and moments later, a melodious voice drifted from within.
“Bring them inside.”
“I understand, Madam.” The woman opened the door at once and gestured for Yuan and his wives to enter.
The group exchanged brief nods before stepping inside, their faces a mixture of confusion and caution. None of them understood what the leader’s true intentions were.
Inside, a breathtaking woman lounged elegantly on a sofa. Her beauty was matched only by the sharp, dangerous aura in her eyes, a mixture of allure and threat that demanded attention.
Yuan’s gaze lingered on her features, his surprise evident. Her eyes were slit vertically, glowing with green pupils, and even her tongue bore the unmistakable serpentine trait. They were exactly like Mireya’s.
’She’s also a snake beastman… what a coincidence. This isn’t what I expected at all,’ Yuan thought, his brows lifting in astonishment.
His wives were equally taken aback. None of them had imagined that the feared leader of the Green Viper Organization would turn out to be a member of the Snake Beastmen Tribe.
After all, snake beastmen were among the rarest of beastkin. Most of their kind had been hunted down, killed, or captured and sold as slaves for outrageously high prices.
“Welcome to my humble—” Nyx’s words caught in her throat as her eyes swept over the group. She froze, stunned not only by the breathtaking beauty of the women but also by the young man before her, whose handsome features left her momentarily speechless.
Meanwhile, Emma stared at Nyx with a puzzled look, as if something about the woman’s face stirred a distant memory she couldn’t quite place.
Yuan noticed the strange expression on Emma’s face and raised a brow, silently wondering why Emma was staring at the leader of the Green Viper Organization with such intensity.
’Does she…know her?’ he thought, confusion and curiosity rising within him.
At the same moment, Nyx’s gaze landed on Emma. Her brows furrowed in puzzlement before her eyes flew wide in shock.
“Y-You… You’re…how?!” Nyx gasped, her voice trembling as she raised a shaking finger toward Emma, disbelief etched into every line of her face.
Her expression stiffened, her heart pounding violently as countless memories surged back. Her hands trembled uncontrollably, her composure crumbling at the sight before her.
Emma blinked, tilting her head in confusion.
“Do you…know me?” she asked, her voice uncertain.
Nyx inhaled deeply, struggling to regain control over the storm of emotions threatening to overwhelm her, though her eyes still glistened with tears that only deepened Emma’s confusion.
Yuan and the others exchanged bewildered glances, utterly lost as to what was unfolding before them.
“Yes…of course I know you. How could I ever forget?” Nyx whispered softly, her lips curving into a fragile smile. “But I never thought I’d see you again… I had lost all hope of it.”
Click. Click. Click.
The sharp sound of her heels echoed as she slowly crossed the room. When she reached Emma, Nyx stretched out her arms and pulled her into a tight embrace. Tears streamed freely down her cheeks.
“It’s so good to see you again… my dear child,” Nyx whispered in Emma’s ear, her voice breaking with uncontrollable emotion.
