Chapter 1548: Chapter 1547: Another Celebration (5)

The night began to drag on by the time the third set of kegs were lugged out, and honestly the amount of merrymaking that I wanted to participate in was not as high as everyone else, so eventually I decided to just… call it a night.

Wishing Jahi well in her dancing and negotiations melded together with me wishing Leone well too since she was chatting with her Mother and some other Nobles about recipes that could do this or that…

It was nice seeing everyone being sociable and having fun, but I was getting tired and felt the urge to just… head inside and do nothing, so I went ahead and did just that, slipping back into the manor, getting out of this really nice dress and just donning a simple, comfortable and familiar robe that I loosely tied around myself.

Plopping down in front of the large fireplace and taking one of the few books that currently sought refuge on our shelves, I began to read quietly as I waited for everyone to eventually make their way inside, and I had to admit I was a little surprised to see Mom coming in first amongst everyone.

The older Demoness flopped into the chair and loosened her tie, relaxing as much as she could whilst staring at the ceiling, those ruby eyes reflecting the flames quite nicely as she just… counted the planks of wood or something.

I managed to read a few more paragraphs of this book about a merchant girl running away from home to seek love with the adventurer she had bartered with before Mom let out a sigh and stole my attention away from the book.

“You and Anput… who would have thought that it would have happened already? I was wagering a few more years at least before something came from you all being unapologetically horny, but this is nice too.”

Humming, I nodded and gently folded the corner of the page, a habit I don’t think I was ever going to break even in a new world with magic; closing the book and resting it on my lap, I looked towards her and said “I wasn’t planning on it either, but it happened.”

“Well… I think you were ’planning’ on it the same way Ria and I were planning on Jahi, or the same way Ria and I were planning on Alessandra and Lakshmi. That is, you forwent protection and just let nature take its course. Apparently nature quite likes you all and doesn’t really like us since you got pregnant so quickly.”

Shrugging and turning my gaze to the flames, I replied “Perhaps there was just a set of stress weighing on you all that made it harder..? And honestly the most surprising news from this is Leone being the one to get Anput pregnant. If it had been just me there was a fair chance of it happening, but them..?”

“Mhm… and Julie told you about the wonders of being a Caninekin woman? You’re prepared for a litter in a handful of months?”

“No, no I am not, but it isn’t like I can do anything about it besides prepare. Logically it makes sense, and logically I am also quite pleased since it means… well, having a lot of kids when we can afford it is nice. Emotionally… I am quite terrified.”

Chuckling softly and glancing at me, Mom said “That’s just how it goes though. Hard to not be scared of something like this, but at the same time… according to your Mother and Ria, anyways, this is something that you’ll ’forget’ about after it happens.” before standing up and stretching, loosening her body as she made her way to the stairs.

Right as she began to head up the Sultana came in with a clearly drunk Lady Kio on her arm, and upon seeing me the petite Dogkin woman grinned and tried to say something only to belch, causing her to blink a few times before her cheeks puffed out.

Quickening her step the Sultana dragged her away to get her somewhere ’safe’, and I sighed before glancing at the book in my lap, knowing that opening it was a losing battle as of now; too many people would be coming back for me to start again, so I just found my way to the kitchen and prepared myself a little something to keep the hunger away.

A single sandwich turned into a second one, this one being a club sandwich since I was a bit hungrier than I had thought; midway through that Lady Lorelei showed up, giving me a knowing smile as she took a seat at the counter.

“Already dealing with the bottomless appetite and you don’t even know it… Get used to this, by the way. You’ll either be completely and utterly famished or incapable of eating a single bite without feeling utterly stuffed.”

“I assume that was a problem you faced..?”

The Vampire chuckled and replied “A problem WE all face, dear. Different races yet the pregnancy for us all remains remarkedly similar. If anything I was worse because I need blood to survive, yet sometimes the sight or smell would just set me off. Not everyone is fond of being turned into a snack either, which was irritating when Fen started to smell like one.”

I just blinked a few times as I tried to process the thought of this elegant woman fiending after the big bad Wolfkin’s blood… and I couldn’t see her giving it even if the Empress ordered her to; the chat continued as the night wore on, and eventually everyone found themselves in the kitchen for one thing or another before we all went on upstairs for bed.

Another day gone by and another celebration for the people to enjoy, but tomorrow was a return to normalcy for them even if the Empress and Sultana were going to be staying for a little while longer; honestly I was wondering how normal things could get because of their presence, and I was just hoping that it would be as normal as it had been.

The problem was trouble seemed to follow people as powerful and influential as them, so I wasn’t going to bet anything on it…
