Chapter 1610: Telling The Truth?
Chapter 1610: Telling The Truth?
All three of them felt their hearts drop the moment Bluebird said those words.
The air in the room seemed to shrink, pressing against their chests. Gary, Kai, and Lupus each froze where they stood, eyes darting between one another, trying to figure out the same impossible question: how had this happened? And worse, who was to blame?
Gary was the first to move. A nervous, uneven smile tugged at his lips as he scratched the back of his neck.
“W-what do you mean?” he said, forcing out a laugh that died halfway through. “We’re not here to join the army? Of course we are. We came to become knights, that’s why we took the assessment.”
Bluebird leaned against the stone wall behind him, his expression unreadable. His hair caught the light, and his eyes, cold and sharp, studied them like prey.
“Ha,” he said finally, the sound dry and humorless. “Let’s start with the obvious. The three of you have never been in a city before, have you?”
Kai’s pulse quickened. He wanted to say something, but the words got stuck in his throat.
Bluebird continued, arms crossed. “Your eyes were practically glowing with wonder when we walked through the streets toward the castle. You were gawking at every stall, every guard tower, every piece of stonework like a bunch of children seeing the world for the first time.”
He took a step forward, his boots scraping lightly against the floor. “And furthermore, you didn’t even know the current state of the Red Wing Kingdom. That alone told me plenty. Then there’s the way you reacted when you saw me.You didn’t recognize who I was either, did you?”
Kai’s stomach sank. He knew this was coming. Their earlier conversation they had with each other out and in the open. They’d revealed too much without realizing it. Bluebird, sharp as ever, had caught every slip.
“There’s one more thing,” Bluebird said. “When you fought earlier, I could tell you were all holding back. Desperate, yes, but there was something missing. Like you hadn’t used everything you had.”
He tilted his head slightly, studying them with quiet curiosity. “I have my guesses about what’s going on, but I don’t understand the why. So I’ll give you the chance to explain yourselves before I move to... other methods.”
His tone darkened on the last words. “The mage and other methods are waiting if you decide not to cooperate.”
The silence that followed was heavy, almost suffocating. Bluebird’s words hung in the air like a blade. The three of them couldn’t tell if he was trying to be merciful, or if he was some kind of devil who enjoyed playing with his prey before breaking them.
None of them had to speak to know what the others were thinking. They were trapped. And as usual, when situations got tense like this, Lupus and Gary both turned toward Kai, silently electing him as their voice.
Kai exhaled slowly, the weight of their decision settling on his shoulders. “I guess it’s best for us to just tell the truth,” he said at last, his voice steady but low. “We’ve already gotten into a bit of trouble, and if we keep hiding things, it’ll only get worse. It would be better to have you as an ally than an enemy.”
Bluebird said nothing, his piercing gaze fixed on him.
Kai took another breath, almost like an actor preparing for a difficult scene. “The truth is... the three of us are Werewolves. We’re from the countryside, so we didn’t really know much about how things work here. Not just that, though, we’re also part of Steve’s pack.”
Gary blinked in surprise. He hadn’t expected Kai to reveal that much, but he bit his tongue and stayed quiet. They’d trusted Kai this far, he just had to hope Kai knew what he was doing.
Kai continued carefully. “We lived with Steve, and he told us stories about the Red Wing Kingdom pack. But recently, he said he was worried about Jack, the leader of the pack. Most of the members in Steve’s group know the Red Wing pack personally, but we’re new. They asked us to try and find out what’s going on with Jack.”
He hesitated, choosing his words. “I thought it’d be smarter to join the knights first, to learn what we could from inside, rather than going directly to the pack and risking suspicion.”
When he finished, the room fell silent again. He’d only told Bluebird what was necessary, nothing about where they’d really come from, or the truth about their time. That kind of information would only complicate things.
“Thank you for being honest,” Bluebird said at last, straightening from the wall. His expression softened just slightly. “I figured as much. The three of you had to be Werewolves, there’s not much else that could fight with that kind of speed and strength without Beast Gear or Qi. For future reference, though, you should be careful about showing that kind of power. It draws attention.”
He paused, thoughtful. “You said Steve was worried about Jack? That... actually makes sense. As soon as you mentioned his name, I felt something tighten in my chest.”
Bluebird began pacing slowly. “When we were walking earlier, I told you I’m part of the Council. Jack is as well, one of the key members representing the Red Wing Kingdom. At our last meeting, though, he seemed... off. Lost in his own head. Barely responsive. I asked if something was wrong, but he didn’t tell me anything.”
He frowned, eyes narrowing slightly. “And from the reports I’ve received since then, there’s nothing clear. Just that Jack’s been leaving the city less often than before.”
Kai absorbed the information carefully, his mind racing. It wasn’t exactly the answer they’d been hoping for. If anything, it only confirmed that something was wrong, and that they might eventually have to go directly to the Red Wing Pack themselves.
“I think you did the right thing by coming here first,” Bluebird said finally. “If there’s real trouble brewing, it might be dangerous for you to approach them directly. We have another Council meeting in a week. Before then, I’ll try to gather what information I can. If nothing turns up, I’ll personally introduce you to Jack.”
His tone grew firmer. “That way, he’ll trust you more. Coming with my recommendation will make things easier.”
“A week?” Gary blurted out, his voice cracking slightly. “What are we supposed to do for a whole week?”
For the first time since the conversation began, Bluebird smiled, a genuine one this time. “Didn’t the three of you just pass the knight assessment?” he said, a hint of amusement creeping into his voice. “Why not join the regular knight training sessions for the week? Who knows, you might even learn how to use Qi.”
He gave them a teasing look. “And if you’re lucky, maybe next time you’ll actually be able to beat me.”
