None of them bothered searching the spot. They never expected that the culprit was hiding just a few meters away from them.

Too confident. Too blind.

And it made sense. If someone was there, their senses would have perceived it instantly.

Only the leader and another demon who had suggested the idea remained behind on the spot.

“What will you say to the lord?” the other demon asked in a small tone.

“I don’t know,” the leader replied. “I cannot think of anything that can justify this blunder.”

The leader’s jaw worked soundlessly for a moment, fangs grazing against his lip as if the words themselves were bitter.

“The lord would be beyond furious. Some of us will be executed on the spot,” the demon whispered, feeling the terror in his core.

His wings trembled faintly, folding tighter around his frame as though they could shield him from the lord’s wrath.

“Who could have done this?” the leading demon wondered with knitted brows.

His gaze swept across the ruined ground, lingering on each shadow as though it might peel back and reveal the culprit. A low growl built in his throat, stifled before it escaped.

He could feel no trail. No scent. As if the one who did this had never existed.

“I honestly have no clue. It could be literally any of the lord’s enemies… In the first place, I am not even sure how they found this place. It was supposed to be secret.”

“Whoever it is, they won’t be easy to handle either. Making such a mess and then disappearing in the blink of an eye. We reached here almost instantly.”

“Yes… it’s going to be troublesome.”

They fell silent.

Oliver observed them silently, he stood still and kept his presence null.

He had also signalled Agnes to do the same.

Agnes’s shoulders stiffened, her breath held so long her chest began to ache. A single bead of sweat slid down her temple, but she dared not brush it away.

They remained like that for the next hour before he heard the sounds of the soldiers returning back.

“Sir, we have searched the area thoroughly, there’s not a trace of life around.” One of the soldiers reported.

The leader frowned heavily, he had expected this, contrary to his initial orders, he was not furious.

The muscles around his mouth tightened, his eyes narrowing as if he had already rehearsed the futility of this answer in his mind.

He realized that the culprit was not someone who could be caught by mere troops like them.

To destroy something at this level, the person had to be of some caliber.

The thought crawled across his spine like ice. He flexed his claws against his palm until the skin there cracked faintly.

He felt stressed thinking about lord’s reaction when he would report this news.

A phantom weight settled on his chest, each imagined word of the lord’s rebuke pressing heavier until his breath grew shallow.

Being demoted was the least of his worries at this point, if he could come out back in one piece, he would be grateful.

“We are returning! Half the soldiers remain here on standby and keep track of anything unusual. Report immediately. Understood!?”

“YES, SIR!”

They saluted and divided into groups of two, the leader and the others started retreating back.

Oliver knew this was the opportunity if he wanted to get out of this deserted hell with no sense of direction.

“Agnes, climb on.” He muttered slowly and showed his back to the girl.

“Yes…” She didn’t question anything and quickly obeyed.

Living at the edge of life and death had taught her to not miss any opportunity presented, follow her gut and trust the process.

She quickly climbed on his back.

Maroon energy enveloped the two of them, it was thick and heavy as compared to before.

Oliver was using the Abyss Energy to a greater extent, it would take toll on his body however if he had to get out of this place, this was the only way to do it without getting caught by these soldiers and that demon leading them.

He quietly stalked them, they were on mounts, their speed was quite fast, as time went by, he was slowly feeling the energy drain.

Not only was he using Abyss energy but also to keep with those mounts, he was using a ton of espera at the same time.

Otherwise, if he didn’t do this, he would have lost them long ago given the speed difference.

’I can see it…’

Oliver finally spoted what appeared to be a silhoutte of a massive city.

It was on a completely different scale from the previous city where he appeared first time.

It was massive, towering structures were everywhere, a creepy air was surrounding it, there were black demonic beasts flying in the sky as if they were normal birds.

The skyline bristled with spires, each one clawing at the night. Dark wings wheeled overhead, blotting out the stars in erratic patterns. Even the air itself felt poisoned, thick with a metallic tang that coated his tongue.

’That’s a real demonic city.’ Oliver knew when he saw it.

This was how he pictured a demonic city when he used to read the novel.

Agnes was also in awe, she had spent all her life living in a demonic city so she felt even more stunned by the scale difference between the two.

Her eyes widened, pupils dilating until they nearly swallowed the iris. She clung tighter to Oliver, as if the enormity of what she saw might sweep her away if she didn’t anchor herself.

She had never gotten out of the city, much less explored anything, she felt intimidated by the sheer size of the city.

A shiver threaded down her spine, her throat dry. Even her breaths came in thin, measured sips, as though the city might notice her if she drew in too much air.

However she didn’t dare breath too much either, Oliver had instructed her to be as discrete as she could, even breathing was measured, fearing if she breathed too much, they would be discovered.

Oliver kept following the demonic troops and they soon arrived near the city.
