On Astral Tides: From Humble Freelancer To Astral Emperor

Six Hundred And Eleven

North of Akihabara, we had moved to Ueno and were now sitting by the large lake that occupied the south end of Ueno Park. Various museums, zoos and other facilities occupied the north end, and so brightly coloured lights twinkled in the darkness, but it was a rather more muted display than Akiba’s. The revellers were different too, more quiet couples, and we took advantage of that to get a little more intimate. I had spread down a blanket I had taken from my storage, as well as a small hamper of food and a bottle of wine, alongside three glasses.

Uncorking the wine, I looked fondly at Eri and Shaeula, who were sitting beside me. Several other couples were also having a late-evening picnic nearby, though they were well wrapped up in coats and scarves against the early winter chill. “Are you sure you two aren’t cold?” I asked, and while Shaeula merely shook her head, snickering, Eri flushed slightly, speaking quietly.

“It is a little cold. We can bear it, but… if you are worried, you can put your arms around us.”

“I’ll do that.” I agreed, handing Shaeula the first glass of wine. Eri hesitated, before letting out a quiet sigh.

“I’m not an enamoured with alcohol as you are. But I suppose this is special. I’ve spent Christmas Eves with you and Aiko before, but… this is my first true date.”

“The second-second, no?” Shaeula teased, and Eri waved that away, before taking the glass of fragrant red wine I had poured her.

“We all know that’s semantics. But…”

I sat down between the two of them and cheekily took a sip of my wine without using my hands, a little aether trickling out to hold the glass, so I could wrap my arms around their shoulders and pull them close like Eri wanted. I heard the gasps of several other couples who were taking advantage of the beautiful Christmas atmosphere themselves at my magical display, but I barely paid it any attention, my focus on Eri and Shaeula.

“…at least she feels better. I do too. Aiko’s spending some time with Rika-san and Yae-san, trying to be more genuine. She’s looking forward to the concert too. That’s enough about Aiko though. This is our time.”

“So-so cold, Eri…” Shaeula chortled, enjoying her wine and the closeness between us. “But I do not-not disagree. Aiko’s worries are naught for her to face alone. So long-long as she is true to herself, I shall support her.”

“I would too. Foolish girl. Compared to everything that’s happened in these last few months, nothing shocks me, nothing seems impossible. Now then…” Eri took a sip of the wine cautiously. “It’s good, but… I think I prefer fruit juice.”

“You have-have a child’s palette.” Shaeula teased. “Alcohol is for-for females of wisdom and taste!”

“Oh really?” Eri frowned. “You’re rather young yourself, in terns of the Fae, aren’t you, Shaeula? So don’t try and act all wise, just because you’re a bit older than me.”

“Oho, how-how you wound me!” Shaeula pretended to be stricken. “In truth-truth, yes. I suppose I would be as you are, Eri. Ready to go-go out into the wider world, an adult, but not-not yet wise. Not-not even that vile firefox and all his scheming to weaken and dismay father, to break-break Anna and my siblings, could have forced father to send-send me away as a child. Even if I was-was awfully immature.” She pondered that, amber eyes reflecting the pretty lights hung up in the park’s trees. “Still-still, I have discovered that experience is a great-great teacher. It is the same for you, Eri, is it not-not? And Aiko too, though it seems she is more-more childish and stubborn than we.”

“Yes. I was a child at heart. Scared, needy, envious. Bitter.” Eri’s lips curled into a self-mocking smile, before she glanced at me, and her expression softened to one of joy and contentment. “But you are right, Shaeula. Experience… was all I needed. That and good advice and support. Now… I see it clearly. You were right, much as it pains me, Shaeula. Yes, having Akio to myself on Christmas Eve would be wonderful, but… I don’t hate that you are here too. Nor do I hate Akio making the others happy as well.”

“I am told yandere suits you better-better than tsundere, but as you are quite-quite cute when being earnest, I shall let it slide.” Shaeula joked. “As I have told you, the greatest ennui of the Fae-Fae now is boredom, stagnation. That-that is why I do enjoy having you and the others around. Not-not…” Shaeula insisted. “…I hasten to add-add, that I would ever grow bored of you, Akio. It is simply…”

“I get it.” I promised, patting both their heads, still manipulating my wine. “I feel the same way. For now, we’re going to be too busy to ever be bored, but… one day, when I’m Astral Emperor, and Earth is safe, we’ll have endless days of leisure to enjoy ourselves. With you all, I’ll never be bored or lonely again. Though for a guy like me, that’s hard. To be honest… sitting around just watching TV or reading together sounds rather sweet too.”

“Is that what you’re doing now with Tan?” Eri asked, and I chuckled.

“Yeah. She’s even in a tracksuit I bought her. Somehow it fits her perfectly.”

“I can imagine.” Eri nodded. “She definitely seems the bookish sort. I don’t hate the idea. It reminds me of when I was a child. You used to read books on astronomy to me, and when I was old enough, you’d just watch me read, that smile on your face which showed you were always keeping your thoughts on me. Of course, Aiko would kick up a fuss after a while, and make us go out and catch insects, or play in the streams… she was a nuisance, even then.”

“If she could-could hear you…” Shaeula chuckled, but Eri merely laughed a touch scornfully.

“Aiko’s been causing us grief even lately. But that’s just who she is. As insecure as any of us. But since we have a family tradition of making resolutions for the new year, mother-in-law Emily has always been keen on that, I know Aiko will promise to be honest and brave. As for me… this is the year I’m going to finally be a woman you can lean on, Akio. As well as discover what I truly want to do. Beside you, of course. That’s certain.” She smiled invitingly, and I pecked at her lips, tasting wine. She then addressed Shaeula. “What of you?”

“It is not-not our tradition, but I do approve. Let me see-see…” Shaeula considered it. “…I shall most-most certainly master the elements you have-have, Akio. Especially the manipulation of space-space.” She glanced at the small hamper. “I am most-most envious of Daiyu’s Ring. It offers a great deal of flexibility.” She then looked up at me, a knowing smile on her face. “I dare-dare say you feel guilty towards her, yes?”

“I can’t put anything past you, can I?” My tone was wry. “I do feel bad that she only got the value for a couple of weeks, but… forget that. It’s not Christmas yet!”

“Indeed. And I do have work-work to do once midnight strikes.” Shaeula agreed. “Do not-not worry, I shall see the concert, enjoy some time-time with my friends, and then handle it. You are rather sweet on Haru, though I can-can see why. Are you sure…”

“You know why Akio treats her gently.” Eri broke in, flipping open the hamper and taking out some small snacks. “Nothing good will come of what you’re thinking. Besides, Haru-san contributes as much as anyone towards our successes. It’s only natural Akio treats her well. Besides… it’s his kindness I love. Though I’ve also…” She looked up at me warmly. “…grown to love your determination, your steel. But then, maybe it’s as Shaeula says, and I’m just a fool for love. But I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t love you, Akio.”

As Shaeula snorted her agreement, I took the opportunity to feed them both using my aether. It was cute watching them eat snacks that floated towards their mouths, like baby birds, and my affection spiked. So this is what it feels like to be in love on Christmas Eve. Not just Eri and Shaeula, but… Tan and Shiro, and those who’ve come before, and those such as Kana and Tsukiko, who are still to come… this is a feeling I could take on the world for…

“I wonder just what-what chaos shall take place tomorrow.” Shaeula mused, after licking her lips clean. “This… Christmas dinner, as you call-call it… will be quite the event.”

“That’s right.” Eri agreed. “Even the mansion we live in now doesn’t have the space to easily accommodate it. We’ve had to bring in more tables to put in the living room. It’s going to be packed. But what about your family, Shaeula?”

“Oh.” She shrugged. “It is not-not a day we celebrate. And Ling should certainly have-have a break from her duties. Yet it would not-not do for me to be completely unaccompanied. No-no doubt my siblings will fight for the right to attend. Sister Anna will surely win.”

“I think so too.” Eri rolled her eyes. “I’m surrounded by sisters who have odd inclinations.”

“I think Aiko might be angry if you compare her to Anna.” I chuckled. “Don’t get me wrong, I like Anna, but… she’s intense when it comes to you, Shaeula. I haven’t forgotten the beating she gave me under the guise of training.

“That-that is Anna.” Shaeula seemed a little embarrassed by her fervour. “Of course, were I to-to mention baseball…”

“Fair enough.” I surrendered. “You’ve got me there. I’m as bad as Anna. Though I won’t accept I’m as foolish as Shaeraggo. I’d never go as far as he did and threaten or harm my sis, even for her own good.”

“Yes, I agree my foolish brother is quite-quite hopeless. It is fortunate that he has Selensha and Phaelae to keep-keep him in line.”

“I still don’t know that much about your family.” Eri mused. “I still… have some mixed feelings about your brother…”

“It is quite-quite understandable, Eri. I was greatly moved when you did-did stand up to him on my behalf, despite you being so weak-weak then…”

I listened to the two of them talk quietly, sipping at my wine, upending the bottle with deft handling of aether to refill our glasses. This is… nice. They’re right. Sometimes I do need to relax. Besides… I definitely enjoyed every more intense date, but these quiet moments, where I could just grasp a feeling of contentment, moved my heart as well.

“You are smiling.” Tan spoke suddenly in the mansion, looking up from the book she was idly flipping through. Damn, she looks great in glasses and with a ponytail. Though it’s probably vaguely sacrilegious thinking that. She’s a Goddess, she’s always beautiful. I just… like the style.

“Did you read something amusing?” she asked, raising one crimson eyebrow, pushing up her fashionable glasses idly. “Or is it your other date?”

“Jealous?” I asked, teasing her, and she shot me a flat gaze.

“What have I to be jealous of? I am assured of my allure, I know you feel deeply fortunate to have won my… yes, princess, I know… our hearts. Still, you are surely aware, all women at their core, are needy and jealous creatures, when it comes to love. Your path is hard. Perhaps even as difficult to tread as your Path.” Her tone made the distinction clear. “So, what amuses you so?”

“Oh, nothing much. And I wasn’t just thinking of Shaeula and Eri. I was also thinking spending quiet times here with you was soothing as well. It still surprises me, you know. After our first rather acrimonious clash and the outcome of that, and all the time we’ve spent together since… I didn’t think you’d be so… so easy-going.”

Tan snorted, showing what she thought of that. “Is it not natural to display different emotions, greater will, when the situation calls for it? Then you were an enemy, a threat to my plans, yet… the princess had no wish for you to die. I admit, it would have grieved me, to torment her so, but she had agreed. Yes, yes you did, princess.” It seemed she was having an internal dispute with Shiro. “It is as Akio says. The agreement you had with me was greatly in my favour. I had no intention of swindling you, but I had deemed it necessary to my goal to drink deep of what Akio held. And indeed it was. I would surely have triumphed with the power of the Seeds, but… such distinctions are meaningless now. I am not a gambler, you know.” Her scarlet gaze was firm and resolved, and perhaps it was just my ego, but I definitely detected great affection there.

“Even when I decided to use my father’s Divine Favour in an unorthodox manner, use the princess as a means to remain here and cheat the agreements the Pantheons are bound by… I knew at worst I would be defeated and could return with the princess to my own Territory. Yes, the world would have been destroyed or fallen into the clutches of others, but… such a fate was likely regardless. And even now…” Her smile was so very inviting, and I found myself flushing as I remembered our night together, which only intensified her wicked grin. “…while I am certain all the cards are in your favour, as the princess might say, what with my aid, and the aid of your Valkyries, this world is still strange, and many dangers lurk. But if we fail… again, it is no gamble. The Eye I bear through my connection to you, and the small powers I have stolen… and of course our many allies… it would be rather trying to retrieve so many people, yet I am sure it would be possible. There are still gains, and even if neither of us ever reaches Astral Emperor in this place… our path to growth is not cut off, merely… different. To heighten your League further and spark Divinity, managing your Path… it would be a different, greater challenge in the Pantheons, but one I would support you fully with.”

League, huh? Oh, that reminds me… “I’m glad we’d be able to save as many of our friends and family as possible. But I don’t want to think of defeat. Because there’s no way we could save everyone in those circumstances, is there?” Tan’s silence was the answer I expected, so I changed the subject. “When it comes to your previous question about breaking a mountain with a punch, I didn’t consider League. Wouldn’t someone with a League like yours be able to break it through force of existence?”

“It is not quite as easy to ignore Material Laws as you seem to think, Akio.” Tan’s tone was gently mocking. “While Mortal Laws are subordinate to Spiritual Laws, they are also at their core, more foundational, and thus harder to evade completely, though weakening their grasp comes with the rising level of one’s existence. Yes, it is possible, though even at my level, I would not deign to believe I could destroy a mountain with but one fist. Those above me… yes, their existence would dominate and reduce the mountain to mere scraps of rubble. But that again is not pure Might.”

“Nor is borrowing adherence or some other means from others.” I pointed out, and she shrugged.

“There is indeed a distinction. And there are certainly… obscure… ways to raise one’s Might to absurd levels. A Cultivator of the Dao of Strength, for example, would rely on pure, unabashed power. How should I phrase it? Yes, I suppose I could say they would seek to tame a Material Law, that of your Physics. The transmission and effect of applied force. Such a feat is difficult though. Far easier to travel a Dao of Thunder, and shatter your target with the fury of lightning, or even pure Destruction, which does not rely on lower Laws. Do you see why?” she asked, looking like a prim and proper gym teacher who was taking over another class at school.

“Yeah. I’d say any highschooler could answer that. You’d need equal Fortitude too, or when you punch the mountain, you’re going to blow yourself apart with the backlash. Every force has an equal and opposite reaction. Sure, wrecking a mountain with a punch sounds awesome, but… you’re right. It’d be easier to do it via other methods. Though that begs the question… why even follow such a Dao? If I had to guess, it’s what you said earlier… subordinate, yet foundational.”

“Exactly.” Tan agreed. “Raw, unadulterated Might is not easy to ignore. After all, force is a universal currency of violence. And potent Fortitude prevents harm as surely as a grand shield of aether would.”

“I see. It all comes down to the foundations again. Well, don’t worry…” I gave her a teasing smile, amused to see Tan’s skin darkening a little. Come on, your Charm is only limited by what Shiro’s body can contain, you shouldn’t be flustered by me! It’s damn cute though… “I certainly won’t be slacking off on my training to raise my Levels and stats. Though again, I’ll hit my limits sooner or later. Even dredging out the seas surely won’t get me to Level one thousand. At some point it stops being feasible…”

“Good. Yes, you must never stop working hard. Though proper rest is a part of that.” Tan repeated.

“I know, I get it.” I chuckled ruefully. “Besides, I’ve already made enough progress for the day. It’s just nice to sit here and relax.”

“In that case, perhaps you should do more reading and less staring at me.” Tan grumbled, though from her tone she was actually pleased.

“Sorry, but you do draw my eyes.” I teased, enjoying seeing her slightly flustered. Sometimes I found it hard to believe she was surely thousands of years old, but then, personality wasn’t just formed by age, but also by experiences. And don’t frown at me. In your heart you’re eighteen, I know!

“In that case…” Tan gave a long sigh and closed her book with a gentle thud. “…we may as well take a stroll. There is a matter we should attend to anyway. The princess thinks it is time, her previous… buff…” Tan found our terminology both clean and amusing. “…having recently expired. And while there have been some… interruptions… during her training, she still desires for your Christmas gift to be as spectacular as possible.”

“I don’t mind, although…” I paused, dragging out the moment, before delivering teasing words with a smile. “…you look so adorable I’m not sure I want others to see you like this!”

Tan grunted, crossing her arms defensively, though again, she looked far from displeased. “What nonsense. I can understand if I was wearing revealing clothing, but I am fully covered. Do you wish to keep me locked up in your arms, forever away from the world? The sentiments are charming, I suppose, but…” She trailed off, eyes widening slightly, Shiro no doubt ribbing her for failing to spot the joke. “…Ah. You were simply toying with my emotions. I can see I still have much to learn.”

“Not entirely.” I promised, feeling slightly guilty, but delighting in her shy expression, as I extended a hand to her. She took it as we got off the bed, her skin hot. “I’m quite jealous, we all know that. And I do want to keep you to myself, and you definitely look great, but then, you always do. But I’d not want to restrict you that way. Though like you said, if you were more… exposed… then I’d certainly not let other eyes fall on you. I’m glad both of you have shed the name of the Buddha from your Skills.”

“As are we.” Tan affirmed. We strode out, greeted by a number of servants, and soon reached the Ring Gate. Tan observed it, her grip tightening on mine. “This is rather convenient. Of course, with the sheer scale of the Pantheons, such methods of travel are both commonplace, and a necessity. Your arrangements do offer vulnerabilities, though. I can see the princess’ efforts are necessities. I am satisfied with your plans for the… redistribution, though. They are not too dissimilar to those the Six Paths employ. Territories have many advantages, but… also their weaknesses, at least for now.”

“Yeah, I never really thought of it, but I should have. When I was in Las Vegas, if Kondou Kazuo wasn’t a lazy piece of shit, my Anchor should have been destroyed and it’d all be over. But to have my Anchor, Asha’s Tree and the Ring Gates all together… too many eggs in one basket. Besides, when we expand Gates around the world, we’re going to have a vast amount of traffic anyway. Though…” I frowned. “…there’s one experiment I really want to try using Nie Ling, Ginneka and Hyacinth. But there’s no time right now.”

“Indeed. Time is precious. The most precious thing of all. There is no turning back to what was, and while it is possible to stretch what is, and what shall be… such is beyond my powers. Hence why the princess is eager to begin.” We stepped into the Gate and reappeared in my Territory, after the seemingly endless but also instant moment of dislocation, which I studied as always, trying to glean further insights.

Several Fae and even a few off-duty trainees and members of Fenrir, the erstwhile Black Wolf Company, greeted us. We exchanged brief pleasantries and then headed for Asha’s towering Rhyming Tree. At the base, Asha was waiting, alongside Magatama, as if they were expecting us. Answering my silent question was Shiro, who Tan was allowing to speak.

“They’re both experts, Aki. Asha’s Tree has been under my buffs nearly non-stop for ages now, and as for Magatama… she’s born for buffing. Poor woman. She and I are kindred spirits. I’ll drink the day away with her tomorrow! They are coming to dinner, right?”

“Yeah. Of course. You don’t think I could leave Tsurugi out, do you? And her sisters are mine, I guess.”

“Technically, they’d be your daughters too. They even call you that when they forget to make an effort.” Shiro was loving how uncomfortable that made me feel. “You’ve got your little Goblin daughter too, and your Tengu sister…”

“I’m just lucky that Tarōbō is staying upon Mount Atago…” I grimaced, thinking of the upcoming chaos, though that grimace quickly faded into a smile. “… but Arangbō might well be accompanying his sister.”

“Yeah, madness. And before you say anything…” Shiro’s voice changed, and her single onyx eye was resolute. “…no, I’m not reaching out to my parents. I’m not the only one who won’t have her family there. Fortunately, while my parents are selfish, it seems they know shame, and haven’t bothered me, despite surely knowing what’s going on. I’ve been on TV plenty, after all.” She seemed proud of that. “If they do hassle me though…” her voice changed to a needy, wheeling tone, which made me smile. “…then you can just pay them all the money they spent raising me and send them on their way. Just like buying me. They’ll understand that. Everything has a price to them. Besides… family isn’t just blood ties, is it? That’s what marriage is, finding a new family through love. Shit, I’m getting all sentimental. Got to get in the mood. Especially around Asha. Not fair otherwise.” She, or rather, Tan, waved her hand at the two approaching women. “Hey you two. Ready for the big guns? Shirohime’s got something special for you! It isn’t just Santa bringing the gifts, nor even Anesidora. I’d say call me Mother Shiro, but…” She glanced at Asha’s belly, and there certainly was a small bulge now, far more pronounced than it should have been for how far along she was, even with twins. “…let’s not be confusing.”

Asha smiled warmly. “Indeed. Though one day too, you shall be blessed I know. Or should I say, you both shall be?”

Tan inclined her head slowly, perhaps pondering it, while Shiro guffawed. “I’m a bit young for that yet. And honestly, might be a bit risky, what with the state of my body, being linked to Tan…” The black eye stared at me. “Yeah, in time. But I want to grow up a bit more first. Not everyone’s mature enough to make a good parent. Trust me, I know.”

“You shall have no troubles.” Asha promised. “There are many who would aid us. It is a strange concept for me, but not an unpleasant one. What say you, Magatama?”

With her mysterious black eyes and crystalline green hair, and ripe, womanly figure, coupled with her gentle temperament, she came across as rather priestly in nature. Her lips curved into a soft smile, and she agreed. “Our father… sorry, my brother…”

You are doing that on purpose, I know you are!

“…is indeed blessed to have many who surround him. I too… as an older sibling, would be happy to offer my humble assistance, for what it’s worth. The burgeoning flame of a new life… is a precious spark that should be kindled. Just as we were restored from the ashes, sunlight once more shining upon us.”

“Profound words.” Asha agreed. “We Dryads know little of the sun, the Moon our precious light, yet… now I have seen it, I appreciate it.” She gently patted the trunk of her Tree. “As does my other half. For it grows not just here, but it has branches that reach for the light there too.”

“This is all getting a bit heavy.” Shiro muttered. “All right. Let’s… lighten… get it, Aki?” she couldn’t help but make a joke. “…the mood. Oh, and don’t worry, Asha. This might be a bit alarming, you being a Dryad and all, but… this fire isn’t going to burn your Tree. And fire… well, we get a double win with you, right Magatama?” It seemed Tan had partially released her Divine Possession, as one of Shiro’s hands had regained its pale skin, the fingers slightly different. She waved her arm, and her fire bloomed crimson, orange, gold, violet and other colours all intermingled with it, a living blaze of adherence.

Magatama nodded. “Indeed, I feel… that fire is welcoming, that… it was always meant to dwell within me.” She reached out, and as her hand touched Shiro’s new flames, the Flames Of Gifts And Blessings, it was sucked into her body. Her black eyes now shone with the same colours as the flames, a brilliant and wonderous sight, and even her crystalline hair began to glow, faint tongues of fire flickering.

“I fear my character is being copied…” Tan grumbled, though not unkindly.

“No way.” I reassured her. “Nobody could ever replace you, Tan. Besides… shouldn’t we be watching?”

Tan’s crimson eye glittered with amber sparkles at my words, and with my own Eyes I peered at Magatama. The stolen… borrowed… adherence from Anesidora, combined with other adherence that Shiro was pulling in from elsewhere, was absorbed, but Shiro wasn’t done.

“All right… time for the real fun.” Her eye twitched, and I could feel her Berserk Blessing kicking in on herself, and another surge of flames, more brilliant than before, roared to life. Magatama, without hesitation, absorbed that as well, and then Shiro also passed the Berserk Blessing to her.

“I see. The Berserk Blessing Of Blood has a low affinity with Magatama. In fact, it perhaps should be rejected…” Tan murmured, seeing what I was. “…but despite it clearly being a harmful effect, since it is used in such a manner, and contributes to growth… she can amplify it…”

Magatama grimaced, the energies permeating her. Even her pale skin was translucent now, taking on a jade-like sheen, though within, energies raged, before calming down, becoming gentle. “Yes, it is… not a pleasant power. The flame… yes, that is kind, comforting. A warmth that reminds me of…” Her expression faltered, puzzlement in her eyes. “No, it escapes me. But it doesn’t matter. I am here and now… once more able to spread warmth and benevolence!”

Reaching out a hand to both Asha and her Tree, Magatama then shone brilliantly, and flames surrounded Asha like a halo, and a ring formed around the great Rhyming Tree, before it exploded into an almost liquid-like blaze, similar to Foehn, yet not destructive.

As the fires raced up the side of the Tree, Shiro remarked that we were getting our Christmas decorations here after all, and I couldn’t help but agree. As the Tree finally soaked in the enhanced flames, the sudden weight of aether around us intensified, the skies a vivid mass of glittering lightning, aurorae swirling around our Territory like thunderclouds. Ether began to rain down with greater intensity, almost like a snowy blizzard, and I let out a worried laugh. “No kidding. We’ve even got snow now. But… isn’t this a little strong? Won’t this cause problems?”

“Yes. Undoubtedly.” Tan agreed. “The ether density here is quickly reaching levels a Boundary cannot sustain. Fortunately, I do believe the issue can be… sidestepped… somewhat, by quickly upgrading the Territory and allowing it to integrate with the lower shallows of the Astral proper.” She tutted then, impressed. “To do so much in such a short time. Earth is indeed abnormal, but even so, to put all these puzzle pieces together to form this solution impresses me.”

“Isn’t it bad to collapse the Boundary?” I swore I could hear the skies cracking, though I knew that was surely just my paranoia. I didn’t even try to estimate the sheer output of Asha’s Tree, since I promised I wouldn’t check until Christmas Day… just a few hours more. I can wait, I can… but with the stacked buffs further enhanced by a stage it was beyond my expectations.

“Oh, certainly. It is far too soon. Though I would be able to release more of my true strength, at least as much as the princess can withstand, so fear not.” Tan shook her head, crimson ponytail bouncing, the light from above reflecting off the lenses in her glasses. “However, another fortunate circumstance has arisen which means we can avoid an immediate sundering. Normally, the arrival of Territories of the Fourth Heightening begins the collapse, yet here, Earth already has those of even the Fifth Heightening. I suggest we utilise that, and…” Tan frowned. “Never mind. That is a topic for later.”

It most certainly is! “There’s another worry. I know huge amounts of ether can draw in beings from the lower Astral, especially when an etheric tide happens. Isn’t it likely our enemies, like the damn toad, might sense this and take action?”

“Again, perhaps.” Tan agreed. “Though we are not yet prepared, I am confident we can put up a fight against the creature if we must. Besides…” Around us, ratkin and weaselkin workers were ferrying over the deposited ether, moving mobile Silos back and forth through the Ring Gate. “…at least we are storing the bounty securely, which will minimise the temptation. But I agree, it is no long-term solution. Such problems we can deal with. Even if the Boundary is sundered, it will take a little time to collapse entirely. And though it seems laughable, I would not be surprised if in a year, you manage the Fifth Heightening. If anyone had told me before I ventured here such would happen, I would have mocked them for their foolish idiocy and wild optimism.  Yet every time we slow down, somehow we conspire to then go even faster towards our goals.”

Our goals. It makes me happy to hear that.

I turned to Asha. “How is it? Can you manage it? Is your Tree fine?”

Asha chuckled softly. “There is some small discomfort, but… my Tree grows strong.”

Yeah, the Berserk Blessing… back in the Material, I explained to Shaeula and Eri that I’d like their help to mitigate it, through the new thread of Lovers’ Link, just as Shiro and Tan were doing. The blessing was furious, magnified by the fact Shiro was using it on herself and Magatama, but with help, it would be less punishing than before.

“Certainly.” Shaeula agreed. We’d been spending a pleasant time just drinking wine, eating snacks and having fun conversation, but at my request her amber eyes gleamed wickedly. “But I shall-shall need your Soothing Waters.” She opened her mouth, clearly asking for a kiss, and I chuckled, giving up. There were still those couples around us in the park, but with Shaeula here, who didn’t have the Japanese sense of modesty, I’d already been forced, if you could call it that, since I never hated showing the girls affection, to offer them some quiet kisses. This time though, when our lips met, Shaeula’s tongue sought mine, and she greedily gulped at my saliva.

“Now you…” Shaeula grinned, a faint splatter of my spit gleaming on her lips. Eri needed no second invitation, pulling me close, kissing me so fiercely that her control slipped, and her cat ears sprung to life. She too twisted her tongue passionately with mine, eagerly seeking my fluids, and I was breathless when she pulled away, droplets of moisture falling.

“Not that you need a reason to kiss me.” Eri insisted. “Though I’m not as bold as you, Shaeula. I’m a bit embarrassed people were watching.”

“Liar.” Shaeula smirked, though not unkindly, merely teasing her rival wickedly. “I know-know you, Eri. You like to make your place in Akio’s affections clear, to ward-ward off those… ‘buzzing flies’ as you call them. I understand you now-now. Just as Hinata does, and Shiro too-too. I have stopped being… reckless, have I not-not? Though I shall never back down on gathering those who are truly-truly worthy for Akio, or those he comes to love.”

“And that’s fine.” Eri agreed quietly, licking her lips clean, since they needed to avoid wasting my spit, as it had a slight soothing effect. “I don’t want Akio to simply gather others because he can. But for those he should, I’m tolerating… no, tolerating is the wrong way to put it… I’m accepting it. There’s even a couple who I think Akio should probably consider more positively, though of course, it’s on them to earn it too. I just don’t want… look, can you imagine the hell next Christmas Eve would be, if Akio ended up dating all of Adamant? We’d be going on group dates on buses, like the Pilgrimage!” She blew air out disconsolately as she pouted a little, her cat ears lying flat against her midnight-black hair. “I like spending time with you too, Shaeula, and I’m happy, but… if a dozen members of AKB0048 were here, for example, there’d be no intimacy, would there?”

“I indeed-indeed am repenting on my foolishness!” Shaeula promised. “Even now, I am most-most grateful Akio can split himself in two, for it means we get twice as much time with him. I can not-not help but cheer for those that I like who seek him though. Happiness… to share it makes-makes me joyful.”

“Yeah, but share it too much and we’ll have none left for us. But I don’t want to ruin our date arguing, especially not when I know you’re making an effort. At least you don’t get off from it like Shiro does.” Eri rolled her eyes.

“If she hears that she’ll cry.” I teased. “Anyway, just let me know when the effect of the Resonance Link becomes too much. But with the five of us supporting it, I think we’ll be able to push the boundaries of what we could do before…”

“Five of us?” Eri shook her head. She exchanged a glance with Shaeula, before pulling out her phone. She fired off a message, and I couldn’t help but take a look. ‘Stop what you are doing, and everyone with Lovers’ Link, start taking your share! I won’t tolerate shirking!’ Damn, Eri. Coming on strong. Replies were starting to ping in, but Eri covered the screen with her hand, glancing at me with exasperation. “No peeking. This is a chat for just us girls. But have a little faith. Nobody is weak enough to let this stop us.”

She was right, as I could feel more and more of the rampaging energies that Shiro’s Berserk Blessing unleashed, and the agony it caused, being siphoned off through the newly enhanced bonds. Soon I could barely feel it at all, though I knew in time it would grow.

“That’s fine, but… nobody is to suffer more than they need to, okay?” I warned. “I’m not putting anyone at risk just to save some time. The situation isn’t that desperate.”

“It is because the situation is not-not urgent, that we should try-try harder.” Shaeula disagreed. “Better now to work hard, so we have the leisure to face-face any future emergencies. Besides…” Her smile was wicked. “…it is good-good training for Determination and Resilience, no?”

“That’s true…” I agreed helplessly. “Anyway, thanks. It does mean that Haru’s first gift isn’t a problem. Not that it would have been regardless, but… we have an embarrassment of riches right now.”

“Princess Ffionnan would most-most certainly approve!” Shaeula giggled, and we raised our glasses, clinking them together in a toast, before I continued to revel in their company, while in the Boundary, Tan, Magatama, Asha and I did the same, the maids having brought us fruity Fae alcohol…

“Here you are. Your time is almost up I’m afraid.” Kana had tracked us down, which made sense, as I was planning on taking her out in Ueno anyway before the concert. Kana wanted the proper dating experience, so I was going to show her the fruits of my experience. Which admittedly has been crammed into the last few months, but hey, it all counts.

She was wearing a long grey coat, in deference to the cold, but seeing Shaeula and Eri in their pretty Christmas outfits, she quickly unbuttoned it, revealing her own stylish attire. She was wearing maroon tight skinny jeans and a tight white t-shirt, embossed with a golden snowflake pattern. Her hairclip I had brought her back from America was resting in her hair, which was pulled into a ponytail as well. Seeing that, I frowned, and she shrugged, a little pink-cheeked, and not from the cold.

“I get the impression you like these sorts of styles.” Kana spoke knowingly, as I took her coat, neatly folding it and stowing it in my storage.

“I won’t deny it. But you always look great. Today though… that looks amazing on you. I’m a lucky bastard.”

Kana let out a soft giggle, exchanging a glance with Eri and Shaeula. Eri shrugged while Shaeula echoed Kana’s laugh. “Yes, you are.” Kana agreed. “Though I’m not so arrogant as to say I’m the most beautiful woman around anymore, I know my own value. I know yours too.” She took my arm, sitting down on the blanket. “It’s pretty here. A cute idea for a date.”

“It was indeed.” Eri nodded. “The only sad thing is the lights of Tokyo are too bright. In Nishimorioka I’d be able to see the stars.”

“I have three stars shining beside me right here.” I managed the cheesy, yet heartfelt, line with a straight face. Eri rolled her eyes, Shaeula snickered, and Kana lightly punched my arm.

“Don’t try too hard. Just be yourself.” She rewarded me with a kiss on the cheek though, bold for Kana. “Anyway, sorry, but I’ve got to steal him from you now. After all, the concert’s on in a bit over an hour, and I don’t want to miss it. We’ll see you there, though… I’ll be monopolising him.”

“It’s fine.” Eri stood, carefully straightening her dress, as did Shaeula. Eri tided away the blanket, wrapping the empty hamper, bottles and glasses carefully. “You’ve proved to me you’re worth that reward.”

Kana flushed. “Seriously, don’t do that. Getting a compliment out of you makes me feel weird. I’m not Aiko-chan. But… for what it’s worth…” She held out a hand to Eri, who took it, Shaeula grinning and adding hers to their handshake. “…I admire you too. You never pretend, do you? Always so fierce and honest.”

“I pretended my whole childhood. I’m just over it.” Eri shrugged. “Now go on. Have fun. Make some memories. After all, tomorrow will be… surely something special…”

“No kidding.” Kana agreed, taking my arm. “I just hope Keomi-chan doesn’t cause a scene.”

“I think-think we merely have to worry she eats so much cake she passes out…” Shaeula joked. Meanwhile, it wasn’t just here in Tokyo my next date appeared. Back in the Boundary, Tsukiko had arrived, a gentle smile on her face not entirely masking the anticipation she was displaying, her hands opening and closing nervously.

If Kana was cute in a fashionable, youthful yet sexy way, Tsukiko’s cute in a slightly shy, yet unbearably beautiful way. Though neither trumps the other. They both have their charms. Everyone does.

“I am sorry to intrude. I feel slightly ashamed that my date will merely be me indulging in a little selfishness, rather than being helpful.” Tsukiko apologised to Tan, who merely waved that aside.

“Nonsense. I feel, as I know Akio does, that you have too great a sense of responsibility. It may sound… rather ludicrous… coming from me, but…” Tan leaned in, offering her advice. “…you have given of yourself enough. We Divine beings are no less fallible than you are. Stronger, certainly. Wiser, perhaps. Yet we still think and feel as you do. So now is the time to follow your own heart.”

“That’s right.” Shiro agreed. “Tsuki, we perfect humans have to stick together. Oh, you look great in that dress, by the way.”

Indeed, Tsukiko did. Her brilliant scarlet dress was wound with silver threads, and it was paired with a dazzling silver belt, and a white scarf around her neck. Her flowing black hair was adorned with red and white flower hairpins, matching her crimson eyes, and the combined effect was to make her seem like the very image of a beautiful gender-swapped Santa.

“Thank you. My sense of fashion is still not developed, but…” she glanced at me. “Emily…” she still struggled a bit to say my mom’s name without honorifics, but my mom just bulldozed through all objections when it came to her daughters-in-law. “…helped me. Do you like it?”

Her eyes were clearly showing her need for an answer, so I took her hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze. “Déjà vu. Yes, you look gorgeous in whatever you wear, be it your shrine maiden attire, or casual clothes. Today though… you’re a vision in red and white. It’s very festive and also hints at your heritage. I like it!” I gave her a thumbs up with my free hand, and she chuckled bashfully.

“I am glad. Well then…” She bowed to the others. “I shall take him to Kyoto. Perhaps we shall see you later, atop the terrace?” She glanced up at Asha’s Tree.

“I shall be there.” Asha promised, whereas Shiro was going to return to see the concert.

“Great. Later then.” I said my farewells, leading Tsukiko towards the Ring Gate. “Sorry…” I spoke suddenly. “I really wanted to have our date in the Material, I’ve things I want you to experience, things I’d like you to enjoy, but… the scheduling just couldn’t be made to work.”

“I hardly care.” Tsukiko tightened her grip on my hand. “After all… I shall, as noble Taṇhā intimated, have many an occasion to enjoy my life. Though I would not wish you to think I am unhappy now. Far from it.” Her expression was bashful, but her words brooked no argument. “After all… I am reconciled with my parents. They are still awkward and hesitant around me, but time is a great healer. And tomorrow… I shall spend time with them, and my new family. My very expansive family…” Her lips twitched with amusement.

“It even now contains my best friend, who I have watched grow into a fine woman. That is both surprising, and also somehow expected, as Eri has constantly complained of.” Tsukiko giggled then, sounding as young as her appearance seemed. “I am deeply moved by everyone’s kindness, willingness to accept me. And I yearn for your love. Declaring it to Tsukuyomi made me understand I was incomplete. However…” Her smile was now one of resolve. “…it also made me understand that your words are true. I do not have to sacrifice anything. I shall still serve as the Diviner, no, as half of the Diviner, with you as my partner. My respect and devotion to the Gods, even as if Taṇhā declares, they are imperfect, shall not change. After all… they brought me you, Yukiko, and the many new friends and family that cherish me.”

“Sure. Whatever you desire.” I promised, stroking her long, beautiful hair, which felt like cool silk. “So anyway, we’ll have tea with Prince Shōtoku, like you wanted, and then… well, it may be the Boundary, but I still have a few ideas for how to show you a good time…”

Yeah, I’ve had to get boundlessly creative, and I’m still not done. Fortunately… Looking at both Tsukiko and Kana, in different worlds, and with different, yet equally heartwarming emotions, my two bodies both smiled warmly. …it’s true what my father always said. A man has to grow up when he gets a girlfriend. So I’ve had to grow beyond all my expectations and limits, and there’s still further to climb…
