Chapter 195 – War in the Final Stretch!
[Chapter Size: 2100 Words.]
Third Person POV
Konoha, Year 40.
…
…
Months had passed since Minato had returned from the Village of the Waterfall, and the war was nearing its final moments. Everyone could feel it. There were no longer intense battles with desperate operations, save for the occasional skirmish here and there, but neither side was as committed to gaining ground against Konoha.
At Camp 12, Minato followed an exhausting routine. He had to manage the camp, and in his scarce free time, he trained his Armament Haki. Often, he would spend the night at the training grounds instead of sleeping in his tent.
Mikoto always left something for him to eat or, in some cases, brought food directly to the main command tent when he was too busy to dine and had to work instead. It was a grueling routine, but he approached it with responsibility.
Minato managed the camp exceptionally well, supported by sub-leaders who oversaw its various sectors. Combined with his experience, he was essential to the camp’s operation. He frequently assisted commanders in other camps, having traveled through many over the past two years, in addition to taking charge of this advanced post. This wealth of knowledge enabled Minato to keep the camp running smoothly, despite his young age.
While his administration wasn’t extraordinarily superior to that of other commanders, his ideas made the camp significantly safer. He implemented a clear rule: no ninja was to go on a mission without a medic on their team. If a team lost their medic, they were not allowed to return to the battlefield until they were properly reinforced.
Missions began being carried out by larger squads as well. While a normal team of four people with a leader was the norm, Minato started organizing squads of 6 to 20 teams for missions, with an average of 24 individuals divided into eight teams.
This change improved mission success rates. Minato also introduced advanced strategies for organizing these squads, ensuring that teams protected their rear and flanks to avoid surprises while advancing through enemy lines. Moreover, he required the presence of a sensory ninja for every 20 members, as well as a medic for every four ninjas. Hyūgas, with their Byakugan, were often chosen as sensors when none were otherwise available.
These measures increased success rates, but the most impactful factor in reducing casualties was the distribution of kunai marked with the Hiraishin seal to all teams. Minato mandated that each team leader carry one of these kunai. If a team was ambushed or directly attacked by the enemy, the leader would throw the marked kunai to call for reinforcements.
Minato could sense the kunai from any distance. He would quickly create a clone that used the Hiraishin to teleport to the location. If the clone was destroyed, Minato would go to the scene himself to rescue the team. His presence, being much stronger than that of a clone, allowed him to save as many ninjas as possible in critical situations.
Of course, the success rate wasn’t 100%, as many unforeseen factors could arise. For example, a clone of Minato might appear in the middle of an explosion, and upon checking the site personally, it could already be too late to save anyone. Additionally, there were cases where the leader lost the kunai or died before other team members could use it, often resulting in the entire team’s demise as they couldn’t escape.
Nonetheless, the overall results improved significantly, with an 80% increase in ninja survival rates. This shocked everyone as reports began to arrive in Konoha and other camps. Minato now commanded the camp with the lowest mortality rate in the entire western warfront, perhaps even in the ninja world at that time. His popularity was at its peak. After all, he wasn’t just a ninja capable of injuring enemies at Kage levels but also someone who saved countless shinobi from his village, pulling them out of previously impossible situations.
Mission success rates also improved due to his strategies. His camp boasted the highest success rates for missions of all ranks. In the case of S-rank missions, when Minato personally led a squad, the failure rate was practically nonexistent.
The Hokage had written to him some time ago, expressing how impressed he was with Minato’s results. There were even rumors of disputes in the village among ninjas eager to be sent to his camp. Many were requesting transfers because of the fame he had earned.
Of course, Minato also received less positive letters. One of them expressed dissatisfaction with what he had done in the Village of the Waterfall. After all, he had invaded a neutral country, threatened its leader, and eliminated every ninja he encountered.
At the same time, the Hokage had to admit that Minato wasn’t entirely wrong in not allowing the Village of the Waterfall to leave routes open for Stone Village ninjas to cross into the borders, strengthening the northern enemies and leaving Konoha vulnerable to surprise attacks. While dissatisfaction with his actions was greater this time, Minato had enough credit in this war to justify even a conflict with the Village of the Waterfall, and no one would question him—especially when he could provide evidence justifying his attack.
“The elders, along with the Hokage, aren’t pleased with your actions,” Mikoto remarked one day.
Minato didn’t seem concerned. “I don’t care. They’re just old fools afraid of losing their seats. If they cause too much trouble… I’ll have to deal with them soon.”
Among the S-rank missions, Minato frequently faced Jinchūriki, and occasionally, even the Tsuchikage himself would come to confront him. Sometimes, they ended up battling each other. The Tsuchikage would try to kill him but rarely succeeded, even when using Dust Release. Minato was fast enough to escape.
The first time they met, the Tsuchikage looked at him curiously after not seeing him for so long. “I’m impressed with what you did to the Raikage, but that won’t happen with me.”
From then on, a battle would always ensue whenever they crossed paths. Despite this, Minato and his team maintained a 70% success rate in these confrontations, retreating only when necessary. When Minato sensed that the situation was unfavorable, he ordered everyone to retreat, and in many cases, he completed the mission alone, thanks to his infiltration skills. This left the old Tsuchikage extremely frustrated, as even with all his efforts, he couldn’t capture the young Konoha ninja.
Outside of the camp and its administration, Minato received updates about the war in other camps and learned that a new leader had finally arrived in the south. Sakumo Hatake had come to the southern camp to replace Orochimaru, the Hokage’s favorite, who had been reassigned to lead the northern border camp.
As Sakumo became active, he pushed Suna Village back again, trying to gain ground and invade Konoha. Sakumo often fought against Shukaku himself, as Suna ninjas had started using him strategically due to their poisons no longer being as effective as they had been in the early years.
One notable event occurred just before Orochimaru left the camp after Sakumo’s arrival. Tsunade’s brother and Tsuna’s uncle, Nawaki, was ambushed during a mission. During the attack, he witnessed his entire team being wiped out. Injured, he remembered the kunai Minato had given him months earlier. Amid the chaos, he used his chakra on the kunai to call for reinforcements.
At that moment, Minato was speaking with one of the camp leaders, receiving a recent report. Suddenly, he sensed the kunai’s mark and knew something was wrong in the south. Without hesitation, he disappeared from the tent—something that had become common for those around him. Even in the middle of important meetings, Minato often created clones to handle emergencies. If necessary, he would personally go to the location and return as soon as possible, usually being gone for only a few minutes.
Minato managed to arrive in time to save Nawaki, but the situation was critical—he found him missing an arm. Instead of just rescuing the survivor, Minato quickly eliminated all the enemies present using his Akuma no Mi. He stored the bodies in a scroll, realizing that these ninjas didn’t belong to Suna Village.
He then instructed the survivor to issue a detailed report on the incident, stating that the ninjas had escaped and were not captured by Minato. After that, Minato sent Nawaki to the medical camp at the center of the border, leaving him with some ninjas, and returned to his own camp—after all, he had things to do.
Days later, Tsuna learned of the incident from her mother and made a point to personally thank Minato for saving her uncle. She found him during one of his visits to the medical camp, something he did regularly. These visits to the medical sector were frequent, occurring two or three times a week. Occasionally, Minato would even slip away for a few hours to relax on the southern beach, seeking some relief amidst the chaos of the war.
He often did this with Mikoto, and sometimes he took Hanabi out of the camp for moments of rest. However, he maintained a good relationship with all of them, even though Hanabi was not his fiancée.
His haki training in the little time he had was intense, as his schedule allowed for very few breaks. He put more effort than ever into it, and his progress in mastering Armament Haki was beginning to show. The haki was flowing, growing stronger, and stabilizing. Minato knew that by the end of the war, or shortly afterward, he would have mastered the first stage of haki, enabling him to coat his body with a dark layer. He also understood that a third ninja war was inevitable, and when that time came, he would be much stronger and would no longer need to hide his power publicly, though he was already beginning to reveal it.
“When that happens, will I still be recognized as the ‘Yellow Flash’?” he wondered, imagining how the ninja world would handle a shinobi who was entirely made of light.
The war itself wasn’t far from its end. In less than a year, it would be over. Of course, the fighting continued, and Minato personally faced many battles.
Regarding his camp, the Stone Village had started to avoid direct confrontations due to the possibility of Minato appearing in the middle of the conflicts. The enemies already knew that all of Minato’s teams carried marked kunai, allowing him to teleport and send signals quickly. This made operations against Konoha extremely difficult.
The Stone Village had to send powerful ninjas, at least at the level of Jinchūriki, to confront the Konoha teams from Minato’s camp. Even then, they began diverting their efforts to attack other camps farther south, avoiding any direct confrontation with Minato and his squad.
Elsewhere, Konoha’s eastern border suddenly gained an advantage, especially as the Uzumaki clan began to conquer more and more territory. Even while fighting against the Seven Swordsmen, two Jinchūriki, and a Kage, the Uzumaki became so efficient that they were eventually sent north, where they helped Orochimaru completely regain control of the situation.
The Raikage had returned, now bearing a prominent scar left by Minato that he would carry for the rest of his life, yet still facing pressure even without Minato or Sakumo on that front.
“I can’t wait to return to Konoha…” Minato muttered as he closed the last scroll of the night. Rising from his chair, he began to leave.
“Leaving already, Commander?” a guard asked as he passed.
“It’s still early,” another joked with a grin.
Minato gave a faint smile. “I need to sleep… or you’ll be without a commander tomorrow,” he replied, prompting a small chuckle from them. With that, he left the main tent, which was always guarded in shifts due to the important documents Minato signed and reviewed.
Entering his own tent, he found Mikoto asleep on the bed, with a plate of food left by her. He sighed, sat down, and ate before lying down to rest, knowing he would resume his demanding routine the next day.
