[What do you think I am, Evan?]

“Terror Repellent.”

Kayla simply rolled her eyes and pushed Evan’s face away, breaking free from the hug.

Then, Evan asked, “Where have you been?”

Kayla shot him a glare, her golden eyes narrowing.

[Where do you think?

Our so-called ‘allies’ for tomorrow’s plan are a chaotic mix of the Kyrexi’s enemies from different galaxies.

With so many people from completely different backgrounds crammed together, conflicts were bound to break out and someone had to keep them in line.

Since you were busy having late-night talks with two of them—] she gestured at Artemisia and Beatrix— [I had to handle it.]

Hearing this, Evan’s eyes lit up and he broke into a smile.

“Thanks, Kayla. Everybody needs a Kayla.”

He tried to hug her again, only for her to push his face away once more. Without sparing him a glance, Kayla turned to Artemisia and asked.

[Are you sure you should be here? That little girl, Aphine, nearly started a fight with those lunatics from the Blood Moon Sect.

You should probably go deal with that.]

Artemisia sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose. Her weary expression made Beatrix laugh—she knew Aphine’s personality all too well.

“Let’s go, Mallory,” Beatrix said as she stood, activating her authority over space to teleport them away.

“See you tomorrow, Evan. Bye, Aunt Kayla.”

With that, she and Artemisia vanished, leaving only Evan and Kayla by the lake.

Now alone with Evan, Kayla glanced at the stools Artemisia and Beatrix had left behind. She took a seat on one, only for Evan to reach over and pull it closer before leaning against her shoulder.

Looking down at the top of his head, she asked.

[Why are you being so clingy today?]

Evan let out a content sigh.

[Well, you do realize you’re very huggable, Kayla. Like a doll. It’s calming.]

Kayla didn’t even respond and just shook her head with an exasperated sigh. But despite this, she made no effort to push him away.

She understood Evan had been through a lot these past few days.

From the shattered remains of armour behind them, she could tell he had just finished his battle with the Machine god King, one of the Kyrexi’s major allies.

She knew all too well how strong that entity was. So, instead of pulling away, she reached up and patted his head—a small gesture of acknowledgement.

[Good job.]

Evan said nothing, only closing his eyes briefly as she ran her fingers through his hair.

Then, Kayla tilted her head back, gazing up at the stars.

[Do you really trust them that much?] she asked. [You told them about your past—the past you didn’t even tell me.]

By ‘them’, she was referring to Artemisia and Beatrix, and her words revealed that despite how close she and Evan were, Kayla didn’t know the full truth of Evan’s origins.

She knew he had destroyed his home world, killing everyone on and from it besides himself.

But what that world was, and the circumstances that led to its destruction—those details had never reached her ears.

Evan’s eyes opened and he turned to face her.

“Wait a second… are you jealous?”

Kayla’s head snapped toward him, an incredulous expression on her face.

[What the hell do you mean, jealous? Why would I be jealous?]

Slowly, Evan’s lips curled upward.

“Oh my god,” he murmured. “Our dear Kayla is jealous.”

Kayla’s eye twitched.

[I am NOT jealous.]

She put a great deal of emphasis on that NOT, but that just made Evan’s grin widen.

“Ah, the classic hallmark of a jealous person—insisting that they’re definitely not jealous.”

He raised his hand and patted her head in mock reassurance. “Don’t worry, Kayla. I believe you. You’re not jealous.”

The glint in his eyes said otherwise, and that only made Kayla even more irritated. But before Kayla could snap, Evan’s voice suddenly changed tone.

“Don’t worry about them. Artemisia and Beatrix can’t betray me even if they wanted to.”

Pointing over his shoulder, at the shattered armour on the ground, he continued.

“It’s obvious that I’m far stronger than they are. Even if they pooled all their current forces together, it wouldn’t make a difference.”

There was no arrogance in his words—just pure confidence. And for good reason.

The current Evan was stronger than Artemisia and Beatrix combined, not just in terms of raw power but in universal influence, connections, and sheer experience.

He had been a mercenary for 3,000+ years—long enough to forge countless ties across the universe.

The influence he had helped the Kyrexi gain wasn’t theirs alone; a good portion of it belonged to him. After all, he was the one doing the dirty work.

Betrayal? They’d have to be insane to consider it.

“Besides,” Evan continued, “they need my help. They plan to take advantage of tomorrow’s chaos—the power vacuum left behind by the Kyrexi—to form their own faction.”

Kayla’s brow arched slightly.

[A faction?]

Evan nodded.

“Yeah. They’re calling it the ‘New gods’.”

Kayla thought for a moment, then her eyes narrowed in understanding.

[…Is this a younger generation type of faction?]

“Yep.”

Kayla shook her head at his response.

[That’s going to be very difficult. Craig’s not going to like that.]

The name she called was that of the god Emperor. An existence that was already at odds with Artemisia and Beatrix’s parents, the Supreme god King and Queen.

Even more so, Evan and Kayla were sure the man had ties to the Kyrexi.

“If they gave up just because something was difficult, they wouldn’t survive long in this fucked-up universe.”

When Evan put it that way, Kayla understood.

Artemisia and Beatrix had worked hard over their nearly 4,000 years of life.

While they weren’t on the level of absolute monsters like Alvey Sargon, they were still among the most powerful and talented members of the younger generation.

If ranked, they would sit comfortably in fourth and fifth place.

For reference; Third place would be McEnda III, Alvey would be Second, and First?

Evan.

It was easy to forget sometimes, but despite being powerful enough to kill hundred-thousand-year-old monsters like the Machine god King, Evan was 99 years younger than Artemisia and Beatrix.

Continuing his explanation, Evan spoke.

“Lastly, while I don’t have the specifics, it seems that the future me—who, for some reason, was a child and went back in time and met their teenage selves— played a vital role in their survival of a past Nexus event.

Not just that, but also in them acquiring some powerful abilities… details of which they refused to disclose.”

Kayla’s ears perked at the mention of a ‘Nexus Event’. She thought for a moment before nodding.

[Ah, I think I know which one. It has to be Cruotis Prime’s Apocalypse.]

Evan tilted his head in question.

“Isn’t that the Prime World that was destroyed by Demon King Westley?”

[Yes,] Kayla confirmed. [Demon King Westley, Progenitor godslayer Arthur, and the Masked Rogue Hero Evan. YOU.]

Evan exhaled, leaning back slightly.

“Honestly, I still don’t understand how I somehow regressed to a child in the future, but… oh well, things happen.”

Kayla sighed as well.

[It’s incomprehensible to me, too. Just like how, for some reason, we were contracted in the future.]

Hearing this, Evan blinked in surprise.

“We were?”

Kayla nodded, but Evan still couldn’t believe it.

“You, of all people. The only spirit I’ve ever seen who has never once formed a contract with anyone, despite how advantageous it could be to you.”

[I have no idea why the future me did that either,] Kayla admitted. [What matters is that it happened.]

Seeming to finally believe it was true, Evan’s lips curled up.

“Maybe we got close enough that you finally let me into your heart.”

Kayla rolled her eyes at him. [Yeah, right.]

Evan smiled wryly at her reaction, then eyed her curiously.

“You met this future me—the one who was a kid too, didn’t you?”

Kayla gave a short nod.

“And?” Evan pressed. “Were you guys close?”

[We only met once. And I remember leaving that conversation with more questions than I started with.]

This response made Evan chuckle lightly.

“Yeah, that definitely sounds like me.”

After he spoke, they sat there in silence for a while, gazing at the rippling lake under the night sky. Then Evan finally spoke.

“Hey, Kayla.”

[Yeah?]

“Tomorrow… I want you to promise me something.”

She glanced at him.

[What?]

“No matter what happens, don’t release your seal.”

Kayla frowned.

[Come on, Evan. That’s a FLAG. You’re the one who usually tells me that.]

Evan let out a light chuckle—a humourless one this time.

“I’m serious, Kayla. Please don’t. Even if… I don’t know… even if I end up having to use VIOLET.”

The moment those words left his mouth, Kayla’s expression darkened. She turned sharply, grabbing Evan by the collar and pulling him close, her eyes glowing intensely.

[Evan, don’t you dare even think about it.]

Whatever VIOLET was, it was enough to set Kayla off completely, her entire mood shifting in an instant.

Evan met Kayla’s intense gaze without flinching, his words calm as the lake before them.

“It’s a possibility I have to consider if I’m going up against the Kyrexi.”

Kayla’s eyes narrowed.

[Evan, you are not using VIOLET. No matter what happens.]

“And you’re not releasing your seal. No matter what happens.”

Silence.

Evan studied Kayla’s expression, then let out a quiet breath.

“You can’t promise me that, can you?”

Kayla didn’t answer. She couldn’t.

“Then it’s the same for me. I can’t promise you I wouldn’t use Violet if it came down to it, despite knowing the risk to my existence.

My goal is to bring an end to the Kyrexi. I’ll do whatever it takes to kill every single one of them. That’s why I went to the effort of making friends with those dragonslayers, despite our previous conflict, and getting that thing from them.

I’ll try to avoid using it, but if it comes down to it…I wouldn’t hesitate.”

Kayla remained silent for some seconds, before finally speaking, her voice quieter this time.

[Evan… you need to sleep. Get some rest.]

She stood up, and in the next moment, she vanished.

Left behind, Evan laughed under his breath, shaking his head.

“Really, Kayla? I don’t even know why you’re jealous. You’re clearly the one I trust the most. After all, you’re the only one I’ve ever told what Mesarthim’s VIOLET actually does.”

The final flame of his prismatic seven-coloured fire—Mesarthim. The Violet flame.

No one had ever seen Evan use it. No one knew what it did. But he and Kayla were close enough that he had told her.

Of course, it was because of the situation at the time. But still—he would have told her anyway.

‘Funny how we got this close in mere decades…’

Evan let out another slow breath before standing, stretching his arms.

“I don’t feel like I can sleep without a little bit of training.”

Fighting. Training. Sleeping.

That cycle had defined his life for so long that it was second nature. If he broke it, he felt uncomfortable.

Holding up a hand, he summoned a swirl of indigo flames, watching as they coalesced and solidified into a sword in his grip.

“Let’s do some practice swings before bed.”

With that, he swung the sword.

The blade tore through the air—

—And sliced clean through the neck of a god.

Golden blood sprayed in an arc, but Evan ignored it, looking at the scene around him.

This wasn’t the tranquil flower bed of the night before. This was a battlefield.

Explosions rocked the sky. Spaceships burned through the atmosphere, colliding and crashing. One of the many moons in the sky exploded, its fragments raining fire onto the planet below.

Blood of all colours stained the ground, bodies fell in every direction, and the battle raged on.

Evan flicked the blood from his sword, then, he lifted his head.

Before him, eight figures hovered in the air, each one radiating a suffocating amount of magic power and divinity.

The god Kings of the Kyrexi.

A slow smile spread across Evan’s face as he opened his arms.

|Kyrexi! Your loyal servant has returned—and I bring you the flames of death.|
