Chapter 1044 - 1044: A Futile Inquiry
She hadn’t been a Spirit originally. She was the consciousness of the Orithyia Galaxy’s life support contingency—the Star of Lightning.
Eventually, she managed to sever her link to the SOL and took over the body of a dying Spirit. By absorbing that Spirit’s soul, she gained ‘Spirit Race Factors’.
This was how Kaylatheurge became a Spirit.
But in the end, she wasn’t a ‘pure’ Spirit, so while she inherited some of the race’s advantages, she didn’t inherit all the drawbacks—one of which was their below-average-growth rate.
The body she took over originally belonged to a Senior Spirit Lord, and all that power transferred to Kaylatheurge, who then built on that strong foundation and advanced it to her current level as a Spirit Empress.
She had grown powerful enough that Spirit Contracts became completely unnecessary. Whatever benefits those contracts offered, she didn’t need them.
That’s why she’d been so certain she’d never have to form one with anyone, under any circumstances.
Now, she was being told that she had contracted with some kid from the future, and worse, had seen proof of it trying to reconnect with her.
She didn’t need long to figure out a possible reason.
The most logical explanation was that she had lost her power in the future. Enough to force her into a situation where she needed a contract to recover.
The ‘fear’ Evan suspected she was feeling likely stemmed from the question of what could have possibly caused her to lose that level of power in the first place.
This was why she wanted to know what led to it, so she could avoid it before it ever happened.
Taking a deep breath to calm herself, Kaylatheurge went ahead and began asking her questions anyway.
“Can you describe the circumstances of our first meeting?”
“You turned into a slime and followed me home after I unsealed a High-Rank Demon from a dungeon.”
“””…what?”””
This time, Arthur and Jamie were just as dumbfounded as she was. They both turned to Evan with raised brows, their expressions asking Really? and Evan just shrugged.
“What? It’s the truth. Want me to swear an Oath of Mana or something?”
He wasn’t making it up. That really was how he met Kayla in the future.
“…why a slime?”
“That’s something you never explained. Honestly, we both kinda forgot about it, and I wouldn’t have remembered if you hadn’t brought it up just now.”
Evan was about to shrug again, but suddenly froze, his eyes widening as a thought struck him.
“Wait a second… what if this conversation is the reason? What if you transformed into a slime because I told you that you would, so you did it? Oh crap, I’ve just created a paradox!”
Arthur blinked, then gave a slow nod. “You actually might have.”
Kaylatheurge frowned silently, and seeing this expression, Evan shook his head and spoke.
“Yeah, I know. You’re probably thinking you should make a point NOT to do it now. But I’m telling you, you’re still gonna end up doing it. We meet again ten thousand years in the future—you sure as hell wouldn’t remember this chat.”
Evan kinda had a point. And judging by how Kaylatheurge’s brows furrowed even more, she knew it too.
But just because he had a point didn’t mean he was right. The truth was, that Kayla remembered every single bit of this conversation.
Unaware of this, Evan kept talking, and his next words only served to confuse Kaylatheurge even more.
“Oh, and that was actually our Second-First Meeting. The First-First one was apparently quite different, you see?”
“The fuck do you mean, ‘Second-First meeting’?” Arthur cut in, giving Evan a deadpan look.
Evan shrugged and replied, a bit defensive now. “What? It’s true.”
Then, before anyone could argue, he explained further.
“Look, we met once. Then I lost my memories. Then we met again, which became our new first meeting.
Both meetings were under completely different circumstances.”
“…and what were the circumstances of the first?”
Kaylatheurge asked right after he finished, but Evan’s answer made her brow twitch.
“No clue.”
“…”
“Hey, don’t look at me like you want to beat me up. I genuinely don’t know. Or more accurately, I don’t have the memory. Someone gave me a rundown, but they left out names and specifics.
So while I think that was our First-First meeting, I have no definitive proof.”
Evan paused for a moment, only to continue before anyone could respond.
“Anyway, truth be told, I didn’t even realize our Second-First meeting wasn’t actually our First-First meeting until a couple of years after the Second-First meeting.
I only found out because of some guy you knew back in the day. He tried to mess with me, and that’s how I learned what I thought was our first meeting was actually the Second-First one. The real first happened years earlier, but I didn’t know, because I lost my memories.
I wanted to get more info, but I couldn’t. Mostly because I kinda killed the guy a few minutes later.
Then, we found out it wasn’t really him. But when we ran into the real one an hour later, you killed him on sight.
Just—bam! Ripped his heart out. He must’ve pissed you off that bad, huh? But yeah, that’s about it.”
Then, turning to Kaylatheurge with a raised brow, Evan asked, “You confused yet?”
Without waiting for a reply, he added, “Don’t worry, it gets worse.”
And just like that, he launched into part two.
“So you see, a god Queen showed up and then—”
“Just stop,” Kaylatheurge cut him off, fingers pinching her temple as she let out a tired sigh.
At this point, she had given up on getting any useful information from Evan today.
“Huh? You don’t wanna hear the rest of the story?” Evan blinked at her, confused by the sudden shutdown.
“Really, dude? The rest of the story?” Arthur chimed in with a skeptical look.
“Yeah, the rest,” Evan replied with a casual nod.
Leaning back, he added with a shrug, “It’s not like I’ve lied about anything though.”
And he hadn’t. Every word he said was, in fact, true.
The thing was, while Evan’s words were technically true, they made little to no sense to anyone who didn’t have the full context of his life and everything that had happened over the past few years.
At this point, Jamie, who had been silent all this while, finally spoke up.
“Alright, it’s time to stop messing around, Evan.”
“I wasn’t,” Evan replied.
“You really weren’t?”
Evan paused for a second, then admitted, “Okay, maybe I said things in a confusing way just for fun—but the content was still the truth.”
“Same difference,” Jamie shot back.
Right then, Kaylatheurge abruptly stood up, an exasperated sigh escaping her lips as she spoke.
“I’m out of here.”
Jamie had already released the spatial constraints around her long ago, so she could’ve left at any time. The only reason she’d remained was her failed attempt to get answers out of Evan.
Without another word, her body turned transparent, then completely vanished—an instant shift into her spiritual body, followed by immediate teleportation.
And just like Evan had said… she left with more questions than answers.
As for the three protagonists, they’d wrapped up their business in the RVE, and with the Realm Lord absent, Jamie’s original plan couldn’t be carried out.
Thus, they decided to leave.
“I’ve got another planet to check out, so why don’t you guys hang with Artemisia and Beatrix on Aidos till I’m done?”
Jamie’s suggestion was met with deadpan stares from both boys.
“Excuse me? Why would I want to stay in a god King’s backyard any longer than I have to?”
“Dude, did you not just see Causality try to blind me?”
Their responses came back-to-back, but Jamie just chuckled before activating his Authority and conjuring a gate that would return them to Aramis.
“Since my original plan flopped because Revi wasn’t around, I’ll go check out another world.”
Rubbing his chin, he muttered to himself, “Maybe I’ll check out Chang’s domain… they usually open up those secret realms around this time of year.”
With that, the trio split up—Jamie heading off to investigate this ‘Chang’ person’s domain, while Arthur and Evan returned to Aramis.
From there, they set off on a short trip to the continent of Zefesh.
It was Evan’s first time setting foot there, but judging from the way the Demon Generals treated Arthur with a mix of respect and fear, it was clear Arthur had been there before… and had left quite the impression.
When he asked what Arthur had done, the silver-haired teen simply laughed and told him he was better off not knowing.
Unfortunately, that warning turned out to be useless.
While they were en route to rendezvous with a military division handling Aramisian Resistance forces, they stumbled upon the aftermath of Arthur’s handiwork.
As Evan just stared at the scene in shock, Arthur muttered something about having done that—creating a massive canyon in the continent’s centre, where the fabric of space itself was warped by dense Destruction law energy potent enough to instantly kill anything below Level 700—using an artifact.
And now, he intended to recreate that feat using only his own power.
Naturally, the spectacle of such an attempt drew the attention of nearby Aramisian forces, and it didn’t take long for the pair to be identified as the notorious Silver Demon Summoner and his Aide.
What followed was an all-out battle against multiple Sovereigns, with the situation escalating rapidly, spiralling completely out of control, and culminating in Arthur and Evan having to completely delete an entire Aramisian military city from the map.
By the end of that mess, Evan had hit Level 777.
