Chapter 789 - 789: Midnight Musings
Oak Avenue Manor
Bourne Estate
Gerfast
November 23rd
Year 1054
The party in the castle wasn’t yet over, but Evan and Eliza felt they had enough so they left and returned home.
They were welcomed by the Head Servants whom Evan had dismissed for the night right after, leaving the large Manor with only two occupants.
Eliza didn’t mind, as she liked being alone with Evan like this sometimes.
She took off the dress she had worn for the night, and right before she walked over to her wardrobe to pick up house clothes, she spotted one of Evan’s large T-shirts lying on a couch nearby so she picked that up instead.
With a random pair of shorts serving as bottoms, she headed down to the kitchen where Evan was busy putting in the carton of strawberries he bought earlier into the fridge.
He was also restocking the mobile fridge he carried around in his inventory with more wines and the sheer number of strawberry wines she saw in the pantry made her sigh.
‘It’s more than an addiction at this point.’
She moved over to the counter and sat atop it, her thoughts shifting to what she could make for herself as a late-night snack.
Though she had eaten a bit during the party, the little amount of food she took wasn’t enough to sate a foodie like her so she wanted to make something else.
“Hey, Evan. Where’re Roselia and the rest?”
“Milena said something about Roselia gambling for books while Nadarus is stealing people’s money.”
“Oh, so the usual.”
During Roselia’s free time, it was very easy to figure out where the High Demon was. Just find the nearest library or the biggest bookstore in the area and there was a 90% chance she was there.
The remaining 10% chance was that she was in Nadarus’ casino, helping him legally steal people’s money.
Speaking of Money, it should be noted that in Evan’s party—The Anomalies—Nadarus was by far the richest.
Evan had enough money to comfortably call himself a multi-millionaire, but Nadarus…he was a billionaire.
He’d gotten that rich in only a few years, and this wasn’t counting the billions more he had stashed away in his subspace that he had not recovered.
For someone like him who had the ‘Power of Wealth’ skill, making his wealth directly translate into a Power Boost, having Billions was enough to make him fight people close to 100 levels above him for a short time.
Naturally, there was a cap on how much power he could get with it, so as not to break the balance and have issues with Causality.
Such thoughts went through Evan’s mind as he watched Eliza move around the kitchen while whipping up her not-so-little snack.
The aroma of roasting chicken mingled with the rich scent of a creamy mushroom soup, while the sound of vegetables sizzling in a pan added comforting background noise.
Evan’s rested his head on the kitchen counter, his eyes following Eliza’s every move.
The young woman’s movements looked so precise and fluid, a testament to her familiarity with the kitchen. It reminded him of their little ‘cooking contests’ of which Evan always took first…from the bottom.
Her golden-blonde hair was tied back in a loose bun, a few stray strands framing her face as she concentrated on her task.
Despite the constant threats and enemy plans that he had to deal with, moments like this offered a rare respite for Evan.
He also admired the way Eliza found joy in such ordinary things, evidenced by the smile on her face as she hummed a tune.
“Need any help?”
Evan asked, his voice breaking the comfortable silence. Eliza glanced over her shoulder and around the kitchen before replying.
“I think I’ve got it under control, but thanks for the offer. You could set the table if you’d like.”
The boy nodded and moved to lay out the plates and cutlery, mere moments before Eliza placed a large platter of fried kitchen in the centre of the kitchen table.
It was followed by a pot of creamy soup, a bowl of mixed vegetables sautéed to perfection, and a loaf of warm, freshly baked bread.
“Looks delicious.”
Evan remarked, pulling out a chair for Eliza before taking a seat himself.
“It’s nothing fancy though?”
Eliza’s reply made it clear she considered this to be nothing more than a little late-night snack and Evan couldn’t help but chuckle at this.
As they began to eat, the conversation flowed naturally, touching on everything from mundane daily activities to the latest developments in their ongoing intrigues.
“So…”
Eliza spoke between bites.
“What’s your next move with Count Rami and Viscount Brewer? You’ve clearly got something planned.”
Evan paused, remembering that Eliza was the one to decide where he sent the Countess for a ‘vacation’ before replying.
“Let’s just say, by the time they realize what’s happened, it will be too late for them to do anything about it.”
The boy had set things up so he’d be the one with the most benefit in the situation so he wasn’t too bothered. Seeing his nonchalant demeanour, Eliza sighed but nodded in understanding.
“Just don’t get caught up in something you can’t handle.”
“I wouldn’t.”
“If you say so.”
Eliza quickly dropped the topic as she had something more important to ask Evan. It was regarding the next trip the two had planned. Evan had asked her about where they wanted to go after they were done in Tarse and she had finally gotten her answer.
“I’ve always wanted you to see the Southern Lights from Vathax. Due to our lack of light pollution, one can get a pretty nice view despite how far we are from the South Pole.”
She twirled her fork after she spoke, her eyes sparkling with excitement and Evan smiled as he wiped his mouth with a napkin.
“Sounds incredible.
I did have the floating islands of Lyria in the Aethereal Sea on my mind.”
It was a truly fantastical scene that Evan had wanted to see just as much as he wanted to see the Regal Void Expanse’s starry sky.
“The idea of soaring from one island to another with waterfalls cascading into the sky…it’s dreamlike.”
Eliza chuckled at the sight of Evan gesturing animatedly with his hand, mimicking the motions of the islands drifting.
“I’ve heard the flora there glows with bioluminescence at night and creates a landscape of twinkling lights. Must be magical to see.”
She leaned back in her chair as she nodded, while Evan reached for a piece of bread and revealed his ulterior motive for wanting to go there.
“Yeah. And they’ve got skywhales that drift between the islands. Riding one feels like ‘riding a cloud’ apparently.
But rather than ride them, I wanna eat them.”
“…really, Evan?”
Eliza deadpanned him and Evan barely held back his laughter, setting down his fork as he nodded.
“Yes, I really wanna eat a skywhale.”
After a moment of silence, Eliza shook her head and declared they weren’t going to the Floating Islands anymore.
“Huh? Why?”
“So skywhales don’t go extinct, that’s why!”
Her reply made Evan unable to contain his laughter any longer, and he burst out, clutching his stomach.
“We’re not going to the Floating Islands. Period.
We can go to the Crystal Caverns in Eldoria. The cavern system there is made of giant mana crystals and each one is attuned to a different element.”
Evan recalled information about the place she called, remembering from the game that it was stated that there were Law Crystals in that location.
“I’ve heard about those. Those Caverns are guarded by High Rank Spirits. Even the Spirit King occasionally goes there.”
“Spirit King Sinclair? It’s that important of a place?”
“Yep.”
Hearing about the Spirit King’s potential presence, Eliza nodded in affirmation. She pointed her fork at Evan and spoke.
“Good. Then it means you wouldn’t eat any rare creatures there.”
Clearly, she wasn’t gonna let the talk of ‘eating skywhales’ go easily.
Evan just chuckled lightly as he moved to tackle the fried chicken Eliza had made. The kitchen descended into a comfortable silence, with the only noise being the sound of their cutlery.
When their meal was done and Eliza put the plates into the sink, Evan switched on a nearby radio and found a station playing some calm classical music.
Eliza filled her glass with water and was taking a sip when Evan, still holding the radio, spoke up.
“Hey, Liz.”
“Yeah?”
The young woman raised a brow, wondering what he wanted to speak about, and with the calmest and most casual tone she had ever heard Evan speak with, he proceeded to ask her the one question she would never have expected at this juncture in a million years.
“Why don’t we get married?”
“Pfft!—cough! cough cough!!”
