Chapter 816 - 816: Envy and Yearning
Evan’s gamble had paid off.
He’d always had an inkling that EOTD could sense whenever he used BoD, and that’s why he activated it.
Normally, the man wouldn’t have cared as Evan used the skill a lot. But this time, the location the skill activation came from was NOT Aidos.
This location change is what got him curious and made him turn his gaze in Evan’s direction.
“Thanks for the help, bro.”
Evan spoke up, a moment before something crashed into him and tackled him to the ground.
Looking up, he saw a very worried Kayla patting his body down as if trying to check for any wounds.
The gaze of EOTD vanished silently, and the boy smiled wryly before raising his hands to placate the worried spirit in front of him.
He lightly hugged her and got to his feet, easily lifting her and setting her down on the ground.
“Hold on for a second.”
Evan quickly opened his inventory and brought out his communicators to contact everyone else and find out how things went on their end.
Just like he expected, not all the FCDs were in the correct locations. It seems Roselia, Nadarus and Eliza were fine, but Laurene and David had hiccups.
The Holy Knights and Paladins were able to respond quickly to the undead, but there were a few cities where their response wasn’t fast enough and some casualties had been sustained by the time the soldiers Emperor Lloris sent got there.
Evan told everyone to regroup at Naxetus, before turning towards Kayla as he tossed the communicators into his inventory. He sat down on a random pile of flat stones, looked her right in the eye and spoke.
“Alright, start from the top.”
[…top?]
With all that had happened, there was no way Evan didn’t have questions. It was going to take a while for everyone to regroup, and Evan could get to Naxetus in less than 5 minutes so he could afford to spend some time on Kayla.
‘I’d rather get this done sooner than later.’
With that thought, he crossed his arms in front of his chest and spoke.
“I’m not too concerned about the specifics of your interstellar adventures. What I want to understand are the basics of what you are and why you’re in this world.
Tell me as much as you can without triggering the seal.”
[…]
Kayla clearly did not want to talk, but one look at Evan was all she needed to know that he wasn’t going to accept her silence.
She took a few seconds to sort out her story in her head, before sighing as she began.
◇ ◇ ◇
Star of Lightning.
An ancient Yellow Giant as old as the Orithyia Galaxy. No one alive knew how old it was, not even its consciousness!
All she knew was that she had been in existence for a few billion sets of 365 24-hour days—standard interstellar calendar.
Just like its name, this star was not a giant ball of burning hot gas and plasma, but lightning.
Not all stars possessed consciousnesses, as they didn’t need such things. The only exceptions were special stars–an infinitesimal few even when compared to the vast expanse of stars in existence.
It went without saying that a star made of lightning was definitely special.
It had such powerful gravity that it had other stars orbiting it, and every single one of its satellite stars served as suns for star systems with at least 10 planets.
Ever since gaining consciousness, it could perceive everything happening within its gravitational field, these Satellite Star Systems included.
The Star witnessed how the beings of one planet gained enough power to wage interstellar wars and conquered all the planets in their system, before leaving their system to begin conquering other systems nearby.
To the Star, it wasn’t the first time this had happened, so it wasn’t surprising. Rather, it was envious of these beings who had the ‘freedom’ to leave their home planet and do as they wished across space.
Bound to orbit the galaxy’s centre, the star did not have this freedom.
This festering envy built up over countless years and the Star eventually began seeking ways to gain ‘freedom’.
It acquired as much knowledge as it could, taking advantage of the Interstellar wars that one planet waged and all the information they brought back from star systems they had subdued light years away.
Unlike Planetary Consciousnesses who could use a certain energy to condense physical incarnations, this star could not do this.
It gained knowledge of Ego Weapons and Artifacts, and how these things were able to gain humanoid transformations if they grew powerful enough.
With this, the star began making attempts, using the ambient energies of laws swirling around it, to try and replicate the same things Ego weapons did.
The Star did not know how long it tried this; all it knew was that millions of attempts all failed.
Eventually, the Star despaired and gave up.
The Interstellar Empire created by that one planet was now in a period of peace, with no new wars waged.
The Star just watched them thrive for thousands of years, and during that time, there was a rebellion and one of the subdued planets fought back.
Its former ruler who had been exiled after losing, returned with an army he had created in a different Realm and retook control over his world, before rallying the other subdued planets to resist the empire.
This began a thousand-year war, one which involved planets from Star Systems thousands of light years from where the star of Lightning existed.
Seeing these beings coming from far away, the star’s envy was reignited and it began its attempts to sever its consciousness from its Yellow Giant form.
In the end, the combination of the various knowledge and doctrines of different planets allowed the Star to devise a means to sever its Karma, Fate, Destiny and Causality from being ‘just a star’ lighting up a portion of the dark expanse of space.
Without hesitation or any tests, the star jumped at this opportunity and it was a success. There were solar storms which wiped out entire star systems with lightning striking planets out of existence but the star did not care, it only wanted to be free!
But when it attained this ‘freedom’, it realised a problem.
The Star was only a ‘Consciousness’.
It did not have a ‘Soul’ in the conventional sense, and without that, it could not gain a ‘body’ to move around and had lost its powerful control over Laws.
Losing control over Laws, meant it was now unable to fight back against the correctional force of the Universe which was soon going to try to force it back.
It had very little time to think of a solution, and it was then that the body of a dying woman floated near it.
An Ancient-Breed Spirit.
In her final moments, this woman perceived the floating consciousness of the Star.
Though it did not realise this, the Star’s consciousness had been projecting its thoughts all around it so anyone who got close enough would have instantly understood its ‘desire for a body’.
Seeing as she was on the verge of death, the woman offered the star her body…but not for free.
It turned out that this Spirit wanted Revenge.
Upon the people who had killed her—the Revolutionaries of the Interstellar Empire surrounding the Star of Lightning.
With the fear of causality bearing down on it, the Star’s Consciousness did not hesitate to agree.
It took her body and absorbed her dead soul into its own…enabling it to finally understand how it could generate its own soul using the woman’s soul as a base.
This Spirit woman was also quite powerful, on the level of a ‘Senior Race Lord’, and having seen thousands of Race Lords over countless years, the Star understood how their powers worked.
It took some time to get used to moving a humanoid body based on the woman’s memories and escaped mere moments before Causality struck.
Causality Enforcers like the one Evan had met came over but they could not find the Star’s Consciousness. A search with a radius spanning lightyears was carried about, but they turned up blank.
Little did they know, that the star actually had not gone too far, and had hidden itself within one of its satellite stars.
This was how the star discovered that by masking itself with the auras of other stars, it could evade causality’s detection.
During the time it spent masking itself in another star, it went through all the memories of the Spirit whose body it had taken and discovered everything about her.
Where she came from, and how she got into conflict with the Revolutionary Army.
She was a Great Spirit from a faraway planet, who simply wanted revenge for her husband and daughter who had been killed by the Leader of the Revolutionary Army when he was in exile.
It turned out that when the star assimilated the woman’s soul, their memories mixed up.
The woman, being a deity with a powerful soul, still had a little consciousness even after death, and when she saw the memories of the Star of Lightning, she sympathized with the star.
With the last of her energy, she left behind a simple gift for the Star, a unique means it could identify itself with.
A Name.
Not ‘Star of Lightning’ like everyone else had arbitrarily called it, but a carefully thought of name.
Kayla; reflecting the Star’s Pure desire to be free.
Theurge; embodying the woman’s wish for the Star to work the miracle of exacting the revenge she was unable to.
Together, they formed the name; Kaylatheurge.
Understanding the Star’s dislike of being forced into roles like fate and causality had tried to do, the woman added that it was up to the Star to accept that name or not.
That was the last vestige of thought the Spirit Left behind before she died and had her soul absorbed by the Star.
After seeing the woman’s final thoughts, the Star set out to join the Revolutionary Army the woman hated so much.
The Star rose through the ranks and proceeded to destroy them from within, wiping out every last member who was involved in the death of the Spirit’s family.
The Empire saw this internal crisis of the Revolutionary Army as a chance to take them out, but the Star, knowing all their tactics and cards was able to turn the tables on them and conquer them instead.
It was then that a new desire was born within the Star.
Having finally achieved its long-desired freedom, the Star was now a blank slate that didn’t know what to do with said freedom.
But the feeling of conquering worlds for the first time gave birth to the desire for conquest.
During the Conquest of the Empire, the Star surpassed the power of a Race Lord and became a Race King.
Well, given it was in a female body, ‘Race Queen’, was more apt.
With all that power at its fingertips, the star set out for other worlds, conquering them and adding more to its interstellar colony.
All was to satisfy this new desire for conquest it had.
Years passed and the Star reached the peak of its current Existence Level, the peak of the Race King Level.
It discovered the existence of a realm of power above that, one which only 4 beings had attained.
The True Peak of Power.
It wanted to attain this realm, but no matter what it did, it could not find a way to get there. Accumulating energy did not work, and comprehending laws did not work.
The Star could not fathom why its power could not go any further.
During this period, the Star had been using the auras of other stars to cloak itself to avoid Causality, never using the same star more than twice.
So, while it was looking for a suitable star, it came across a certain Prime World.
From the memories of the Spirit that it had gotten its body from, the Star realised that this was the Spirit’s Home World.
Aidos.
