Reincarnated Hero System

Chapter 857 - 857: Arthur’s Saga

“Who’s this Dragonkin?”

“He’s gonna be my Watson for today. I was playing around with the law of Fate and I deduced that if I brought him along, it’d make us find the culprit faster.”

“Wait…what?”

Evan’s gaze snapped in Arthur’s direction when he heard those words. He had thought that Arthur had just dragged him along for the fun of it, but it seemed that was not the case.

‘Law of Fate…the same as the “First Finger’s” power. Maybe I should have Arthur teach me how to avoid that thing…’

The First Finger of the Demonic Hand was a skilled Fate Manipulator, and his powers were a real thorn in the side for Evan. Now that he was away from Aidos and with Arthur—someone who comprehended the inner workings of the law of Fate—Evan had the desire to learn a way to avoid it so the First Finger wouldn’t be able to use it against him much.

Even trying to deduce things via his companions who were not Irregulars should be impossible; that’s what Evan was aiming for.

Such thoughts crossed his mind as he watched Arthur casually uncover the corpse and describing the sight he was greeted with the word ‘gruesome’ felt like an understatement.

“This…is disturbing.”

The victim’s tongue had been cut out, and their ribs protruded from their chest. It was also evident that the blood-pumping organ meant to be in their chest was missing, probably removed by the killer.

“Twenty.

A new victim every week. Never on the same day.

Each body has been found in this state.”

The Inspector spoke, responding to a question Arthur asked while Evan was lost in thought and passed him a file, however, Arthur waved him off and retrieved a similar file from his subspace.

“Have you tried psychometry?”

“Yes. Unfortunately, I do not have a Pseudo-Authority so I can only see as far back as a little over an hour, and this body is the earliest we’ve discovered.

Forensics put it at four hours.”

Psychometry, associated with the Law of Knowledge, was the power to perceive the residual information of an object and/or person.

This particular High-Rank Demon had been put in charge since he could use it proficiently and clearly recall details, however, he had a limitation in the form of duration.

“Besides, something is blocking my readings. The Culprit likely knows there’s a psychometric after them and they’ve taken action to deal with the power.”

Evan silently observed the corpse, noticing the residual energy left was enough to put the target at Level 700 at least.

‘Someone that strong got killed off and no one noticed a thing?’

He wondered how the energy fluctuations from their actions had been concealed while Arthur asked about the strength of all the victims so far.

“All within the Level 600 to 750 Range. Upper Low-Ranks and Lower Mid-Ranks.”

Hearing them call Level 700s Mid-Rank Demons, Evan’s brows furrowed slightly, and he shook his head with a sigh.

‘I don’t think I can get used to hearing them call Level 700s ‘Mid-Rank Demons’. To think it was like this 10,000 years ago…’

“What do you think, Evan?”

Arthur’s voice brought Evan out of his reverie, prompting him to glance at the mutilated corpse and offer his two cents.

“I think this killer clearly had it out for this guy. As for the missing Heart, they may have a use. Some sort of Ritual magic or something…”

Evan had seen a lot of movies back on Earth-V where serial killers harvested organs from their victims to use in witchcraft, so he just spoke based on that.

Hearing his analysis, the Inspector nodded in agreement and provided further information.

“That’s what we’ve surmised as well. All of the 20 Victims share a connection.

At one point in time, they were all within Platoon 471 under the Army of a Deceased General.

With the General’s death and the disbandment of his army, they were all scattered to different Units under different Armies.

Besides that, there is no other connection with them.

We believe this is probably some sort of Revenge Killing perpetrated by an Aramisian who has a history with that Platoon.

What we cannot fathom, is how they can sneak around and perpetrate these murders without anyone knowing until hours after.

Furthermore, these guys are soldiers, yet none of the crime scenes show any signs of a fight. It’s like they were all instantly overpowered.”

Evan raised a brow when he heard this, clearly curious about how the killer had managed to isolate all their victims in secluded areas and kill them without anyone noticing until a random civilian stumbled across the corpse and reported it.

“Give me some space.”

It didn’t take up to five seconds after Arthur spoke for all the nearby Military Police Demons to clear out a 50-metre radius around him, allowing the boy to do as he pleased. Even the Inspector also moved back as well.

‘That’s some level of authority.’

Though he doubted Arthur would bother with him, Evan still moved back and slipped in between two Level 700 demons, choosing those who looked the friendliest as his targets for questioning.

He opened his mouth and lightly muttered something that was sure to catch their attention.

“General Arthur seems very respected here…”

“Are you new here or something?”

The demon to his left bit the bait and responded to his mutter, prompting Evan to nod in affirmation.

“Newly assigned as an Aide.”

Evan lied, fabricating a ‘position’ to fit in and the Demon nodded in understanding. Unbeknownst to Evan, the Gozonian Army on Aramis was experiencing a significant influx of reinforcements from their home planet. Earlier in the year, Arthur had proposed a plan to Alvey and McEnda, leading to the arrival of Dark Elves, Dragons, and Vampires to bolster the Gozonian forces.

Given the surge in Dragonkin, it was natural for these demons to assume Evan was one of them, and since he was now purportedly Arthur’s aide, then must definitely be someone powerful for his Existence Level.

“Oh, makes sense you don’t know.

General Vaughn is like a beacon of inspiration for the younger generation. He’s so strong despite only being a teenager.

On his first gig, he took out THE Duskhand City and destroyed one of the Aramisians’ Fake Divine Human factories.”

The mention of Fake Divines reminded Evan of Arthur’s reason for siding with the Demons in the war. He nodded, saying he had heard about that.

“Duskhand City was one of the Aramisians’ strongest Military Cities in the Githal Region, commanded by the Divine Human General Duskhand—a Transcendent.

After being gravely injured in battle against General Sargon, Duskhand and his Transcendent aides retreated deeper into Aramisian territory to heal. Even so, they left behind Sovereign realm existences in Duskhand City, including some Low-Rank gods.

However, General Vaughn infiltrated Duskhand City, spent a week there, and on Friday the 13th, he annihilated the entire inner city!”

Somehow, Evan felt Arthur specifically waited until ‘Friday the 13th’ for this stunt—He wasn’t wrong.

“Inner City?”

“Yeah. Duskhand was split into an Outer and Inner City.

The Outer City had new recruits, civilians, and weak soldiers, but the Inner City? That’s where the Divine Human Factories were. Tens of Thousands of Divine Human Soldiers we didn’t know about were hidden there.

General Vaughn went in alone and wiped everything out in a single night!”

Evan’s reaction to this story was both a mix of surprise and awe. Right after, confusion kicked in as he noticed a discrepancy.

“Wait, General Vaughn is a Level 700+ Legendary, right? How did he beat Level 800s?”

The Demon had said that there were Level 800s in the city, so how was Arthur able to defeat multiple of them? The boy couldn’t be that much of a nonstandard; It wouldn’t even make sense anymore.

Evan’s reply to that question, came from the demoness standing on his right.

“That is because of his special power. General Vaughn probably isn’t a demon like us. I don’t know what race he is, but he has a special power that weakens any gods or Divine Humans within a certain range of him.

I witnessed it on the Triton’s Ark—his power even affected Transcendents!”

Hearing this, Evan quickly attributed this ‘strange power’ to his ‘Slayer Race’ ability. Arthur was also the Progenitor godslayer, so it stood to reason that his own powers would be exceptionally potent.

‘So, with his Slayer abilities, he was able to weaken them and then kill the Level 800s. Even if their raw power was reduced, their skills and experience remained intact—so it’s still an impressive achievement.’

“You know about the Triton’s Ark?”

“I’ve heard of it.”

When Evan gave such a reply, the demoness on his right leaned in with shiny eyes as she recounted another one of Arthur’s feats.

“Would you believe that on a battlefield with hundreds of Transcendents, he was the one who drew first blood from a Divine Human Transcendent?”

“He killed a Transcendent?!”

Evan’s jaws were about to drop when the demoness quickly clarified.

“No, No. It wasn’t a direct kill. General Vaughn is a talented summoner. So skilled, in fact, that he’s earned the title ‘Silver Summoner.’

The Aramisians hate his guts because of how powerful his summons are. During the Triton’s Ark battle, he and Admiral Agriker summoned a giant Hydra and General Vaughn used it to draw first blood.”

Hearing this, Evan internally applauded Arthur for having the gall to stand on the same battlefield with Transcendents.

Each one of those was a walking mass of continental destruction and Arthur was confident enough to get involved in their battle, and even indirectly kill one of them!

‘As for that ‘Admiral Agriker’…Sigesi said he’s the head of the Demon Navy here. His last name is one of those I saw in the ‘Hall of Statues’ as well.’

“What’s more, he got attacked by a Transcendent and was able to hold on long enough for General Sargon to come in and assist.

It wasn’t just any Transcendent but Divine Human General Duskhand.”

“Duskhand? The actual guy?”

Evan asked this after hearing the demoness’ words and she nodded repeatedly.

“He came for revenge but his revenge failed.”

The demoness then glanced at the Inspector, who was making a call on the side, before continuing.

“It’s amazing you know.

Level 900s hold a shit ton of power and despite having a Level in the 700 range, he was able to hold out for nearly 10 minutes.”

The story had been embellished a bit, with some extra minutes added to Arthur’s survival time, but it was true that he had indeed held out against Duskhand far longer than anyone on his level should have.

Hearing this tale, Evan was surprisingly silent. He’d been stunned into silence.

His reaction was delayed; he stood there, speechless, as the enormity of the story sank in. Then a few moments later, he completely computed the sheer scale of what he’d been told.

‘Fight a Transcendent? Survive for 10 minutes?

HOW?!?’

His mind raced, struggling to reconcile the idea of surviving such a fight. Even with his Survival Enhancement Mode and Blessing of Destruction + Limit Break, he couldn’t fathom enduring such a battle.
