“Please stop it, Dad!” a young kid screamed while raising both arms to protect his head. His body curled like a shrimp as a barrage of punches and kicks landed on him.
The kid’s body was already covered in bruises, so the hits just made it even worse.
“Aren’t you acting like a smartass? What do you know? What did you say earlier? Tell me!”
“I just saw the drugs over there. I didn’t do anything. Please stop hitting me.”
“What did you say? You saw what?” The father continued beating the kid.
The kid gritted his teeth and screamed again, “I saw nothing. I didn’t know anything. I’m sorry, Dad. I didn’t know, I didn’t know, I didn’t see anything, I didn’t see anything.”
The child continued to repeat the same words over and over again. His expression was filled with despair, looking at his scary father.
His face was so distorted that there was nothing else but fear reflected on it. Eventually, the beating stopped.
It didn’t happen just once. It happened multiple times. Whenever the father beat the kid, the kid would continue to scream and be scared. Without him realizing it, his heart had already gone numb, and he only did it because his father would cut the beating short whenever he did it like that.

“May I know the purpose of your visit?” The woman asked.
Without wasting any time, Alex Tear unleashed his ena.
The woman took a step back before raising one hand, covering a part of her face with her arm. Her eyes were trembling, and her voice was shaking.
“W-What are you trying to do?”
Soul Devourer suddenly patted Alex’s shoulder. “You…”
The woman’s body was shaking, her voice cracking. “W-What…?”
“We are not bad guys. Who are you?”
“I… I am… Kaelina…”
“Why are you here?”
“I… I work for Lantern and Candle. I’m here because I heard something about a device that can open the sky.”
“Lantern and Candle. I have never heard of them.”
“We are… just a small group, trying to chase a bit more profit…”
Soul Devourer was staring intensely at her as if he was looking deeper than what could be seen.
“What is going on? I haven’t done anything wrong.”
“!!!” Soul Devourer raised his eyebrows. “Why do you think someone has done something wrong?”
“I… I could feel bursts of energy multiple times… There is also a wave of ringing bells that makes me feel weird… I don’t know anything else. I just assume the worst.”
Soul Devourer squinted his eyes. Alex Tear and Fated noticed the change. It was the first time he had taken this long.
However, before it escalated any further, Soul Devourer turned around and said, “We’re leaving.”
The two were confused by his decision, but it looked like Soul Devourer determined this person wasn’t their target.
“Devour.” Alex frowned. “Why are you taking so long? Is there something wrong with that woman?”
“I couldn’t find anything wrong.” Soul Devourer shook his head. “Her reaction is the same as others. Her soul is the same. It looks like she doesn’t know us. I’m just testing her knowledge. Still, I have never heard of the group called Lantern and Candle. Figure out what it’s all about.”
“Are you sure you’re just confused? Maybe you are just mesmerized by her beauty or something? No one will bat an eye if you want to do it.”
“That’s not it. She must be a manager or something. Killing her shouldn’t be that much of a deal if that group is just a small one, but if it’s a made-up one…”
Fated fell silent and opened the map. Her eyes turned blank as her body was enveloped in pink light.
“Lantern and Candle.” Fated muttered.
Her body was shaking for a moment as her forefinger moved instinctively outside the map.
“Hmm? It’s not here?” Soul Devourer raised his eyebrows.
Fated didn’t say anything. Instead, she just flipped the page, which showed the empire’s map. It was only after meeting the empire’s map that she pointed to a certain spot.
“That’s… a count’s territory, right? I don’t remember the name.” Soul Devourer asked.
Fated’s eyes returned to normal. “Yeah. From the looks of it, it’s coming from this place. The headquarters should be somewhere here, but the group certainly exists. It’s not big enough to enter our eyes, but not too small that it won’t come to the dynasty.
“Well, when our group investigated the empire, we heard something about the cloud-repelling device that is said to have the ability to open the sky. The empire is trying to obtain it.
“So, it looks like the woman is not lying. She was probably dispatched here to get this device so that they could profit.”
Soul Devourer looked down, falling into deep thought. “I see. In that case, this woman is not one. Also, that woman’s strength is at the crystal weapon stage. Our target is supposed to be a crystal armor stage summoner.
“And according to our information, his fortune is so high that you should be able to sense it, Fated.”
“Is that so? Well, I don’t sense anything from her. Besides, Alex’s ena should be able to tear apart an illusion, right?”
Alex nodded. “I don’t sense any illusion. She is definitely a woman. Our target is a man. Her body structure is that of a woman. She’s not our target.”
“Then, there are only two rooms left.” Soul Devourer nodded.
“Still, this feels weird. We haven’t found anyone suspicious.” Fated frowned. “My ability might not give you a specific answer, but it should be pretty accurate.”
“Well, we will check all the people here first. We will check the rest later. Also, I want to know whether the Lantern and Candle does exist.”
“Fine. We can head to the empire after this and find out about her information.”
Soul Devourer nodded.
What he didn’t know was that Nathan had combined two ideas: Loki and Thousand Faces. Instead of changing his fate, Nathan approached it in a more absurd way, like the God of Mischief himself.
