Capítulo 431: Chapter 430 Leaving
Lu Qingyan couldn’t shake the feeling that a greater pitfall awaited him if he didn’t find Father Lu.
He had intended to send someone to search, but in that instant, he decided to go himself to see the situation firsthand.
“How long will you be gone?” asked Jiang Nanshu.
Lu Qingyan pondered for several seconds before replying, “If all goes well, three to four days. If not, around a week. I’ll hurry back as soon as I can.”
Jiang Nanshu didn’t try to stop him, wrapping her arms around his waist, “Come back soon.”
Lu Qingyan let out a low chuckle, his chest vibrating with the sound, “Will you miss me?”
Jiang Nanshu yawned, “The baby will miss you.”
“Playing tough,” he huffed lightly, “Alright, time to sleep.”
As she slept in the warm embrace of Lu Qingyan, Jiang Nanshu drifted off into a drowsy slumber.
The next morning, Lu Qingyan’s presence was already missing.
He had sent a message to Jiang Nanshu and then left Beijing.
He should be boarding the plane by now.
Jiang Nanshu sat up in bed to find it was already nine o’clock in the morning.
The nanny had prepared breakfast and softly called for Jiang Nanshu to come eat, then mentioned her return to the Jiang Family.
Jiang Nanshu shook her head, “I don’t need to go back. I can stay here, and besides, my parents live just across the street. It’s fine.”
The nanny thought it made sense. Moving back and forth was troublesome anyway, so she let Jiang Nanshu be.
When Mrs. Ji came to visit, and upon learning that Lu Qingyan had gone abroad for business, she took the opportunity to visit Jiang Nanshu more frequently.
She sat on the sofa, knitting a sweater.
Seeing this, Jiang Nanshu remarked, “Mom, you don’t have to make clothes yourself. I’ll buy them when the time comes.”
Mrs. Ji shot her a glance, “It’s not the same. This is a grandmother’s love, different from what can be bought. I want to do this while I still can. When I’m old and can’t see well, I won’t be able to do it anymore. Besides, I made all your clothes stitch by stitch when you were little. What was yours will be my grandchild’s too. Not sure if it’s a boy or a girl, maybe I should make one of each color—pink and blue.”
Mrs. Ji’s talk stirred Jiang Nanshu’s memories.
The family had been poor in the past, and most of her and her brother Ji Ze’s clothes were made by Mrs. Ji from a piece of cloth and an old sewing machine.
It wasn’t until Jiang Nanshu grew up and became more concerned with looks that Mrs. Ji began buying her pretty dresses.
Watching the movements of Mrs. Ji’s hands, Jiang Nanshu didn’t stop her again. Instead, she sat beside her, watching intently and occasionally asking questions.
Father Ji no longer raised pigs. Sometimes he would go downstairs for a stroll in the community, seeking out the wealthy old men living there to play a game of Chinese chess in the pavilion.
Jiang Nanshu would ask daily about the progress on Lu Qingyan’s end. Sometimes he would reply instantly, other times he was too busy and would take a while to respond. He would video call her in the evenings, asking about her day and reminding her to go to bed early. He never ignored any message from Jiang Nanshu.
A week passed quickly.
Occasionally, Jiang Nanshu would go see Xu Xi, who was in the throes of a new romance that seemed quite sweet and then to see Yan Yidan. Comparatively, things seemed much more serious on her front.
Jiang Nanshu only found out after asking that she had rejected Jiang Yunchuan’s confession.
This did surprise Jiang Nanshu a bit. When she came to Yan Yidan’s office, she was sitting in a leather sofa and asked, “Didn’t you say you were going to be my sister-in-law a few months ago?”
Yan Yidan rubbed her temples, hesitant at the thought of Jiang Yunchuan. From a young age, she had been sent to the mountains to learn and her only focus after coming down was on taking revenge. Once her vengeance was complete, she wanted to manage the Yan Family business properly, to engage in her own pursuits. The matters of marriage had never figured in her plans.
Originally claiming to be Jiang Nanshu’s future sister-in-law was just an attempt to see Jiang Nanshu. At that time, Lu Qingyan was acting like a lunatic, not allowing anyone to see Jiang Nanshu. Only after the Jiang Family sought Old Sir Lu could she barely manage to see Jiang Nanshu. When Lu Qingyan accused her of having no real relation to Jiang Nanshu, in her urgency, she lied, dragging Jiang Yunchuan to back her up. She didn’t expect that the boy would actually take it seriously.
“I…” She chose her words carefully, “I feel that your brother and I are not suitable. I am wholly dedicated to my career, while your brother is of a playful nature. Initially, I practiced racing for the Ke Family’s sake, but after their downfall, I never touched racing again and hardly participate in social activities. I’m not the right fit for him. Maybe he just thinks we’ve been together for a while, that I’m a familiar face who wouldn’t scam him, that’s why he approached me, right?”
As Jiang Nanshu sipped her juice, she nodded in agreement, “It seems like your Fifth Brother was destined to be swindled by a woman, stripped of everything, but not anymore. You wouldn’t be interested in his little company, I suppose.”
Yan Yidan had also heard about Jiang Yunchuan and Lin Yueyue’s affair and couldn’t help but twitch the corner of her mouth, “Then he’s lucky. I have no interest in cheating him. He should just find someone else to marry honestly.”
Jiang Nanshu didn’t make any more comments, but the office door was suddenly flung open, “Is this the reason you’re rejecting me? Because you think I only like you since you wouldn’t scam me? Without even trying, how can you know we’re not suitable? And how do you know that I need you to accompany me in my play to like you? Yan Yidan!”
Jiang Yunchuan’s voice rang out.
Jiang Nanshu quickly turned around to look.
His teeth clenched, his face full of reluctance as he glared at Yan Yidan.
He would not accept this absurd reason.
Yan Yidan’s brows furrowed slightly, “Yun Chuan, calm down. Let’s talk about this later.”
“No, let’s talk right now! I don’t accept your reason.”
The tension between the two was palpable.
Sensibly, Jiang Nanshu stood up to leave, taking her half-finished juice with her, “You two talk, I’ll be going back.”
Jiang Yunchuan stepped aside, letting Jiang Nanshu pass, then closed the door.
What happened inside after that, Jiang Nanshu didn’t know.
Nowadays, her daily pleasure consisted of going to Fang Minghe’s place for advertising shoots, then inquiring about Xu Xi’s romantic experiences, and finally calling Lu Qingyan every night.
But Lu Qingyan had broken his promise; he had said he would return in a week, but as the days passed, a month was quickly drawing to a close. In the last few days, he had completely lost contact. Lu Qingyan had told Jiang Nanshu not to worry about him, that he was going to fetch Father Lu.
Jiang Nanshu looked down at her belly, which at four months was beginning to show some contours.
This time she would have to go for the prenatal checkup alone.
It was the same hospital as before. Jiang Nanshu looked down at her report, which was quite normal.
Suddenly, a little bundle bumped into her foot. Jiang Nanshu took a small step backward to steady herself, looked down, and saw a little girl who had bumped into her. The girl had pigtails and was looking up at her with a fair, cherubic face, her small face filled with guilt as she lisped, “Sorry, Auntie, Youyou didn’t mean to bump into you.”
On the little wrist that was revealed, there was also an intravenous cannula.
This was Su Ran’s daughter.
Before Jiang Nanshu could say anything,
Su Ran immediately ran over, bowing and nodding in apology to Jiang Nanshu, “I’m sorry, the child was just playing too hard, she didn’t mean to bump into you. Are you okay?”
