Chapter 1700: Breakthrough (1)
Chapter 1700: Breakthrough (1)
Sensations slowly returned.
It was nothing initially, but cold and hollow surfaced.
April shivered as these sensations greeted her the second she regained consciousness.
Her entire body was weak; so weak that she couldn’t even lift up her eyelids.
Her life energy was drained; no amount of effort in utilizing her Spiritual Vein produced anything.
She was trapped motionless in the dark.
But inside her core, there’s something else, there’s another presence that seemed to be alive—she could feel its independent movements. Like there was another part inside her that she wasn’t aware of, or was it another creature? She didn’t know.
Slowly, her senses kept coming back.
Now, her hearing ability returned, and she realized the place she was in was noisy.
It was clear that there was a battle nearby.
April could hear grunting and the wet sound that suspiciously sounded like flesh being torn brutally.
’Where am I…?’
She questioned where she was, trying to remember what went down, what had brought her to this state, but the memories were blurry. If she put more effort into remembering the details, her head would ache with a vicious migraine, leaving her in a complete state of confusion.
And then, she heard growls and laughter.
Just hearing the voice alone… It sounded familiar, very familiar, but she couldn’t recall whose it was.
Despite not being able to open her eyes, her eyeballs moved underneath her eyelids.
It wasn’t her intention to see through her eyelids, but the panic that settled in her made her desperate.
’I’m slowly regaining strength, how? I can’t sense life energy around.’
April was exhausted and drained, but she should still be able to sense life energy in the air, which would explain this recovery. But there was none. Only voidal energy dominated the space, and as a Spirit, she couldn’t utilize that energy.
Regardless, her strength was slowly coming back, though the migraine persisted.
Upon opening her eyes, the world was blurry.
Her pupils dilated as she adjusted to the darkness; a few seconds later, the blurriness lessened.
’I’m lying on the ground, but where am I…?’
Even though it was dark, there seemed to be a source of light at the center—a small sphere of light that illuminated the area. She seemed to be inside a dome, and beyond it was writhing darkness. Or at least, she thought it was darkness earlier, but soon realized that it was not the darkness.
Instead, it was a slime-like creature that surrounded the dome.
Some of its tendrils are seeping through the dome, reaching inside with ominous and malicious intent.
Like a hand that wanted nothing more than to devour her.
’Ah… Is that the Immortal Slugs? I remember we were fighting them. Hmm… We?’
April frowned, confused as to why she said that.
As memories began to return, April saw a figure landing not too far from her.
He was big, monstrous even, covered with furs from top to bottom, and even had horns that made him on par in terms of menacing appearance to the scariest voidal monster—she had ever encountered. But she wasn’t scared of him.
Instead, she felt oddly relaxed and assured behind him.
Despite the brutal way this figure adopted as he fought the tendrils, April wasn’t disturbed.
But it was then that her memories returned.
“Rex…” She whispered, extending her weak, trembling hand as if she was trying to reach him.
Hearing this whisper, Rex bit and tore the tendrils apart before he glanced over his shoulder.
His molten lava eyes met with April’s tender eyes.
April saw Rex’s lips curled into an assuring grin before she fell unconscious again.
Her body, mind, and soul were too exhausted to wake up properly.
But she fell unconscious in peace.
She doesn’t need to worry about the situation anymore, as Rex’s grin basically told her that the situation was under control. All she needed to do was close her eyes and rest. As for the Immortal Slugs, leave it to Rex.
Growl!!
Rex continued tearing down the tendrils that seeped through the dome.
It had been nearly a full day since Rex plunged into the depths of the fissure and engaged in a battle of attrition against the Immortal Slugs. Now, with his Minor Law of Misdirection having ascended into a Law of Misdirection, he wasted no time unleashing its newfound power the instant his feet touched the writhing mass of goo.
As he expected, the power of Law was the most effective power against the Immortal Slugs.
And more, the Law of Misdirection was stronger than he expected.
Upon activating it, Rex was able to push the Immortal Slugs’ slimy bodies—and summon a shimmering dome of warped reality around him. A barrier that twisted perception and deflected every attack before it could reach him.
Regardless of how strong the Immortal Slugs’ adaptability was, it fell short.
It couldn’t adapt to the power of Law and could only brute force its way through the distorted dome.
And because of that, Rex was able to keep April safe from the Immortal Slugs’ drainage, while he also simultaneously attacked the Immortal Slugs’ body parts that managed to seep inside and devoured each piece of meat.
He had been immersed in this process fully.
Even though this had been a dire situation earlier, Rex realized that this was an opportunity.
If he utilized this moment correctly, he could grow leaps and bounds.
And that’s the reason for his smile right now.
Not to mention, despite the fatigue from dealing with Haxel’s attempts along the way, along with saving the nobles earlier, suffering immense damage in the process, Rex was still able to continue almost as if his stamina was inexhaustible.
His regeneration allowed his body to keep moving, and his stamina was made for moments like this.
It was his specialty to endure and thrive in prolonged battles like this.
But his mind couldn’t keep up.
Both the toll from the prolonged battle and the excruciating pain each cut produced due to the Gradual Penalty, his mind was wearing down the most. Fortunately, there was a method to keep on going without the need to rest his mind.
And that method was only possible because there are two of him.
Rex had been swapping back and forth between him and the Invincible Apparition.
He let the Invincible Apparition take over while he rested, and vice versa.
It was an extremely effective method.
The Invincible Apparition was the incarnation of his hatred back in his first dark moment, and because of that, it hated the feeling of hopelessness the most—and also loathed the fact that he couldn’t protect the people around him.
Naturally, with that mindset, the Invincible Apparition protected April more ferociously.
So much so that even Rex was surprised.
And earlier, he watched from the inside as the Invincible Apparition laughed and put out his tongue in madness; he could only shake his head. Seems like Kei Xun was telling me the truth. Letting him out is the best way to catch him by surprise. Once the test is nearing its end, I’ll devour him.
<Gather proof that Knight Haxel is the traitor: 1 / 1>
<Chain Sudden Quest 2 of 2 completed!>
<Obtained 100 million gold, Lone Alpha skill, and Lone Beta skill!>
Splash!
Rex laughed aloud as he tore another black tendril.
He opened his chest and flared his claws, glaring at the Immortal Slugs beyond the dome—with absolute madness. He stared at the notifications that came earlier and couldn’t help but be excited. Earlier, his last-ditch attempt to grab Haxel might’ve looked like it ended in failure, but it didn’t.
He wasn’t aiming for Haxel, but rather, his necklace.
As soon as he got the necklace, he placed it into his inventory and completed the Chain Sudden Quest.
…

…
Splash!
Rex was hurled forward suddenly.
He looked down—three tendrils managed to sneak their way from behind and pierced through him.
Each one wasted no time and drained his stamina and life energy rapidly.
Deg!
Rex could hear his heart pounding in his ears.
<Lone Alpha passive skill is active!>
As soon as that notification appeared, there was a boiling sensation that crept from his core—and spread throughout his entire body like lava. Rex immediately took over, pulling the Invincible Apparition back into his mind.
Since it’s a new skill, it’ll be better for him to regulate the sensation.
Looking down, he watched as his furs swayed like he was underwater and began to harden.
Its smooth threads are now turned solid and sharp, almost like his furs turned into natural armor.
His curving horns began to crack and twist, growing longer alongside the swelling of his muscles.
More than that, the three black tendrils that pierced him were suddenly crushed and separated from their main body. Rex was surprised when he saw this, as his regeneration became so vicious that it could even heal his gaping wounds, even when the black tendrils were still inside him.
In hindsight, Rex could feel that he was at least 20% stronger than he was a few seconds ago.
Other than the physical change, there was nothing fancy about the Lone Alpha skill.
But then again, it’s because it didn’t activate fully.
The Lone Alpha passive skill will only activate when he is completely alone, so with Kraken being inside April, it negates the full effect of the passive skill. But even so, this exponential boost in strength—it was still worthy of an Origin-rank skill.
Boom!
Rex grabbed the tendrils in front of him and yanked them forward.
Almost instantly, their bodies were torn from the main body, spewing blood everywhere.
Instead of drenching the ground, the blood was swiftly drawn into a jar beside Rex, while the shredded flesh of the black tendrils was shoved into his mouth. He chewed savagely, savoring the new taste with a dark smile.
Each bite was a reminder that he was growing stronger.
Each bite was a reminder that he was nearing the strength to pave the way out of this hellhole.
But he was in no hurry.
<The Sable Physique acquisition: 33,4% / 100%>
Under the constant barrage of attack from the Immortal Slugs, Rex suffered wounds, but every wound made him sharper and stronger. His body was growing numb, and he became more and more feral, which helped him greatly in absorbing the Matter of Monarch.
Just one day alone pushed the process to 33%.
Before, he was struggling in pain to push the Matter of Monarch to a few percent.
Now, he could keep going and progress in his Sable Physique.
But it was time for him to make the necessary breakthrough that would elevate his power greatly.
Elevate his power to the next level.
Rex glanced at the jar and nodded, “It should be more than enough. Let’s start.”
Swish!
From inside Rex’s chest, a spherical crimson orb appeared and floated before him.
It was the first layer of the Blood Moon Echo that was stuck at 47%.
He had been gathering blood from the voidal monsters he killed, and with the additional blood from the Immortal Slugs, it should be more than enough to complete the first layer of the Blood Moon Echo. In fact, he was confident that it was enough.
“Since you’re not helping me, Kaiser, don’t blame me for stealing more.”
