Chapter 1484 Pay
Chapter 1484 Pay
Atticus clutched Magnus tightly. His arms were trembling.
“T-there has to be another way.”
Magnus gently patted his back.
“There’s no other way.”
“Kiara…”
Atticus turned his desperate eyes to Kiara for help, but she only bowed, tears streaming down her face.
“I leave her in your care.”
Magnus and Kiara stepped in front of him with unwavering resolve. Crimson will flared around Magnus, golden will around Kiara. They sank into a fighting stance as the champions closed in, killing intent pouring over the battlefield.
As Atticus stared at his grandfather’s back, his vision blurred. Something hot trickled down his cheek.
“There has to be another way…”
Was he really about to watch Magnus get killed in front of him?
Was his grandfather really about to… die?
“Another way…”
He muttered it again, voice breaking. He reached for his alternate selves, searching desperately, but there was nothing.
Atticus clenched his katana so tight his arm snapped, the skin tearing as blood burst from the fractures.
‘There’s none.’
“Ha! Finally! We’ve got you trapped!”
“You kept running all over the city. How does it feel, huh? Cornered like the rat you are?”
The champions’ wills churned arrogantly as they glared at Magnus and Kiara.
“We’ll show you what happens when you mess with the Redflames!”
Their wills flared in unison, and they raised their arms. Pure beams of fire gathered in their palms and blasted toward the duo.
“Remember, Atticus.” Magnus glanced back one last time, smiling through the inferno aimed at him. “I will always be proud of the man you’ve become.”
Tears streaked down Atticus’ eyes. ‘I failed.’
“Shields!”
A voice tore through the chaos, followed by the sounds of barriers surrounding them shattering.
Atticus’ eyes turned upwards, where multiple figures clad in radiant golden armor fell from the skies.
They landed before Magnus and Kiara, their will condensing into radiant shields that clashed against the incoming beams.
A thunderous explosion erupted, smoke and churning fire rising into the air.
Atticus’ heart pounded.
‘Who?’
A figure landed before him, and the moment he caught sight of the familiar face, he froze.
“It’s good to see you, Atticus. How have you been?”
“Lazio…”
The resistance member he’d met at the Will Hall upon ascending to the Verge. Despite the clash with the sentinels on Asterra, Atticus could remember he survived.
“What… what are you doing here?”
“Helping an ally of the resistance,” Lazio said with a grin, then turned toward the chaos unfolding around them.
“Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a bunch of red-haired fuckers to kill.”
Lazio immediately began barking command after command, voice booming through the battlefield. Atticus watched in disbelief as more resistance members descended from the sky, slamming into the ground and clashing against the Redflames.
“It’s the resistance! Slaughter them!”
Crimson and gold lit up the city as both sides collided.
But the Redflames had been caught entirely off guard. Their champions fell one after another.
Still, Atticus ignored the chaos and locked onto Magnus as he approached.
“Atticus. I—”
Atticus stepped forward and pulled Magnus into a deep hug.
“It’s fine,” he whispered. “I’m just glad you’re safe.”
Magnus gripped him tighter. Atticus didn’t need words to understand the weight behind the gesture.
After a moment, they separated, and a moment of silence settled between them.
“Ahem.”
Magnus looked away quickly, scratching the back of his head like a shy child.
Atticus could only shake his head. Of all the moments for him to act embarrassed…
He turned as Lazio landed before them.
“The Redflames?” Atticus asked.
“They’re all dead,” Lazio replied, glancing at Magnus before giving him a respectful nod.
“There’ll be time to explain everything later. You need to come with us first. She’s waiting for you.”
‘Anorah.’
The image of a radiant woman appeared in his mind, and Atticus deeply exhaled.
The resistance had just saved his family. There was no reason not to follow them.
Still, his eyes flashed cold.
“One moment.”
Lazio’s eyes sharpened as he felt the sudden spike in temperature. The others might not have felt it, but he was a god.
“Atticus… is everything okay?”
“Yes.” Atticus stepped forward, gaze fixed in a distant direction. “I just need a moment. Hold her.”
He handed the princess to Kiara and slowly sheathed his katana. His will churned violently beneath his skin.
“Step back.”
They obeyed without hesitation, creating distance just as the air around him rippled with heat.
One of his alternate selves had just alerted him. He’d discovered an army of Redflames gathering far away.
‘It’s them.’
Atticus tightened his grip on his katana.
The ones responsible.
The ones who almost took his grandfather from him.
If not for the resistance… Magnus would have…
Atticus’ will boiled, rising like a living flame as he sank into a stance.
He wasn’t going anywhere until they paid.
The distance was unimaginable, but that meant nothing to him.
His eyes blazed.
“Transcendent Slash: Godspeed Grace.”
His will erupted, and Atticus disappeared.
A single crimson flash ripped across the territory, carving a straight line through the world. Trees burst apart as he passed, and the ground split open under the pressure of his speed. Anything caught in his path was reduced to drifting ash before it even hit the ground.
Before him, distance simply ceased to exist.
“He’s coming.”
Emberion lurched from his seat so violently the paniquine beneath him shattered.
“Ark!”
The champions lifting it stumbled back, staring at their viscount in panic.
“Lord Emberion!”
The other viscounts shouted, but Emberion’s eyes were locked on a single direction, narrowing to slits.
‘I have to escape.’
Atticus was crossing the territory at a pace that bordered on insanity, mowing down every Redflame unfortunate to be in his path. ‘My movement will be too slow… the territory perk.’
Emberion reached for his territory. Light started to engulf him, just as a fist smashed into his face. A wave of blistering heat tore through his skull as he was blasted backward, vanishing in a streak of light.
‘W-what…?’
Emberion’s thoughts struggled to form. The distance between the territories was incomprehensible, yet Atticus had crossed that in less than a second!?
Emberion was barely able to peer his eyes open when Atticus’ feet slammed into the side of his face.
He skipped across the earth in a blaze, leaving craters and burning trenches in his wake until he crashed into a massive crater.
“L-lord Emberion!”
Dozens of viscounts rushed forward, only to freeze mid stride. Atticus’ aura bore down on the army like a mountain.
“Hrk! H-how is he s-so strong!?”
Step.
Step.
Step.
Atticus approached slowly, each footstep making the air warp with heat. Their eyes trembled. Their throats dried up. Not one could speak.
Atticus slowly drew his katana, the blade hissing as his will coiled around it.
“I’ll make you all pay.”
