Chapter 1384: In his heart, he does care about you.
Chapter 1384: In his heart, he does care about you.
“Who was it?”
Gu Kai asked in a deep voice, his tone certain that Qian Songnan knew something.
As he spoke, he pointed to the nearby sofa for Qian Songnan’s wife, signaling her to sit down first.
Qian Songnan answered hesitantly, “It could have been Wei Jingshan. Earlier at the hospital, she overheard me talking to Miss Bai over the phone. Later, she invited me for coffee, and during that time, I told her about hiring someone to threaten Fang Zhiwei.”
“Do you have any evidence?”
Gu Kai’s gaze flickered with a trace of coldness, and his handsome features instantly hardened. As expected, just as he’d guessed, it was Wei Jingshan.
However, without evidence, Wei Jingshan would never admit to anything.
“I did record our earlier conversation,” Qian Songnan replied, his voice trailing off. “But Wei Jingshan promised me she’d help me this time.”
Gu Kai was visibly startled. “Wei Jingshan is helping you? Qian Songnan, you’re too naive. What capability does she have to help you?”
Towards the end, his tone turned tinged with sarcasm.
“She said she has a way.”
“So, what does that mean?” Gu Kai curled the corner of his lips into a cold smile. “Have you decided to give up on your son and only take care of yourself?”
Gu Kai was sure that these remarks were things Qian Songnan would never dare let the police hear.
He slid a hand into his pocket, pulled out his phone, and unlocked it…
“Of course not, Doctor Gu. As long as you can cure my son, I will give you the evidence,” Qian Songnan said, revealing his fox-like cunning. Even now, he was still bargaining with Gu Kai.
Gu Kai knew that Qian Songnan wouldn’t hand over the evidence easily. Besides, even if Qian Songnan had evidence, it likely wouldn’t prove that this time the package was sent by Wei Jingshan.
After hanging up, Gu Kai walked to the sofa, sat down, handed the phone back to Qian Songnan’s wife, and leaned his upright figure against the backrest. His expression remained calm, though his brows furrowed slightly. “Madam Qian, the surgery for Little Jun might be postponed.”
“Doctor Gu, didn’t you say last night that the surgery could be performed in three days?”
Madam Qian leapt up from the sofa in panic upon hearing this.
She looked at Gu Kai with a face full of worry. “I’ll make sure my husband hands over the evidence before the surgery.”
“No, I’m not postponing because of the so-called evidence in Qian Songnan’s possession.”
Gu Kai’s expression did not change, though a sharp glint flashed in his gaze. “Even if he has evidence, it cannot prove that this time, Wei Jingshan sent the package that caused Professor Fang’s death.”
Madam Qian was not a fool; in fact, she was quick on her feet.
“Doctor Gu, I understand. If that little brat Wei Jingshan really killed Professor Fang and falsely accused you and Miss Bai, I’ll definitely make her confess the truth.”
After finishing her words, Madam Qian turned and walked away.
Gu Kai did not stop her, though his gaze contained a hint of coldness as he watched her leave the office.
Qian Songnan might selfishly cooperate with Wei Jingshan to save himself, but Madam Qian loved her son desperately. That much Gu Kai had already discerned.
As a mother, she would undoubtedly refuse to watch as her son died. She would surely find a way to get evidence from Wei Jingshan.
The phone rang—it was Mo Xiuchen calling. Gu Kai narrowed his eyes slightly before pressing the answer button with his slender fingers.

After work, Bai Yiyi went directly to Wen Ran’s house to pick up Tongtong.
Tongtong, Momo, Xin Xin, Ziyi, and Zhou Lin’s Tiantian were playing joyously together, while Wen Ran and Zhou Lin sat nearby in hanging chairs, chatting.
Seeing Bai Yiyi approach, Wen Ran smiled warmly and waved to her, then instructed Nanny Zhang, who had accompanied her upstairs, to pour water for Bai Yiyi.
Bai Yiyi greeted Zhou Lin and sat down, then softly asked, “Ranran, I heard you went to the Fang Family yesterday?”
Wen Ran’s eyes flickered slightly with surprise at how Bai Yiyi knew.
“Someone posted those photos and letters online. I saw them this afternoon. Afterward, I called your brother, and he told me about it.”
Bai Yiyi’s words made Wen Ran widen her eyes in shock. She quickly took out her phone. “How could they get uploaded online? Those photos were clearly Photoshopped; didn’t anyone notice?”
“Ranran, don’t bother checking. The post has already been deleted.”
Seeing Wen Ran reach for her phone, Bai Yiyi calmly spoke, pursed her lips, and softly added, “Fang Zhiwei must really hate me now. Even though the photos were fake, and I didn’t write those letters, her father’s death was indirectly tied to them.”
“That’s not true. Sister Wei said she knows someone deliberately planted those things, trying to stir up conflict between you two.” Wen Ran forced a faint smile, unwilling for Bai Yiyi to carry a burden of guilt.
“Yiyi, these were never your fault. You don’t need to feel guilty. Since the post was deleted, it means Gu Kai already handled it.”
Zhou Lin chimed in gently, trying to comfort her. She had returned to G City this afternoon and then brought Tiantian to visit Wen Ran. The two women had spent the afternoon playing with the children, not watching TV or browsing the internet, thus unaware of the online incident.
“Ranran, when is Professor Fang’s funeral?”
“Do you want to go?” Wen Ran asked, puzzled at Bai Yiyi’s question. While Professor Fang’s body had been donated to science, a funeral service would still be held.
“I would like to go,” Bai Yiyi hesitated briefly before sharing her thoughts.
Wen Ran frowned slightly, “Yiyi, maybe you should wait until the truth is uncovered. Then, you can visit Professor Fang’s grave and pay your respects.”
Although she had offered explanations, Wen Ran knew that Fang Zhiwei would not be happy to see Bai Yiyi. Recalling Fang Zhiwei’s attitude toward her brother the previous night, Wen Ran didn’t want Bai Yiyi attending the funeral.
Seeing Wen Ran’s expression, Bai Yiyi felt a twinge of sadness creep into her heart. “Ranran, Fang Zhiwei really does blame me, doesn’t she?”
Wen Ran sighed, “She just lost her only family member. It’s understandable for her emotions to be fraught. She isn’t targeting you alone—she’s treating my brother poorly too.”
“I understand.”
Bai Yiyi lowered her head and pressed her lips together softly.
“By the way, Yiyi, where did you take Aunt Bai?” Wen Ran hesitated for a moment before changing the subject.
When Bai Yiyi mentioned her mother, her expression subtly shifted. “I sent her back to the countryside where she used to live. After what happened, if she continues appearing in front of you all, even she would feel uncomfortable. Ranran, my mom asked me to thank you on her behalf.”
“No need to thank me—I wasn’t doing it for her. Besides, leaving things be was my brother’s decision, not mine.” Wen Ran’s expression turned gentle as she spoke with a warm smile. “If you really want to thank someone, go thank my brother. Even though he doesn’t say it aloud, he still cares about you.”
“Ranran, don’t joke about me and your brother anymore. After everything that’s happened, there’s absolutely no hope between us.”
Bai Yiyi’s smile held a bitter edge at the corners of her lips.
Perhaps this was Heaven’s punishment for her—to be destined for a lifetime of solitude, deprived of love.
Wen Ran opened her mouth slightly, intending to speak, but when the words reached her lips, she swallowed them back. She realized that the relationship between Bai Yiyi and her brother might truly have come to an end.
