Chapter 1385: 1384 if you dare fall asleep in the bathroom again next time
At night, Bai Yiyi was reading Tongtong a story. Before she could finish, Tongtong had already drifted off into a peaceful sleep, a faint smile lingering at the corners of her mouth.
Looking at her sweet and angelic sleeping face, Bai Yiyi’s gaze softened unconsciously. She tucked Tongtong in gently and leaned down to place a loving kiss on her forehead.
Standing up, she walked out of the children’s room and returned to her own bedroom to take a shower.
Just as she picked out her clothes, the phone on the small table by the bed began to ring. She frowned slightly in confusion and walked over to pick it up.
When she saw the caller ID, Bai Yiyi’s eyes flickered for a moment. She pressed the answer button, “Hello, Mom.”
“Yiyi, I’ve been meaning to call you this afternoon. Did you see the posts about you online? They’re saying you ruined Gu Kai and Fang Zhiwei’s relationship, and even accusing you of causing Fang Zhiwei’s father’s death…”
Bai Yuqin’s voice was filled with worry, and Bai Yiyi instinctively furrowed her brows. “Mom, that’s just slander and complete nonsense. Don’t believe any of it.”
“Yiyi, why don’t you just come back home with Tongtong? I feel like G City isn’t the right place for you anymore.”
Bai Yuqin’s suggestion carried a note of hesitation, but her intention was clear—she was worried about Bai Yiyi. She was afraid that staying alone in G City would only bring her harm.
What troubled her most was Bai Yiyi’s lingering feelings for Gu Kai. Feelings that couldn’t be resolved but couldn’t be let go—only painful.
“Mom, what’s this talk about suitability? I haven’t done anything wrong, and I won’t let others slander me. You don’t need to worry. The posts were deleted shortly after they went up, and those photos were Photoshopped…”
“Yiyi, I know you too well. Even if you didn’t do any of it, even if Fang Zhiwei’s father’s death wasn’t your fault, you’ll still feel guilty deep down.”
A mother knows her daughter best. Bai Yuqin understood her daughter perfectly.
Bai Yiyi forced a faint smile and pretended to sound carefree. “What’s there to feel guilty about? Fang Zhiwei isn’t someone who can’t tell right from wrong. Even Ranran has explained things to her. Mom, I have work tomorrow, so I’m hanging up now. Take care, okay?”
Without waiting for her mother to respond, Bai Yiyi hung up the call.
She grabbed her clothes and headed straight to the bathroom.
To unwind, Bai Yiyi made a deliberate effort to fill the bathtub with water and scattered some flower petals she’d bought earlier. She sank into the tub and let the warm water envelop her comfortably.
Perhaps she hadn’t been sleeping well these days, and the online slander earlier today had weighed on her mind as her mother had said, filling her with guilt.
Relaxed in the soothing water, she drifted off without realizing it.
Half-conscious, Bai Yiyi vaguely felt someone calling her name. She furrowed her brows but didn’t respond, her heavy eyelids refusing to lift.
Suddenly, she felt her body become weightless. She let out a soft murmur of discomfort and strained to open her eyes. When her gaze fell upon a handsome face looming above her, a surge of realization struck her hard.
Her drowsy eyes darted rapidly. Upon recognizing her surroundings as the bathroom, the remnants of sleep vanished entirely.
Her thoughts snapped back into place, and her entire being jolted awake. The next instant, a sharp scream reverberated through the bathroom.
“Stop squirming, or I won’t be responsible if you fall.”
Overlapping her startled scream was a man’s low and somber voice. Bai Yiyi’s wide eyes filled with shock as her petite face turned beet-red, almost as if it could drip blood under the lighting.
“Put me down!”
She shouted in panic.
Even though Gu Kai had wrapped a bath towel around her, being held by him like this made her want to dig a hole and hide forever.
Gu Kai’s strong arms only tightened, like steel clamps locking her firmly in his embrace.
He strode out of the bathroom, carried her to the bed, and, without a second glance at her reddened face that resembled a tomato, unceremoniously tossed her onto the bed.
“Ah!”
Bai Yiyi screamed again.
This time, it was from fright, worried she might have hurt herself.
The soft mattress protested at her sudden landing, bouncing her slightly before settling her back down.
“Bai Yiyi, if I ever catch you sleeping in the bathtub again, I’ll make you sleep on the floor for an entire night.” Gu Kai’s tall frame loomed over the bed like an impenetrable wall. His brows furrowed deeply, his eyes dark and intense as he glared at her.
His cold words left no doubt about his frustration. If he hadn’t come to her house tonight, would she have slept in the bathtub until morning?
If she slipped into the water during the night, by morning, he might have received a call about her drowning.
Still wrapped in the bath towel and thrown onto the bed, Bai Yiyi hadn’t yet recovered from her shock when the sharp threat landed like a knife. Under normal circumstances, she would’ve lashed back without hesitation.
But tonight, she stayed quiet, simply pressing her lips together and turning her flushed face away, not daring to meet his eyes.
To protect herself, she instinctively tugged the blanket nearby to cover her body. She hadn’t felt cold when she was asleep in the water, but now she noticed how chilly the room was.
Seeing her remain silent, Gu Kai’s anger found no outlet. It was like punching cotton—his frustration only bounced back. His expression darkened further, his lips tightening into a straight line. In the end, he suppressed his fury and refrained from scolding her anymore.
He stood there for a moment, watching Bai Yiyi curl herself completely into the blanket, hiding even her hair from view.
He frowned slightly, telling himself to let it go and not stoop to her level.
“Why are you here?”
After a long while, Bai Yiyi finally poked her head out from the blanket. Her eyes shifted as she softly broke the silence in the room.
Gu Kai’s gaze fell on her small, flushed face, her earlier redness fading to a soft, rosy glow. Against the lighting of the crystal lamp, her skin seemed to glow with a layer of delicate pink, inexplicably beguiling.
When he’d seen her lying naked in the bathtub earlier, unconscious, he hadn’t entertained a single improper thought. All he’d felt was a surge of anger.
Darkness flashed across Gu Kai’s eyes. He ignored Bai Yiyi’s question and turned away from the bed, heading into the walk-in closet.
Bai Yiyi’s eyes flickered with confusion. She wondered why Gu Kai left without saying a word and why he went into the closet, but before she could figure it out, he returned with a piece of her sleepwear in hand.
Catching sight of the sleepwear in his hand, Bai Yiyi’s face, which had just cooled down, immediately flushed again.
The searing heat rising in her cheeks felt like she was being burned alive, and her gaze turned evasive.
“Put this on.”
From a few steps away, Gu Kai tossed the sleepwear towards the bed, where it landed squarely on Bai Yiyi’s head.
Hearing her let out a startled little noise, the corners of his lips curled up slightly of their own accord. He turned and strode to the nearby sofa, sinking into it with graceful ease.
Lying on the bed, Bai Yiyi pulled the sleepwear off her head, assuming from the sound of his footsteps that Gu Kai had left the room.
But when she lowered the garment and looked up, she saw Gu Kai elegantly seated on the sofa nearby, reclining into it. The harsh coldness in his brow had softened, replaced by an air of nonchalance as he closed his eyes and rested.
She opened her mouth to tell him to leave. But on second thought, considering he’d already seen everything—making a fuss now would only earn his ridicule. So, clenching her teeth, she decided to endure it.
