Chapter 4896: Knows
Yue’er froze upon hearing the voice. In that brief moment of distraction, the dagger in her hand was snatched away, and simultaneously, she was swept into the arms of the intruder and pinned against his chest.
Xiao Junyan cradled the chubby infant in one arm while seizing the dagger from her grasp with the other. He immediately lunged toward the Wolf King charging once more. Unexpectedly, as he thrust the dagger forward, its sharpness and unusual nature became apparent.
Whoosh!
Awooooooo!
A fierce blade aura sliced through the air. The charging Wolf King likely hadn’t anticipated Xiao Junyan’s astonishing speed. Unable to dodge in time, its neck took the full force of the strike.
Blood spattered as a howl echoed through the air. The wolf king’s body plummeted downward, crashing onto the ground with a thud. Blood gushed from its neck, staining its fur crimson. Its body twitched convulsively as it struggled to rise, only to be met by another strike from Xiao Junyan, who had landed holding Yue’er.
“Whoosh!”
“Awooooooooo!”
The dagger pierced its flesh. The Wolf King’s howl now sounded hollow and weak. Its body stiffened, and in the next instant, it fell straight to the ground, its life extinguished.
With the Wolf King dead, the remaining eleven or twelve wind wolves let out a final howl before scattering in all directions, fleeing swiftly.
By then, Xiao Junheng and the two youths were already kneeling, swords braced against the ground, gasping for breath. Sweat poured down their bodies like rain, their dark hair plastered to their cheeks. Blood stained their robes crimson; some wounds ran deep enough to expose bone, while others had torn through their clothing entirely. They looked utterly battered and disheveled.
Yet now, all three eyes gleamed brightly as they gazed upon the suddenly appearing youth in black robes—Xiao Junyan! The young master of their Xiao family!
His arrival had averted their peril and indirectly saved their lives.
“Greetings, Young Master! Thank you for saving us!” The two youths, who had been propping themselves up with their swords in a half-kneeling position, dropped to their knees. Clasping their fists in salute, their words brimmed with reverence.
Xiao Junheng, after a moment’s pause, straightened and nodded to him. “Thank goodness you arrived.” His gaze then fell upon the little girl cradled in his arms, a flicker of surprise crossing his eyes.
Everyone in the Xiao family knew that no one could come within three steps of Xiao Junyan, let alone be held in his arms. So what was the story with this little girl? Had he truly brought her in?
Yue’er, held tightly in his embrace, lifted her head. Seeing that the Wolf King was dead and the danger had passed, yet Xiao Junyan still held onto her dagger without returning it, she immediately cried out, “Give me back my dagger!”
Xiao Junyan merely nodded to Xiao Junheng, paying no heed to the two kneeling youths. Instead, he turned his gaze to the plump little doll in his arms.
Hmm. Though this little thing was hardly a baby anymore, to him, she was nothing but a chubby little meat doll. Especially now, with those wide-eyed, pouting features—she looked utterly amusing.
Within the entire Xiao family, no one dared treat him this way.
“The dagger! It’s mine! Give it back!” Yue’er glared at him with her beautiful eyes, like a small beast, reaching out to snatch the dagger back.
But Xiao Junyan simply twisted his wrist, tucking the dagger away.
“Too sharp. Not something you should be playing with.”
If he had previously thought this chubby child belonged to the Xiao family, then seeing that dagger made him realize this plump little thing, who seemed to have appeared out of nowhere, was definitely not one of them.
