Chapter 1688: Meaning of the First Myth

Chapter 1688: Meaning of the First Myth

“When I say the words ’First Myth’, what things come up in your mind?”

Rather than respond directly to the young man’s question, Vaughn instead replied to Valyr with a question of his own.

“Well, they’re the first person to break through the shackles of mortality, no?” said the latter in response after giving it a bit of thought. “They’re also the first one to form a Legacy and the first one to transform their Force into a Concept.”

“In the literal sense, you’re not wrong.” The man faintly nodded at the young man’s words. “However, there’s more to the First Myth than meets the eye.”

Whoosh!

As those words left his mouth, Vaughn went ahead and manifested a strand of energy above his palm.

“It goes without saying that everything that currently exists within our universe must have originated from something,” said the man, transforming the strand of energy into a ball of flames.

“In other words, for something to exist, one must have created or pioneered it in the first place.”

“Whether it be an occupation like forging, a skill like [Fireball], or a type of energy like Azure Energy, someone or something in the far past first needed to come up with the idea and birth that idea into existence.”

“With that idea now existing, the possibility of improving upon it now appears, allowing what was previously a simple idea to reach unimaginable heights with the passage of time.”

“Using the example of forging, you could say that the first one to discover forging was only able to make crude weapons at first,” said Vaughn, transforming the orb of flames into a rough spear.

“Yet, in our current age, a ton more things are possible through the art of forging, whether it be spaceships, arcane constructs, or structures that fuse both magic and technology together.”

“Naturally, the same principle also applies to the path of achieving greater power,” the man continued, a slight smile adorning his face. “In fact, there used to be a long stretch of time when Legends used to be the pinnacle of strength.”

“However, thanks to that person’s ingenuity and creativity, the shackles of mortality were broken, allowing the existence of Myths.”

“Though the long passage of time has made us forget the ones that have pioneered such ideas in the first place, the universe has made sure that their mark on the path would never be forgotten.”

“After all, without their vision and their effort, such ideas would never have existed in the first place.”

“In a way, you could say that the mark these pioneers have left have become a guiding beacon of sorts, which allows those that trek the same path to innovate and advance the idea even further.”

Dispelling the rough spear he conjured, Vaughn looked at Valyr with a calm expression. “Returning our discussion to the topic of the First Myth, I want to preface that the First Myth I’m talking about is not the first ever being to become a Myth in the entire universe.”

“Instead, when I say the First Myth, I’m talking about the first being to become a Myth in the world of Veldanyr,” said the man, briefly glancing at Quentin.

“Though the mark such a being would leave on the path does not amount to much within the grand scheme of things, it does have a substantial effect on their place of origin, especially to those that are of the same race as them.”

At the moment Vaughn arrived at this point of his explanation, Valyr felt as if an answer was starting to form in his mind, the gears in his head turning as various thoughts began to appear.

“If the First Myth were to break the shackles of mortality with a Concept that focuses on the element of Fire, then the chances of other beings breaking through the shackles of mortality with the same Concept are higher.”

“The same rule applies no matter what kind of Concept the First Myth comprehends,” said Vaughn. “However, if one is to look at it from the long term, then it goes without saying that the kind of Concept the First Myth uses to break through the shackles is incredibly important.”

“Wait…” As those words left Vaughn’s mouth, Valyr paused for a bit, the gears in his mind turning faster and faster as he focused on the two legacies he and Ataraxia received from the orb.

Filling in the blanks he had in his answer with the information he got from Vaughn, as well as the information he got from the legacies themselves, the young man soon gave the man a look of understanding.

“Are you telling me that… the First Myth broke through the shackles of mortality with a Concept that covered… everything?”

“Though it might seem like it, the Concept he comprehended does not cover everything,” Vaughn clarified as Quentin shuddered in response to Valyr’s question. “To be more exact, the Concept he comprehended covers two broad elements prevalent in Veldanyr.”

“Magic… and weapons.”

As those words left the man’s mouth, Valyr briefly recalled the memories Vaughn had shared with him back at the Four Pillars’ Inheritance regarding humanity’s days at the Age of Uprising.

Recalling how everyone at the time used weapons at first to fight against the orcs, only to then incorporate magic into their repertoire later on, the young man soon understood why the First Myth would comprehend a Concept focused on those two things.

“Without getting too deep into details, the Manaweaver legacy focuses on the magic aspect prevalent throughout Veldanyr,” explained Vaughn. “On the other hand, the Metalbreaker legacy focuses on the weapon aspect.”

“Whether it be skills that aligned with that aspect, subclasses, or professions that allowed one to make greater progress in that aspect, the First Myth was able to condense all of that into their Concept, giving him the ability to fight against those above his class rank.”

“In exchange, the speed at which he improves his Concept is far slower compared to majority.” The man glanced at Quentin and gave him a slightly apologetic smile. “After all, for any concept to improve, there are only two paths one could take.”

“The first one is to specialize and reach an extreme.”

“The second is to expand and encompass everything.”

“Feeling ambitious after transforming his Force into a Concept, Quentin decided to take the second route, hoping to become immensely powerful by the time he ascended to the realm of divinity.”

“Though his current strength allows him to fight Half Deities and weaker Lesser Deities to a standstill while being at the peak of Rank 10, there still exists a fair distance between him and Deities in certain aspects.”

“…And I guess that pretty much sums it up.”
