Chapter 1304: Thank You
Chapter 1304: Thank You
“Ha…” Evelyn woke up in the middle of the night, her body drenched in sweat. She looked around and saw no one there.
But that was just her not wanting other people to get worried.
Then, she rose from the bed and closed her eyes. The elements had another clash. She had to use her ena to quell the conflict forcefully.
“Haa… Ha…” Evelyn let out a breath of relief after the conflict stopped. Still, her face was pale.
She stepped out of the bed and walked to the window, looking at the clear night sky.
“How long has it been?” Evelyn muttered. The horrifying memory resurfaced in her mind, reminding her how hopeless she was at the Bloody Banquet.
Bella had a hard time recovering her mental state because of the banquet. She could remember Bella saying, “I’m jealous of you, Evelyn. You are strong. Your power is one thing, but your mental fortitude is another.
“I wish I could just move on and set my sights on revenge without getting haunted by all these memories…”
Evelyn didn’t say anything at that time as if she couldn’t offer any advice, but that wasn’t what actually happened.
Bella called her strong, but she was not.
During the night, she would wake up like this because of the two unstable elements.
There wasn’t a time when she could rest peacefully after having two elements.
“Ha…” Evelyn let out a long sigh, her hands shaking. She was different from the ’Evelyn’ people saw.
Evelyn simply dropped to her knees while gripping both arms as if trying to stop their trembling.
“I’m not strong… I’m weak just like you. The horrifying memory is also haunting me, but I simply can’t focus on that haunting memory because I’m too distracted by just trying to stay alive…”
She was exhausted. From time to time, she couldn’t help but think it wasn’t a bad idea just to not wake up in the middle of the night and let her conflicting elements take her life.
But she had made a promise. That promise was the one that kept the people around her going, and it was irresponsible of her to escape by dying.
“I’m tired… I have tried to save as many people as possible, but…” Evelyn bit her lips. “Someone… please save me.”
“…” Evelyn opened her eyes. The scenery changed. The room was warm. While there was no sunlight, she could see that it was not night either.
“A dream…” Evelyn muttered. She covered her eyes with her hand while trying to gather her thoughts, only to hear a creaking sound from the door.
“Oh, you have woken up? I have never seen you waking up this late.” Nathan took a peek first. Once he saw Evelyn awake, he entered casually with a bag of food.
“Huh?” Evelyn tilted her head in confusion.
“What? You didn’t notice? It’s about time for lunch.” Nathan smiled wryly. “I tried to wake you up for breakfast, but you didn’t wake up.”
“Eh?” Evelyn was dumbfounded. She panicked for a moment, and the first thing she checked was the elements in her body because it was her routine.
She forgot that the two elements had been fixed, and there was no danger anymore. On the other hand, her instinct seemed to remember it.
“This…” Evelyn looked around, feeling embarrassed. At the same time, she had realized that this might be the first time she had slept so peacefully.
She didn’t have to remain aware in her sleep anymore, thinking that something would happen with her elements.
After regaining her composure, she could finally recall what had happened the previous night.
For the rest of the day, she taught Nathan the basics of the five techniques. While the difficulty increased, Nathan managed to learn all five techniques before dinner.
Nothing special happened, but Evelyn reflected a lot and kept checking the new form of her element.
She was too excited to find her problem had been solved and probably got so exhausted that she didn’t realize she dozed off.
This was the result.
“This…” Evelyn hurriedly placed her hand on the top of her hair and noticed how bad her bed hair was.
Nathan chuckled at seeing a new side of her. This was the first time she had acted flustered, not knowing what she needed to do.
“I’m going to bring you some water.” Nathan waved his hand and just exited the room, giving her the private time to fix herself.
“…” Evelyn just stared at the door for some time before rising from the bed. “I just showed something embarrassing…”
Evelyn didn’t know how to face Nathan after this. It felt like all the dignity she had kept all this time had crumbled.
But at the same time, she recalled the fact that she had slept soundly.
It had been over 8 years since she had gotten her second element. In other words, it had been over 8 years since she got to sleep like this.
The dream reminded her of the torture that had plagued her for so long. And the torture had finally stopped.
She desperately wished for someone to lend a helping hand.
A hope that someone would notice the conflict in her elements would appear and help her. But rather than help, people wouldn’t even notice the conflict of the two elements.
In addition, they simply praised and idolized her as someone who could wield two elements, not knowing the kind of sacrifice she had made just to stay alive.
It wasn’t just during her sleep. Even during the day, she was constantly looking out and suppressing the elements. She had to be on guard every second, knowing that once she let go of that guard, she might lose her life a minute later.
But it had stopped.
Even if he wasn’t the one to notice it, Nathan was still directly involved. His familiars recognized the problem, and Nathan even procured a medicine that would aid her.
She felt like she wanted to cry from all that torture, but this was something she should celebrate.
She could finally live like normal people again.
When she closed her eyes, it felt like her prayer had been answered.
Someone reached out to her trembling hands from that night, giving a smile that calmed her down.
A single tear unknowingly leaked out of the corner of her right eye, but a smile appeared on her face.
“Thank you…”
