Chapter 1724: I’ve Decided

Chapter 1724: I’ve Decided

Lady Ravyn could feel her blood turning cold.

She didn’t know what Rex did, but for him to deal with the assassination attempt with such effectiveness was quite chilling. It’s almost like this was something mundane for him, something that doesn’t worth fretting over.

Earlier, he displayed his overwhelming strength.

And now, he also displayed his cold and calculating side that roots out enemies effectively.

Rex didn’t need to talk with the assassin, nor did he need time to learn what was going on.

His keen observations allowed him to know exactly what the assassin’s plan was.

It made Lady Ravyn really wonder what Rex’s true identity was.

’What is he in the Mortal Realm…?’ She swallowed harshly. ’Is he a God down there?’

Only someone of a high standing could possess high qualities like Rex; for him to dispatch the murder attempt on himself with such calmness made it clear that death was nothing new for him. In fact, death perhaps is his ever-companion.

Rex sat back down again on the sofa and leaned back to relax.

He doesn’t even acknowledge the assassin’s existence—across the table, as if the assassin was nothing more than a decoration. All the assassin could do was look at Rex in horror, and then at Lady Ravyn, trying to find out what happened to the other assassins.

“I… I’ll report this to the guards,” Lady Ravyn said as she walked towards the door.

“Remember,” Rex’s voice rang. “I still hadn’t given you permission to leave.”

Lady Ravyn didn’t answer; she only walked out to inform the guards about the assassins

She has zero intention of leaving the residence before Rex allows her to, especially now that she really understands what kind of monster she was dealing with. Just the thought of defying his order disappeared from her mind for good.

It’s better for her to listen and use this merciful chance to appease Rex.

After all, if Rex was so much to want her to die so much, then there’s nothing she could do to stop it.

A few minutes later, Lady Ravyn headed back to the room.

She walked through the corridor with her head tilted down, recalling what she learned earlier.

Curious as to what really happened to the assassins, she followed the guards to investigate—and when she arrived at the scene, she was greeted with a bloody mess. All of them were sprawled on the ground with grievous wounds.

One at the center was the odd one, as it seemed all damages were done by him.

’That one went mad and attacked the other assassins,’ Lady Ravyn thought in disbelief, as she recalled how all Rex did was look at where the assassins were. ’What kind of Echo is in his possession? Was it even an Echo?’

For someone to make others go mad like that, it should be through an ability.

It must either be from an Echo Genesis or a Spirit Genesis.

Lady Ravyn leaned toward a Spirit Genesis the most since Rex had only reached the Eternal Spirit rank.

For him to already be able to use an Echo Genesis is unlikely.

But then again, she felt like nothing was impossible as long as Rex was involved.

On the other hand, Rex looked at the notification in front of him.

<Weaver of Madness>

Rank: Legendary (Tenth-rank)

Description: Allow the user to overwhelm others with their mind by locking eyes—instigating a mental assault on anyone who meets their gaze. Targets feel the user’s anger surge through them, becoming more hostile as their own minds are forced to replay a deep, anger-rooted trauma. This effect only works—against opponents whose mental stat and willpower are weaker than the user’s.

His breakthrough also gave him this Weaver of Madness skill.

It worked similarly to the Alpha Bearing skill, but targeted and made the target go insane instead.

Rex wanted to try out this skill, but he hadn’t gotten the chance to do so: fortunately, tonight was a free rein for him to try out this ability. And from the looks of it, this ability is extremely potent, as the rage also empowered the target.

One Master Immortal Spirit 4 assassin was able to take down multiple ones.

Not outright killing them, but wounding them enough for them to be captured by the guards.

I want to use the Ravenous Maw of Magna, but I don’t think it’s appropriate to use it on them now.

Unlike the Weaver of Madness skill, he could tell that this Ravenous of Magna was far stronger than anything he had ever had. He tried using it earlier, but the enormous surge that came from within made him stop the casting mid-track.

He didn’t want to draw too much attention as his target was Lucen.

And alerting Lucen about the failure of the assassination would be going against his plan.

“Lord Rex…” Lady Ravyn entered the room again. “All of the assassins are handled. None of them was able to escape.”

Hearing this, the assassin across the table sucked in a cold breath.

For Rex to dispatch them without even lifting a finger was something that he thought impossible.

Earlier, he thought Rex was bluffing.

But seeing the fear and uneasiness radiating from Lady Ravyn, it seemed he was not bluffing.

All of the assassins were killed!

Lady Ravyn’s demeanor changed instantly the moment she stepped into the room; she didn’t bear the same nobleness as she had earlier. Hesitantly and almost meekly, she walked around the sofa and stood behind Rex.

“Lord Rex,” She muttered; her voice shaky. “I think you deserved some rest after tonight.”

And surprisingly, she began massaging Rex’s shoulders passionately.

Rex leaned his head back on the sofa, enjoying the massage, as, surprisingly enough, it seemed this was what his body needed the most. Her strength was enough to make him feel something. Not as good as Iris’ massage. In fact, far from it, but it’s still pleasant nevertheless.

In the next five minutes, the assassin was forced to watch Rex relax as it whimpered pathetically.

Not so much because of his shattered legs.

As an assassin, he was trained to endure pain, so he could endure this much without moaning.

But the humiliation, on the other hand, was incredibly painful.

A few minutes of being massaged, Rex reached out his hand to hold Lady Ravyn’s hand, signaling for her to stop. He then tapped the sofa beside him while he stared ahead at the assassin, who seemed to be in a world of helplessness and depression.

Even as Lady Ravyn sat down, the assassin still kept his head down.

He had already stopped the bleeding from his shattered legs, but he still couldn’t heal them.

Just then, he noticed the room was suspiciously silent.

As he raised his gaze hesitantly to check, he met Rex’s silent gaze.

Rex had been staring at him quietly with a gaze that seemed to stare directly into his soul.

It was his first time feeling this much hostility from someone.

“Adam Bretwit…” Rex muttered the name.

Hearing this, the assassin’s eyes widened as he never would’ve expected Rex to know his actual name, one that he had already abandoned years ago when he hadn’t been an assassin. Now, he goes by Seven, but Rex somehow knew his real name.

Of course, Rex knew his name with a simple scan using the System.

But Adam didn’t know that.

“I’m quite pleased that you hadn’t made an attempt to contact Lucen,” Rex continued—and seeing the fake confusion behind Adam’s eyes, he clarified. “I know he’s your employer, so don’t even bother. It’s not wise to keep lying to me. First of all, do you know who I am?”

“Yes…” Adam answered reluctantly.

He could feel the uselessness of hiding things from Rex, so he had no choice but to speak the truth.

Not only did Rex know about the item he hid in his mouth, but Rex also knew—about the charm that he’d use to contact Lucen when the contract was finished. Adam didn’t know how Rex knew, but it seemed nothing could be hidden.

Instead of lying, best for him to tell the truth, and cursed Lucen for aiming for this monster.

“What is it you know about me?”

“You’re Princess Davina’s fiancée, recently promoted to a knight, and the one who helped the empress complete her mission.”

“Hmm… But you forgot that I’m also a fair man.”

Rex leaned forward, clasping his hands as his elbows rested on his thighs.

His posture exuded both focus and quiet dominance.

“As a trained assassin, you bear no killing intent even to those you’re tasked to kill. I’m rather sensitive to killing intent, so since you don’t bear any, I’m willing to let you go. Besides, the one who wanted me dead is Lucen, not you.” Rex explained—and then tilted his head a little. “Make it easy for yourself. Speak against Lucen, and I’m willing to guarantee your life and let you go.”

Rex reckoned an assassin had a code of honour.

It’s not going to be easy persuading Adam to give up Lucen.

However, considering Rex’s display and background, the offer was unnaturally tantalizing.

Simply because Rex has the power to grant those conditions.

“And what if I don’t want to?” Adam asked coldly.

“Please…” Rex leaned back and chuckled. “I can find out your real name as easily as that. Do you really want to test me and find out what would happen? Even if you’re not worried about me, do you think your organization has the power to go against the House of Castillon?”

Even without answering, everyone knew the answer—of course not!

Rex was backed by the duke himself; not a lot of forces could go against such a terrifying backing.

Just then, the smile on Rex’s face vanished.

It was replaced with a stern face that showed how serious he was about this.

“You will convince Count Dara that Lucen is really your employer,” Rex said with a low tone—a serious command, one that demanded submission from Adam. “Lower your pride in front of me. Do that, and you’ll live for another day.”

Adam looked down, contemplating.

He was given a choice between his code or his own life.

Naturally, his answer should be clear, but it’s hard to abandon a code he kept for all his life.

And Rex understands that.

But regardless, Adam has to abandon it if not the consequences would be much more severe.

Eventually, he let out a deep exhale.

Rex knew the answer from that alone as he turned to look at Lady Ravyn.

She was silent all this while; the thoughts in her mind are unknown.

“What about you?”

“Me…?”

“I mean, we’re talking about taking out your own brother here. Are you fine with this?”

Upon hearing this, Lady Ravyn paused for a good moment, recalling all the memories she had with her brother Lucen. It’s not as many since their training regimens differed, but there are times when she was fond of them.

Even so, she knew that this was how the world works.

“I’m fine, Lord Rex,” She answered with a restrained voice, holding back emotions. “You gave him a chance to forget about tonight—but instead, he sent assassins to your residence. I wanted to ask you to give mercy one more time, but if you’ve decided to kill him, then I’ll not stop you.”

“Such a good sister,” Rex smiled; it was a genuine compliment. “But yes, I’ve decided.”

“And right now is about a good time to make our move,” He continued, hearing the flipping of papers coming from the main residence finally halted. He stood up and grabbed Adam by his nape again, “Let’s end the night.”

Moments later.

Inside another peculiar, massive residence, not too far away from Rex’s residence.

Lucen looked at the glowing paper charm in his hand and smiled.

“It’s done…” He smirked in satisfaction. “It’s your fault for daring to humiliate me like that.”

Brak!

Just then, the door to his residence was flung open.

Lady Ravyn stepped inside in a rush, “Brother, come quick! We’ve been summoned!”

“Summoned…? Why is that?”

“Lord Rex is dead!”

“Oh…? That’s unfortunate.”
