Chapter 1794: The Reckoning
Hello readers, author here~
I don’t know if you guys noticed, but I’m trying a different writing style.
Let me know if you notice there’s something different, it’ll really help.
Happy reading~
…
Becoming a Blank is the start of something big. Something beyond comprehension.
Rex knew that it was coming. He could feel it in his bones, in his heart, and more importantly, in his power.
Notifications flickered in his vision, but he didn’t read them. Couldn’t—to be exact.
His eyes couldn’t peel away from the enemy before him.
Ignatius’ introduction was magnificent.
Perhaps, he wanted it to be.
His domineering aura swam to the sides—twisting and contorting through the voidal vortex of Linthia. It was a thick stroke—from the brush of a painter, and the world, the realm, everything it touches is the canvas that will display the picture in Ignatius’ mind.
As it crawled like blood leaving the husk of its dying owner, the introduction echoed in Rex’s mind.
’My name is Ignatius Rei Invictus, the Unmaker of Realms,’
His name and title, no doubt.
’The Throne of Absolute Mass’
Throne… Is it tied to his power within Invincibility?
’The World-Turner of Malakai,’
Another title. Malakai… Is it his home world? Or is it his realm like Kei Xun has? Or is it his own title prior to becoming a Blank? I don’t know.
’Ruler of the Unbound Titans,’
His cadre, I bet. Rex blinked and focused on Ignatius again. He is a Titan.
’The one hundred and first Scion.’
His rank. And with this much… power, he’s still below one hundred? How low is Kei Xun?
From him, Rex could feel the same heat.
Scorching heat of anger that was tempered into power beyond imagining.
Behind his eyes, behind the anger that was flashing brilliantly, there was something more profound.
It felt like killing intent, but it’s not. Passion? Love?
Rex wasn’t quite sure, but it burned like bloodlust—but far gentler than it. And the very absence of the System’s response fortified that claim. The aura then enveloped the entire world, drowning the realm in redness that felt foreign.
He was taking Rex to another dimension, or another realm. At least, it felt like it.
And in that realm, Ignatius’ body grew to an unfathomable size.
Alongside his swelling, his aura also ignited like lava erupting from the bowels of the earth.
It was suffocating.
Rex felt like he was going to be crushed right now, killed in an instant, but he didn’t. A glistening luster of power coated the surface of his skin. It was Ignatius’ power wrapping around him to protect him from being crushed.
His intention became clear. He wanted to show Rex the height of his power.
I hope he only showed this to me. Amanir and Linthia… Their minds would break without a doubt.
Once the surroundings settled in titanic rocks, mountains, and jagged spear stones, creating a landscape of nature’s ruination, the power inside Rex was pulled. Forced to ignite against his will. It was actually responding to Ignatius’ power.
In a way, this felt like courtship.
Like the courtship between two Beta wolves.
The unbelievable, suicidal pain. Self-loathing, suffering, and hatred. Brutal and bloody hardships. All of them that befell on Rex throughout his ascent to power, to invincibility, is the same as the increasing affection, attention, and mutual trust between the two stranger wolves.
Now, the two wolves are close, fond, and bonded.
And at this moment, when Ignatius showed the height of his power, drawing out the power from Rex, too, it was the same as when the two wolves howled in unison for their established bond and trust. Like Rex, Ignatius swam through a sea of pain and suffering to reach his position.
Families lost. Lovers lost. Pieces of himself lost. Good is lost.
Rex realized his power didn’t ignite against his will.
It was by his will.
Seconds ago, he thought the power from Ignatius forced him to respond.
But the feeling is not one-sided. It’s mutual. Only Rex didn’t know about that earlier.
He understands it now.
Both of them are from the same Stratum, the same pain, and that bonded them in a subconscious-level.
However, there’s only one Highseat of Invincibility.
One Alpha.
And thus, they have to settle who falls to wag their tail and who rises to howl.
“Kill your First God, Scion… Rex Silverstar,” Ignatius addressed Rex appropriately, formally. He also emphasized saying the name, allowing his words to brand into Rex’s skull. “His head is your ticket to challenge me. Kaiser’s measly head is your ticket. But be warned… If you become shiftless, the rule of invincibility will be lifted, and I…”
Everything around exploded.
Crimson, black, and golden orange drowned Rex’s vision along with the entire realm.
His might even make the sky twist like reality is bending to his will.
It’s hard to even imagine that someone with this kind of power exists, yet that someone is before him.
“Will challenge your invincibility before you challenge mine.” He added with a final grimace.
Rex’s body became hot at the challenge.
His blood was rushing through his bloodstream faster from his pounding heart.
Hah… This is bad. I’m scared.
It wasn’t Ignatius that scared him, but the question that popped into his mind.
From the moment he accepted his werewolf side—which leads him to also fully accept the Invincible Apparition, he embraced every hidden part of himself fully. No more hiding. No more shame. But that total acceptance forced him to confront the one thing he had still been denying.
Even in the privacy of his own mind.
But perhaps it’s time to know the answer.
System… Can you hear me?
<Yes.>
I have a question.
<Any question that requires deep information will be analyzed and priced in Gold.>
I don’t think you’ll give me a price tag for this question.
Rex felt his throat drying up even though he hadn’t said a single word through his lips. Only his mind.
He clenched his hands into fists and asked the question.
Am I… Am I smiling right now?
<…>
<Analyzing the user’s facial musculature…>
<Completed: Facial expression consistent with a genuine smile.>
Rex’s fingers tightened, turning them white as he hoped the reason for his smile wasn’t the one he was thinking right now. Deep down, he already knew the answer. But with nobody to affirm him, he couldn’t help but turn to the System.
His loyal companion.
Can you tell me what’s behind this smile?
<Initiating full physiological analysis…>
<Heart rate… Elevated.>
<Respiration… Rapid, shallow.>
<Sweat glands… Elevated perspiration.>
<Facial temperature… Flushing.>
<Cross-referencing analysis results with the user’s thoughts…>
The System can read his mind.
It has always been capable of doing that. And because of it, the System prickled Rex’s hope with cold, hard truths. One by one. Piece by piece. Making sure that there was no denying what his body and mind were experiencing right now.
<Completed: Physiological profile is inconsistent with distress…>
Rex’s heart pounded against his ribcage like it wanted to leap out.
He wanted to blame the smile on exhaustion, but now he could not.
<Inconsistent with aggression…>
Blaming the smile on the Blood Moon is plausible, but it was also not the answer.
<Inconsistent with fear…>
Ignatius, a being of unfathomable power, is right before him. Surely, the smile was caused by a reflex of the weaker side. But once again, the hard truth snuffed that excuse from Rex’s mind, forcing him to face reality.
And the only answer became apparent, as he didn’t even need the System to finish its analysis.
<Analysis completed: the user’s smile stems from high-arousal excitement.>
Just like that, the part that has been buried deep inside him surfaced.
Fighting, meeting powerful enemies, dancing on the hands of death, and growing stronger. All of them are the ingredients to shape this part of him. Defeating the enemies? Yes. Protecting those he loved and cherished? Yes, he wanted it also.
But on equal level as those things is the desire for blood and power.
I must be insane.
Rex didn’t need to look at the mirror now to know that he was smiling widely. Perhaps as maniacal and twisted as Ignatius was to him. And the rush inside of him, the beating of the heart, and the heat of anger are his own body telling him that he wanted this.
He wanted to be tested.
He wanted someone to try to take his life.
He was made for this.
I keep going to protect the others. To make sure they won’t end up like my parents. Mrs Greene. Robert. My biological mother—Nabila. My biological father… What was his name again? I… don’t remember. Even so, they’re what I aspire to become stronger for.
So, why…? Hearing him regard Kaiser lightly, why does it excite me?
And so does his power display. Why does it excite me?
Maybe it was the werewolf inside him. Or maybe it was his real self finally showing.
But which of the ones is true doesn’t matter.
What matters is that none of his enemies succeeded in killing him. And so do the enemies of Ignatius.
And that begged Rex to wonder. Between him and Ignatius, who would keep a clean record?
It’s going to be me.
Rex didn’t say it aloud, but his smile tells Ignatius the same.
Perhaps that’s why he, out of all Scions, was the one who came to welcome Rex to the Anger Stratum.
A Stratum of the bloodthirsty.
Everyone Scion in the Anger Stratum must be crazy.
His new organ—the button that controls the on and off of his Blank state, it pulsated inside him. Like ice melting under the harsh sunlight, or stones breaking under the might of Ignatius, the thought of what he was going to do became easier.
Maybe that’s the real reason Ignatius came down to welcome him.
To help him break the shackles.
Haxel tried to kill him when he begged. Empress Morgana betrayed him for an Archangel who was now buried in the soil. And Kaiser cheated fate with his Godly hands. If he couldn’t face them, if he couldn’t exact consequences befitting of their actions, how would he be able to fare against Ignatius?
It’s impossible.
He was still hesitant earlier on what he was going to do. His fondness blotted what needed to be done.
Now, that fondness is washed away with the threat of power from Ignatius.
Kill or be killed. Grow stronger or die.
And thus, his mind is cleared.
I’ve played their game. I climbed the ladder fairly in the name of peace. I proved myself to Davina, I appease to Lorcan, and I helped Morgana. Now that my path is shattered, and my kindness treated for shit… Everyone will kneel to me.
And with their tongues, they will give me a reason why I shouldn’t kill them.
Death to all who can’t convince me.
Ignatius left soon after.
Amanir and Linthia have stayed in their spots, heads hung low to avoid making eye contact, and couldn’t hear what was talked about between them. In some parts, the presence of Rex and Ignatius disappeared. From their peripheries, Rex was still there, still standing, but he seemed absent.
And when he came back, he talked again with the mighty being.
This time, Amanir and Linthia could hear what was being said.
A plan—and with it, the mighty being gave a parting gift by restoring Rex’s stamina to the full.
His body also seemed to contract, grown stronger from the touch.
Amanir might not be able to sense it well, but Linthia… She could feel the swelling of Rex’s power.
Even after what she went through in the Well of the Untold, even after the pain and darkness, she still felt small and puny behind Rex’s shadow. That’s what it takes to be the rising power everyone feared. No stagnation, only a meteoric rise that is not slowed by anything.
And now, he was running through the Black Rift, leading them somewhere.
“Where are we going?” Amanir asked, oblivious to the changem which was a good relief to the tension as Rex hadn’t spoken since then. “Heck, I don’t even know what our plan is!”
“We have an empire to burn,” Rex finally answered. His voice was deeper, more resolute than ever. “A great number is needed to burn an empire, and we’re now going to recruit some. Oh, I see them already.”
