Chapter 958 - 958: The Sparring Circle
Training Area
Demon Army Headquarters
Militopolis
Southeast Gledea
June 12th
531st Divine Year
The training ground roared with anticipation, the gathered crowd of demons cheering loudly as five Demon Lieutenant Colonels squared off against Evan.
They formed a loose circle around him, their standard-issue swords radiating the faint haze of Sword Law energy, carefully maintained to avoid overloading the structure.
Evan, standing in the centre, gripped his own standard sword, sweat dripping down his brow as he tried to maintain the flow of law energy to prevent overloading the weapon in his hands.
If he overloaded it and it broke, then he would lose the fight before it even began.
As he got into a stance, a hush fell over the spectators and the sparring match began without signal.
The first demon lunged from Evan’s left, their blade slicing through the air with a high-pitched whine. Evan twisted his body to meet the strike, his sword deflecting theirs in a short clash that sent sparks of energy flaring.
Normally, this was the part where Evan would try to overpower his opponent but given he wasn’t fighting just one person but five, there was no time for all that.
He quickly turned the momentum, forcing the demon’s weapon to veer off course before stepping back.
The second demon was already upon him, dashing in with a low, sweeping cut aimed at tripping him. Evan jumped back, his boots skidding against the dirt as he narrowly avoided the slash.
With no time to rest, the remaining three charged from different angles. One came from above with a high, vertical slash, while the other two aimed for his flanks.
Evan ducked low to avoid the overhead attack, twisting his body to intercept and block the left flanking strike. The moment their blades met, he released a surge of Sword Law energy to destabilize the attacker’s weapon, but though the energy on their blade shimmered violently, the sword didn’t break.
This forced Evan to sidestep the third strike aimed at his ribs, before jumping into the air to avoid the sweeping strike going for his legs.
As soon as his feet touched the ground, he kicked off the earth and dashed forward, leaving behind a sharp sonic boom that sent the jackets and hairs of the demons watching the match flying.
The training field exploded into cheers as the fight escalated, with the six combatants moving at supersonic speed.
Their silhouettes blurred as they clashed again and again, however, every single person present could easily follow their movements with their naked eyes.
They were all Level 700+, after all.
Every strike sent shockwaves rippling through the air, the sheer force of their movements kicking up dust clouds and forcing spectators to shield their eyes with magic barriers.
Just as Evan blocked a strike aiming for the side of his head, he used his brute strength to push the attacker away, before moving his sword to parry the flurry of thrusts that came from his front.
Pressing forward, Evan slid his blade along theirs to the hilt, where he released a controlled burst of sword law energy, but though his opponent’s blade’s energy coating flickered, it didn’t break.
The Lieutenant Colonel grinned, pivoting on their heel to deliver a horizontal slash aimed at Evan’s midsection.
Evan ducked, countering with an upward strike that forced them to disengage, but he couldn’t follow up as his blade trembled faintly, its structure under strain from the repeated clashes.
Adjusting his grip and modulating his sword law energy, Evan turned to meet the attack of the demon aiming their blade directly at his heart.
Their blades clashed with such force that both combatants were sent flying backwards. Evan landed on his feet, skidding across the ground, while his opponent stumbled before regaining their stance.
The remaining demons charged together, forcing Evan to retreat across the training ground.
The crowd cheered louder as the fighters weaved between them, swords striking with blinding speed.
Evan’s pupils darted around repeatedly, tracking the movements of his opponent’s weapons and deflecting and countering each attack.
Instinctively, he almost activated Time Difference, but he held himself back from doing so.
Skills of any kind were prohibited in this sparring match. No magic, no body strengthening.
Just Swords and Sword Law Energy.
Shifting tactics, Evan lunged at one of his opponents and thrust his sword forward, concentrating the law energy in his blade at the tip the instant it impacted with his opponent’s blade.
He aimed for the weaker sections of their Sword law energy coating, each thrust disrupting its integrity. It took five more exchanges before he finally succeeded in shattering the energy coating around their sword, and consequently, the sword itself.
The swords they were using required a constant and consistent infusion of law energy. Too much would overload and break it, and too little would make it weak enough to be destroyed in a single strike.
They had to infuse the right amount of energy and maintain that frequency even while fighting and moving around.
That was the kind of training Evan had been participating in every day for the past 19 days.
With one of his opponents down, the remaining four demons pressed Evan harder. The difficulty of the fight seemed to increase despite the reduction in numbers.
They attacked in perfect synchronization, their strikes leaving him little room to manoeuvre. Evan minimised his movements as much as possible, dodging and parrying while carefully managing the energy around his own sword.
One attacker landed a glancing blow on Evan’s weapon, sending a shudder through the blade. Evan grimaced, adjusting his stance to absorb the impact and immediately countering with a quick downward slash that struck their blade at an angle, causing the sword energy to ripple.
Taking advantage of that split-second opening, Evan pulled back his blade and struck again, shattering their weapon, and leaving only three opponents.
With the sound of the crowd’s cheers as background music, Evan quickly targeted another one of the demons, focusing on attacking just that one while dodging the strikes of the other two.
His careful targeting finally paid off as their sword crumbled under the strain.
Immediately, Evan shifted into a defensive stance as the last two demons redoubled their efforts, their attacks coming in faster, unpredictable arcs.
Evan dodged one narrowly, spinning on his heel to parry the other. But just as he did that, cracks of light appeared along the surface of his sword.
Noticing this, his opponents abandoned all notions of defence and charged at him, delivering a rapid rush of strikes aiming for the cracked parts of his sword,
Evan had to carefully modulate the law energy to protect the damaged areas as he deflected their attacks, each one sending reverberations up his arms.
His eyes narrowed as he bid his time, focusing on defence to draw the duo into close quarters. The moment the both of them struck at the same instant, Evan abandoned defence as well and moved on to the attack.
He turned the momentum of their swords against them, sliding his blade between theirs and cutting through the sword law energy around both weapons in a single sweeping arc.
Their blades shattered, leaving Evan the last one with an intact weapon, its faint glow fluctuating as he struggled to maintain the energy on the nearly broken blade.
Around him, the crowd erupted into thunderous applause, the demons cheering his hard-fought victory.
“Dude, you won. You can let it break now.”
One of the two last demons said with a laugh, slinging an arm over Evan’s shoulder. The other glanced at the shattered hilt in his hands and shook his head.
“And to think you barely qualified to be a novice just two weeks ago…”
Evan shrugged, stabbing his sword into the ground and keeping the energy flow steady even after letting go of the blade.
“What can I say, I’m a fast learner.”
His response drew the attention of one of the other demons he fought, a demoness who gave him a sharp side-eye.
“Fast Learning doesn’t explain your unreal speed. Do you realize you just beat five people with years of experience in handling weapon laws after a little over two weeks of training???”
“Two things. First off, I have more experience than my age would suggest.
Second, I only won because of the rules. The victory condition was breaking your weapons, and we weren’t allowed to use skills or magic—a handicap for my sake.
Even with that, I struggled.
If this had been a real fight, there wouldn’t be a fight. I’d run.”
Evan wasn’t joking with his response. The five demons he just fought were all Level 780+. If he encountered them in an actual battle, he was hightailing the hell outta there immediately.
The seriousness of his response didn’t dampen the amusement of the demons around him. His candid remark earned hearty laughter from those nearby, and soon, more voices joined in, some calling out challenges and eager to fight him next.
To understand how Evan had grown so close to this group, one would need to know what happened after he and Arthur returned from Plomux on the 22nd.
Unsurprisingly, the Gozonians emerged victorious in the war for Plomux, with two of their Four-Star Generals present to solidify their hold over the Continent.
Alvey and McEnda returned to Gledea to prepare for the upcoming Annual Gozonian Interstellar Summit, while Evan, Arthur, Artemisia, and Beatrix made a brief stop at the Labyrinth of the Forsaken Divines.
The visit proved entertaining in its own way, as all the Forsaken Divines—who had previously attacked Evan, Artemisia, and Beatrix relentlessly—fled in terror at the mere sight of Arthur.
Despite having lost their sentience, they still experienced an instinctive dread of the godslayer.
The end result of Arthur’s visit to that place was the complete eradication of every Forsaken Divine within the Desolate Mountains.
Not a single one of them wasn’t turned to dust by the boy’s power of Null.
Artemisia and Beatrix split off from the group when they reached the Githal Region, leaving Arthur and Evan to return to Militopolis.
That was when they stumbled upon a training field where a company of demons trained with sword law energy.
Evan expressed his desire to join them, and since Arthur was with him at the time, they didn’t exactly have the option to refuse him.
Thus, this company of demons became his sword law manipulation trainers, and it wasn’t long before they grew comfortable with him.
Now, they were practically lining up to fight him, mainly because they were all sword fanatics and they found Evan’s sword style to be rather…unique.
Evan’s sword style was a creation born from fusing different sword styles from various people.
His predecessor, Arlan Maddox.
First and Second of the GWE’s Ten Great Swordsmen, Finley Thompson and Luke Bowthe.
First Star of the GEE’s Seven Star Generals, Bourne Randall.
His contracted Demon of Pride, Roselia.
And even the sword styles of some Bladewriaths he met years ago.
The fact that Evan could merge such diverse styles into something cohesive and effective was a testament to his innate talent with the sword.
This fusion intrigued the demons, many of whom were eager to experience it first-hand, which explained the line of challengers.
Since Evan wanted to train his sword law manipulation with them, their mutual interest created a perfect win-win scenario.
